  1. OK, I'm running a game for some friends, and one of them is alone and being attacked by an ape-like creature with a goodly amount of Leap (just the characteristic, not Super Leaping). It's a Heroic campaign; The character has a small amount of TK, but she's still developing the power; as a result, she has STR10 that can be used to push, but not grab or throw. She has a held action, and the think leaps at her, so she smacks it with her TK. OK, he's 0 DCV being in mid-air and all, so she hits easily. Now the reality inversion begins.... I'm thinking, "well, that won't really hurt him, but it'll knock him down." But the Knockdown rules require that BODY be done to the target, which clearly isn't going to happen here (damage roll was 2 5 for 7 STUN, 2 BODY if it was considered a Strike). Ok, maybe for this particular instance, Knockback is the way to go, despite being a Heroic game. But "in the air" is a minus 1d6 on the Knockback roll. Huh? says I....then I realize that it assumes the target is flying and can "push back". Not the case here. So, maybe it's the equivalent of a martial shove, so I start trying to find my copy of the UMA. But then I read about TK on p230 of FREd that you can only use the grab and strike maneuver with TK unless you have bought the associated martial arts manuver. Seems to me shove should be in there too - it's less difficult in some ways than strike, and there's no STR bonus given in this case. Anyhow in the end, I ruled that by GM fiat the critter's forward progress was somewhat halted and that it tumbled, ending up on the ground - it seemed to make the most sense that way. But...is there a better way within the rules? Is this an area that might want to be addressed in 6ed? Or is there a ruling for 5ed about TK and shove I'm not aware of? (Likewise, how about KB and uncontrolled flight?)
  2. Re: This old wound... In the New Dawn campaign that's forming, I have a character with a sursed hip wound (can't be healed until the blade that caused it is unmade). I took it as a limitation (can't run, limps), bought down running and leaping, AND gave him a dependence on a pain-killing elixer that causes him to become less competent the longer he goes without.
  3. Re: High Tech High Noon +1 for that find! Much goodness there.
  4. Re: Setting a real point limit, instead of AP limit Why not stick with the AP cap for designing characters, but introduce a House Rule: Any construct above the AP cap may be requested but only in general terms. The GM will construct the actual power with appropriate limitations for game balance purposes, if it is allowed in the first place. The player will request the general parameters (e.g. RKA, AoE, what have you) and the GM will provide the hard numbers with an eye toward balance.
  5. Re: A New Dawn. 'Post-Apocalyptic' Fantasy Hmm...+5 STR for throwing distance only. Yikes, that's pretty lame - not that it bothers me, but I think that shortchanges it pretty badly. Using an atlatl only adds 2" of range? But good catch, I hadn't seen that sidebar. Repped.
  6. Re: A New Dawn. 'Post-Apocalyptic' Fantasy Not for long
  7. Re: A New Dawn. 'Post-Apocalyptic' Fantasy Well, my research indicates that the atlatl pretty well died out when the bow (of any kind) became available. Probably this was due to the better range and accuracy of the latter. FH pp164-166 gives stats for weapons. So, looking at the nearest equivalents we have" Bow, Light: 1d6K, STR Min 8, Range 95" Spear, Short: 1d6+1K, STR Min 8, range as per throwing rules for STR There's a Bow, Very Light, but I'd argue that may just be a fantasy construction for really tiny races, so... The Range is likely based on STR, but the atlatl provides a multiplier for the range. Kip has STR 10, which is 35 points more than needed to pick up a javelin, ro dart, or call it what you will (FREd pp34-35). So his standing throw with it would normally be 14", or 28" with a running throw. I'd say that a good stat for the weapon in Kip's hands would be: 1d6+1K, Range 28". Probably should take a 1/2 action to load IF he has a dart ready, a full action if not, and a 1/2 action to throw it. Sound OK? Anyhow, Gods help him if he's down to using the atlatl as his primary means of combat. He probably only knows how to use it because it's traditional more than anything else.
  8. Re: A New Dawn. 'Post-Apocalyptic' Fantasy I'm...working on the Atlatl. AS in, "probably making it up". Hey, it was in HD, and I figured the hand/wing configuration of the Strell would make bows impractical. Give me a few to uhhh...locate the correct reference material. Yeah, that.
  9. Re: A New Dawn. 'Post-Apocalyptic' Fantasy Works for me. Does New Dawn mint their own coins, or is everything using whatever is leftover, or is it all a barter economy at this point?
  10. Re: A New Dawn. 'Post-Apocalyptic' Fantasy Ummmm....a phased plasma rifle in the 40 watt range? Eh, beyond basic gear...I don't see him wearing armor, he doesn't need any external materia magika....a goodly supply of l'hassa so he can suck it back every day - maybe the stuff to make it (I assume that he knows how by this point in his life). Maybe some books that he's accumulated for his library. Beyond that, nope, not much he really needs. I don't see him as being very materialistic - at least, not anymore.
