  1. Re: How do you guys deal with WoTC drones?

My Hero gaming group almost entirely also plays d20. So we play D&D on Saturdays and Hero on Sundays. I find the D&D combats a lot more engaging (I'm loving 4e) and the rest satisfactory. I find the HERO plotlines a lot more engaging (I've got an awesome GM)' date=' and the rest satisfactory. Between the two, my weekends are pretty awesome but I wouldn't be willing to give up either one in the long term.[/quote']

Well, plotlines aren't really game system specific. I've played in a number of different systems with both good and ok plotlines in each. Really plotlines are more GM and group specific :)

  2. Re: Vertigo Immunity

. . . And in the real world (in case you want to involve it at all :))' date=' motion sicknes is a sign of a healthy sense of balance. A character that never feels vertigo might have a lack of body coordination skills -- i. e., lower than normal DEX.[/quote']

I'd love to know where you got the information that suffering motion sickness is a sign of health?

  3. Re: How do you guys deal with WoTC drones?

    O RLY?

Ask them if they can make a 1st lvl character who is rich.

Yep, one can take the Wealth feat in D20 Modern...

Ask them if they can make a 1st lvl character that can take a lot of damage.

    Barbarian, 20 Con, Rage...

Ask them if they can make a 1st lvl character that is a nobleman.

Been there, done that. Doesn't take anything more than backstory.

Ask them if they can make a 1st lvl character that can turn someone into a frog.

Ask them if they can make a 1st lvl character that can turn themselves into a frog.

    With just the core books.

Which Core books? There are the D&D core books, D20 Modern Core books...

    Your turn to sneer derisively.

OK, make each of those with just 25+25 disad. Else you aren't really creating something like a 1st level character in HERO either.

  4. Re: Learning from the mistakes of others

I've noticed that more and more games are having some kind of flaws/disadvantage system where the players get points of some kind for taking them. The 7th sea system comes to mind' date=' and (naturally) Hackmaster. I think there was a western game with something similar. Ok, so three (maybe) games.[/quote']

GURPS, D6, Shadowrun, Deadlands (classic and Savage Worlds, not sure about D20). There are also addon products for D20 sold on places like rpgnow.com that add a flaws system.

  5. Re: Building Hero with Hero

And if I was the GM I'd not allow the hex and those hexes surrounding it to instantly burst into flame (unless they were filled with something particularly volatile) - it would take some while to build up, just as you could start a fire with a Zippo - it is unlikely to threaten anyone immediately, and once it has built to those levels it is beyond your control anyway (baring another power). It also relies on there being flammable material about, so it remains largely within the control of the GM how effective it is. In terms of a Hero combat, such a power would be of generally extremely limited utility. What you'd not be getting is a free 1 hex radius 2d6 RKA.

Basically he's getting what he paid for: not that much in this case.

Last time I checked, a fire that was 6 METERS (nearly 20 FEET) across was not exactly a little zippo flame... At that size we're talking about a fire releasing 10MW of heat at temperatures above 500F (assuming nothing more flammable than wood). That's enough heat energy to cause about 50 lbs of wood to spontaneously combust (the entire thing all at once) in just a few minutes (212 seconds). But, since it only needs to heat up the surface to that point, it would easily ignite the walls meters away in just a few seconds with that much heat output. Which means even more heat being released which spreads the fire... Pretty fast as long as it can keep finding air to supply it as it goes.

  6. Re: Rolling lots of D6s

It is only sindyr who doesn't want to roll them. I know Mr Long is good, but creating a rule to satisfy one player years before they even start - that's dedication to customer satisfaction :)

PS Lego dice rolling tower. I'm in awe.

    Boredom + Ingenuity = http://www.daemonstorm.com/role-playing/accessory/Lego-Dice-Tower

I need to go to the LEGO store again and find some more blocks to rebuild the front. Right now I have 2x1 transparent bricks making up sections of the front so you can see through, but they are a weakness in the structure as they don't have any offset overlap with surrounding bricks. So, time to get some more and make the whole front transparent :) I also want to make it so it folds down for transport rather than pulling the tower off the base, heheh.

  7. Re: Rolling lots of D6s

Holding tons of dice in your hand before attacking that villain is a simple pleasure but one I enjoy. So I have no idea why you'd want to roll less dice

Dice scatter is one reason. And is the reason I built my own lego dice tower for rolling lots of dice and keeping them confined. Another reason is speed up in the game. Even using clustering by 10's and other methods, it still takes more time the more dice one has to add up.

As for why 3 per die instead of 3.5. Well, you don't want to roll them, so A) you take a small penalty on the dice you don't roll and B) gets rid of the fraction for odd number of dice.

  8. Re: Yes, but what about the other guys?

The simplest solution is that while the character moves to an alternate reality' date=' the old one disappears, written over by the new one. This of course, destroys the old, but since the new are the same to the Nth degree, there is no difference. It's the same as the Star Trek transporter, since the person is not sent. They are encoded and transmitted to somewhere else and reconstructed, so essentially they are killed and remade anew. If there was an original James T Kirk, he has been dead and gone a thousand times over. The same can be said of us, where our cells and molecules are replaced over the years - there might be very little of the you that was born all those years ago - you are essentially a new person in a similar configuration to the old person, enough for us to handle continuity. [/quote']

This depends entirely on which episode you are watching. In some episodes it transmits the information and then recreates you at the other end. In other episodes the same transporter actually breaks you down and rebuilds you from the sent matter. So, in one case you are destroyed and a new copy is made, in the other, you are actually sent in the stream.

Examples of the "sent in stream" include the TNG episode where Barcley is beamed to another ship and finds that their are creatures in the matter stream with him while he is sent over

  9. Re: Random Spaceship Generator

I'll just weight the tile types as though it were random terrain - engines toward the back' date=' command towards the front and everything else in the middle.[/quote']

Well, engines can go in a few places. Typically placed in the rear, but can also be on the side or above and below the plane of the ship. The bridge at the front is a bad place for it unless you really do use the mark I eyeball for piloting (e.g. starfighters in Star Wars). Else, its better to bury the bridge of larger ships deeper into the heart of the ship to protect it (like where the CIC on modern naval vessels).

  10. Re: Mac compatible?

The other problem I have is that I hate paying monthly fees; I share the internet' date=' and hogging it for a game is not something I like; [/quote']

All of the MMOs in existence are designed for those on a 56k modem to be able to play. I can play WoW or EQ and be downloading files off Apple or Youtube with no noticeable change in performance of those sites.

  11. Re: Dresden files anti-tech aura

The problem with doing it as a suppress is that the items, once damaged, don't recover. And in ways it is a disadvantage. He can't use a cellphone, TV, modern radio, etc... has to have an old car or he has to actively work to keep his aura tucked in and under control. Yes, Butcher uses it as a plot device, but technically that is what any disad is for (e.g. hunted...).

The group I'm in has modeled it for our current game and it seems to be (and I'm sure the GM will correct me if I'm wrong), but basically the more active points the magic used by the caster is, the larger and more destructive the aura is to technology. Something like 1d6 per 10 active points with an explosion effect.

  12. Re: Learning from the mistakes of others

I enjoyed playing 3.x, but got tired of it after a while (like I do with almost all games). Level based games work for a few genres (like High Fantasy), but the turnoff for me was the long times with an unchanged character. With SR, GURPS, HERO, etc... I can see a character slowly changing over time rather than stair-stepping up in power.

  13. Re: Scientists claim warp drive is possible

Well, as you get to higher fractions of C you won't need nearly as much power for maintaining the systems as the passage of time inside the ship would be reduced.
