  1. Re: Omcv 1?

    May I rephrase that?

    Thank you.

How do you justify buying the OMCV down to one when the typical man on the street has an OMCV of 3? Plain English that passes the GM Cheese barrier and explains why this character is seriously deficient in this area as compared to the average man on the street who has, and likely will, never be exposed to mental combat in any form?

First off, you assume that I even care arbout the man in the street. You see an issue. I don't. You can add all your little silly house rules to prevent someoene from taking a six point exploit. Frankly, to me, it's just not worth the trouble. But if I'm playing in your campaign, I'll follow your house rules, even if I would never bother with them in my own campaigns.

Or maybe, I'll just consider the man in the street to have an OMCV of 1 and six more points of Skills. But probably not because I rarely consider the man in the street to be much more than window dressing.

  2. Re: 6E Rules changes confirmed so far

By the book' date=' they would be 0 point Complications, as they were acquired in play (or has that aspect changed in 6e?).[/quote']

Possibly, or in some campaigns, GMs allow Complications to mutate -- that is, this one isn't interesting anymore, let's replace it with something different.

  3. Re: Question about Combat skill levels and damage

How much was the option to use combat skill levels to increase damage used in your games? A general estimate like "Allot"' date=' "occasionally" or "almost never" is fine, I don't need precise numbers.[/quote']

Well, the vast majority of games that I've GMed or played in using 5e were superhero games, then the answer for those games is going to be never because that was not an option for superhero games.

As for heroic games, those were all convention games that I GMed and occasionally, someone would use levels in that way. But a lot of players in those games were not regular Hero players and I never really played up the damage option as much as I should have.

  4. Re: 6Ed Character Sheet?

A friend of mine (Jagged - posts here occasionally) has a character sheet format that folds, like a greetings card, with the front dedicated to a character picture. It is good because they can be stood up to display the character when not actually in use and it is a really neat visual rep which adds to the flavour of the game.

I like your folding sheet, StG. Also repped.

As I use HD now I almost always use a HD character sheet, but I agree with Doc D that a properly designed character sheet can really add tot eh role playing experience: it is the interface between the character and the world out here.

Utility is the important in a character sheet to me. I need to find what I want when I want it. As for character pictures, it would make sense to me for that to be a separate item that you also have displayed in front of you. That would also save folding and unfolding the sheet.

  5. Re: Power Discussion: Barrier

+5 pts dissmissable seems to not have made it into HD6 or 6th ed

    could it be in APG?

Probably not, as I think the APG was pretty much done when the question was raised. I'm pretty sure it was created to answer the question, not that it had been created and left out. It will possibly appear in a 6e FAQ at some point.

As for HD, just use a Custom Adder and rename it Dismissible.

  6. Re: Omcv 1?

Adding to tesuji's comments, where else in the system do we say "it's only 6 points, so don't worry about it"? Can I just have an extra 5 INT for no cost? How about giving my Brick +5 STR or +3 PD and +3 ED for free? Each of these is only 5 or 6 points, so don't worry about it, right?

Discussing the costs of various system elements is also a waste of time - just don't worry about it, right?

Or maybe, just maybe, using points as a measuring stick means we should at least treat the points as having some relevance - that is, worrying about them.

Geesh, all I was trying to say was that I don't think the difference between a character built on 100 points and a character built on 106 points is all that great, so even if a character sells back 2 OMCV, it shouldn't have much of an impact when comparing that character to others in the campaign.

  7. Re: 6e discussion: Complications

Hmm...probably a good example of a character who becomes enraged in combat is Wolverine, and that's all flavour: he doesn't slaughter innocents, cause massive property damage or anything like that.

What Hero Enraged requires is that you attack the thing that enraged you, mindless of the safety of yourself or others.

That is a substantial problem, but not so bad if you've built the character right to start off with (i.e. it has an offensive bent and can take a punch) - at least not so bad for the PC. For the other PCs it can be a nightmare. I'm not so sure that making life difficult for others should be worth the kind of points this complication cranks out.

Well, when they start to question whether you should be a member of their team, that's a problem for you.

  8. Re: Omcv 1?

    True...

I'm having issues that they expect us to pay to read the rules. Might be a few years for me yet...

So, you think they should just give the rules away free? Given the nature of the Hero System and the nature of Hero System players, I'm not sure that would be a smart business decision. But perhaps I'm missing something.

  9. Re: Omcv 1?

Wow rj' date=' sorry for using the wrong initials when I don't even have the book yet. Shame, shame on me and my family. I shall never show my face here again.[/quote']

I'll just say that the correct name for the Characteristic is in the title of the thread.

  10. Re: Omcv 1?

Seriously people, all of this nonsense because someone might reclaim six points and spend it somewhere else? Those six points are gonna throw off the delicate balance of Hero characters to a degree never before seen. Oh, please.

Oh, and by the way, it's OMCV not MOCV or YMCA or whatever letter combinations you've come up with.

And what is this nonsense about superheroes not having Characteristics lower than a normal human? I've certain seen lots of Champions characters over the years with EGO, INT, and others at below the level of a normal human.

But I guess with 6th Edition finally out, you all need to find new pointless things to argue about for 50 pages.

  11. Re: Omcv 1?

I thought that they basically were too. The both have negative costs' date=' so in my mind that makes them the same thing.[/quote']

I'm pretty sure you people are thinking of GURPS which worked that way.

Hero, as far as I can recall, never had a rule lie that.

  12. Re: Screenshots

Had to post it here' date=' even if no one will (or should) really care.[/quote']

    Picture snipped.

What's the significance of this? The guy that Thundrax is talking to is Mark Derringer, the former superhero Avenger. Avenger is Steve Sloane's old PC. We created them back in 1983 for Brian Zomar's old SUNDER campaign.

So, over 25 years later, I have the surreal experience of being introduced to my old teammate for the first time.

    That's cool.

  13. Re: Steve's Chat Tonight (Wednesday, August 19)

Are you using Eastern Standard Time(?), cause most of us on the east coast of the US are on daylight savings time.

Dusterboy: EST is 5 hours behind GMT, so 9:00 PM Wed is 2:00 AM Thursday morning.

For future reference, Steve has a bad habit of using EST even during Daylight Savings Time -- treat his EST as EDT during the time that Daylight Savings Time is in effect.

  14. Re: Independent limitation in 6E

I think it's just plain gone. Not in the Index and I didn't stumble across it anywhere yet either.

Personally I loved it and thought it was vastly under-used in the official writeups.

Too bad, there's a lot of useful and cool things you can do with Independent. But it's easy enough to House Rule it back in as a Custom Modifier. Hopefully it's in the APG.

My guess is either APG or Fantasy Hero.

  15. Hey Steve:

    To quote 6E:

A Barrier, once created, is a physical object that remains in existence until destroyed by attacks, the passage of time, or other factors. If a character wants a Barrier that he has to “maintain,” he should apply the Limitation Costs Endurance (to maintain; -½).

The way I read this, you can define an appropriate method for your Barrier to go away when you purchase the Power. For example:

    • A wall of stone will last until it is destroyed or it is worn away by time.
    • A wall of ice will last until it is destroyed or it melts.

Can you also simply define a Barrier as dismissible? That is, when you no longer want it, you can just make it go away. Or could you define it to simply to go away when you are Stunned or knocked unconscious?

Basically, I'm looking at how to create the equivalent of 5e Force Walls. Obviously for a "Force Wall" that costs END to keep up, you use "Costs END to maintain" buy what about the equivalent of a 0 END Force Wall, can you simply buy the Barrier to 0 END and define it as going away when you are Stunned, Knocked Out, or wish to dismiss it?