  11. Re: A New Dawn. 'Post-Apocalyptic' Fantasy Hopefully the last iteration of Kiporia. Gear and such isn't included, I figure you'll tell us what we have that we need to know about
  12. Re: Game of Thrones Stannis arguably disliked Renly more than the did the Lannisters - keep in mind he'd been nursing a grudge about not getting title to Storm's End for years and years. And it was a gamble anyway. His choices were: 1. Attack the capital at once, and hope to win quickly, then escape with hostages or endure a siege from his brother. 2. Take out Renly and absorb his army, then march in force to King's Landing. The fact that #2 failed was more due to Tyrion's able defense plans than to anything else. I have no issues in the way Stannis acted - even assuming he was totally rational, it was a gamble that made some sense. Not all gambles are won, you know.

  14. Re: A New Dawn. 'Post-Apocalyptic' Fantasy I worry that the Transforms are almost too effective here - given a bit of time, I can cure pretty much anything. Maybe I should put in a higher level of Extra Time, or maybe an Activation Roll?
  15. Re: A New Dawn. 'Post-Apocalyptic' Fantasy OK, here's the revision assuming that you are going to treat the healing of disease, poison, and insanity as a Transform. And I took Healing as Standard Effect, but depending on how you want to handle repeated castings, I might change that - your call of course! Also note that I ditched the Combat Luck to make room for more KS. I will have to rely on my FF and Missile Deflection, and my friends to keep me safe.
  16. Re: A New Dawn. 'Post-Apocalyptic' Fantasy A couple pf Healing questions: - Do you plan to use the "heal per wound" rules, or the "heal up to x points per day" method? - How would you define a method of healing disease/poison? A Drain or Suppress on the affliction? Or would a Transform be better? (I'm inclined to think it's a transform, but I thought I should ask!)
  17. Re: A New Dawn. 'Post-Apocalyptic' Fantasy To be honest, I had thought of something similar to your Pain Stealing, but yeah, that's for later. I think my current healing construct will work - it sort of does the supercharge thing, so I'm requiring it to take extra time (no "in combat" healing here), concentration, and gestures (laying on of hands). Right now I'm trying to figure a way to shoehorn in some of those lovely KS areas you have posted...he's just gonna have to take Scholar, I think
  18. Re: A New Dawn. 'Post-Apocalyptic' Fantasy I can rework Kip to handle Healing, sure. But....hmmm...that's gonna add a multipower. I think, though, I can dump the Neural stuff and replace it with "Empathy" and retain some EGO attacks - probably dump the entangle. Let me play with it and I'll send you a proposal later tonight.
  19. Re: A New Dawn. 'Post-Apocalyptic' Fantasy Thank you sir! The quote just popped out of thin air, but seemed to fit
  20. Re: A New Dawn. 'Post-Apocalyptic' Fantasy Whoops. That PRE attack wasn't supposed to be in there at all - I uploaded my "what if" file. I finally decided that a big Gandalf-level aura just didn't fit this guy at all. As for the gems, I see them as something made by him as part of creating each multipower reserve. Every Strell Psychic will have something similar (it needn't be a gem, though those are common - just something made by them and intensely personal that they graft into their own bodies). The process is long, painful, and personal, but provides a bonded focus that they use to focus their magical abilities. The ability to do this requires rolls on PS:Psychic Mage and KS:Mind Magic to accomplish. Once the foci are bonded, the mage can begin to learn how to manipulate the latent power that goes along with them (e.g. bonding the gem or what have you creates the multipower reserve, and then the mage can begin to learn the slots).
  21. Re: A New Dawn. 'Post-Apocalyptic' Fantasy And the Keoland reference really gave it away!
  22. Re: Game of Thrones The Red Priest is Thoros of Myr. I like the books, others don't. Eh, that's why we're all different. You like what you like, I like what I like. It's all good. But...can't we all agree to dislike Uwe Boll?
  23. Re: A New Dawn. 'Post-Apocalyptic' Fantasy I for one would welcome a good swordsman into the ranks Oooh, and someone has been playing Herohawk, er, Greyhero, er... I confess, I really do love the Greyhawk map/setting....
  24. Re: A New Dawn. 'Post-Apocalyptic' Fantasy OK, the tweaking turned into a bit more than that, but I think the whole fits together better now. I've also changed his name - Kip will do for short Let me know if I've overstepped any bounds. I kind of took the liberty of using the "head gems" as a means of focusing his powers so that everything is an OIF, but one gem per multipower seemed kind of appealing.
  25. Re: A New Dawn. 'Post-Apocalyptic' Fantasy In working on my character tweak (which has gotten into a bit more than that), I remembered some questions I wanted to ask: 1. What constitutes a "Human" class of minds for this game, vs. an "Alien" class? I need to know if that EGO attack is going to work on a vampire or a demon or what have you after all 2. How tall on the average are Strell? I assume they are rather light for their height, but...are they compact or long and lanky?
