  1. Re: Ultraviolet vision- What the heck would it do?

Realistically' date=' UV vision has very few applications that would be relevant in fantasy -- there's less natural UV light than there is visible light. However, there's a tradition in RPGs, dating back to D&D, of thinking that UV vision allows seeing by starlight.[/quote']

That's kinda what I thought. I knew a bit about what UV is like in the real world, but it really looks like it'll probably fall into my aforementioned category of "uh, yeah, the Elf can see it."

  2. I'm playing an elf in a Fantasy Hero game, and the elven package deal includes ultraviolet vision. Everybody knows what IR does, lets you see heat. The GM and I are both wondering, what the heck would UV be good for?

Does anybody know of a practical application for this other than some odd thing the GM decides "uh yeah, the elf can see it."?

  3. I didn't think I asked that right.

Basically, when does a block occur, and how does it affect subsequent phases?

I have a character being attacked- Can he block that attack if it is not occurring on his phase, or does he have to abort to it if it is not?

What's confusing me is that someone can block and set their self up to strike first their next phase. But if it is an action that has to be aborted to if it's not their phase, then they can't strike first on the next one because they just used their next action by aborting to defend their self.

Does it make sense what I'm asking? The idea of a defensive action that requires an attack roll is throwing me for a loop.

    Thanks Steve.

  4. I hope I ask this right.

When Blocking in combat, does the action have to be in the same phase as the attack it's blocking or can it be used like dodge, to take effect until the next phase?

Sorry, just coming back to playing after several years and scratched my head when I got this during my refresher course.

    Thanks!!

  5. What stat is used to determine the attack roll for Transform?

Specifically, we're playing "A Night Out of the Rain" from FH Battlegrounds and one of the PCs volunteered his services to Ille Sorden, and thus will shortly be transformed into a Shadow by the Demon Minted Coin that he accepted. What would be used for the attack roll, Sorden's OCV or ECV, or is it something different because of the Trigger on the coin?

    Thanks!!

  6. Re: SpaceCraft Miniatures...

Yeah, I just can't find any scale information on them. I'm not worried much about ship-to-ship scale or anything, I just want to know the actual size of the models. The Cold Navy ships also don't have many small / fighter craft it would seem?

Thanks all, some excellent resources here!

I highly recommend the Cold Navy stuff. I have the Terran and Kharadorn fleets and they're beautiful. And their website is Xtreme-hobby.com. They have the size of all the minis there.

And if I can throw up a plug for a friend's store, try Exodus Road Hobbies and Minatures at exodus-road.com. Great people that take good care of customers. They have Cold Navy.

  7. Re: Re-imagining the Star Wars universe.

In my opinion, the midichlorians don't generate Force as much as they are simply found where there is a lot of Force. Perhaps midichlorians consume Force; hence, high concentrations of the Force would attract a large quantity of midichlorians, similar to the way that a large amount of excrement attracts a large quantity of flies.

    YMMV

Okay, now that explanation I'll buy.

  8. Re: Re-imagining the Star Wars universe.

I guess I'm just easy to please but I have very few gripes about the Star Wars movies. I've been an SW geek since I was 5 years old in 77. I've seen the people that hate the prequels and the Ewoks and I don't know, I guess I just see it as no matter what the annoying parts are it's still a continuation of the story and I get to find out what happens next in the big picture.

So my opening diatribe out of the way, the things I would change are to get rid of the midichlorians. Let the Force stay mystical and mysterious, don't quantify it and explain it. It's like a joke, it's just not as funny when the punch-line is explained.

And Jar-jar was a little annoying so axe him or at least get rid of his comic-relief factor.

  9. Re: Post your Cybernetics!

A.C.I.D. ( Acidic Cannon of Internal Design)

A.C.I.D. is an elaborate and ill-thought out idea. It harnesses and concentrates the users' stomach-acids and projects them through a reinforced chest catheter which funnels the acids through a cannon that bursts out of the firer's stomach and hopefully douses the targets with an acidic spray. Although it has plenty of surprise-potential, A.C.I.D. has not been perfected and tends to ruin the clothes and digestive systems of its users, probably limiting its potential as the "Derringer Of The Cyber-Age".

    17real pt. cost: 1) A.C.I.D. ( Acidic Cannon of Internal Design): RKA 3d6, Armor Piercing (+1/2), Area Of Effect Nonselective (14" Cone; +3/4) (101 Active Points); 3 Charges which Recover every 1 Week (-1 3/4), Activation Roll 13-, Jammed (-1 1/4), Side Effects (2d6 killing attack NND; -1/2), No Range (-1/2), No Knockback (-1/4), Gradual Effect (1 Turn (Post-Segment 12); -1/4), Inaccurate 1/2 OCV (-1/4), Restrainable (Removed by cyber-surgery ; -1/4)

    9 2) Stomach-Reinforced Armor: Armor (8 PD/8 ED), Hardened (+1/4) (30 Active Points); Activation Roll 8- (covers Hit Locations: 12-13) (-2), Restrainable (Removed by cyber-surgery ; -1/4)

Long time ago, a player in a CyberPunk game actually wanted something like this.

    Total real cost: 26 pts.

Off topic and pretty late I know, but that's just gross! In a funny, cartoon sci-fi attack kind of way, but still gross. I rep you.

  10. Re: A request for examples in sourcebooks.

Alien Wars in particular is where this thought comes from for me, and the Xenovores. I'd like to see statted out soldiers even if it's only a couple different types just to have a starting point.

One thing I did really like about the Viper book was that it had sample agents in the back.

  11. Re: A request for examples in sourcebooks.

A 13 str' date=' 13 dex, 15 con, 13 body xenovore is a typical example just as a 10 str, 10 dex, 10 con, 10 body human is a typical example. Most xenovores will fall into the typical range.[/quote']

Okay, this is something I've always been a bit unclear on. If you take what a package deal includes, say +5 STR, +2 DEX, etc. and so forth, and add it to a base 10 stat across the board character,do you arrive at a typical member of this class, race, or whatever it is? Or do you add the PD stat values to whatever you were going to give the character anyway? (I just noticed I have a thing for really long sentences when typing but that's beside the point.)

Everyone please throw your copper in, I'm interested to know what you think.

  12. Something I would like to see in sourcebooks is, in addition to, or instead of, a package deal for a member of a race is an example of that race. Y'know, a typical Xenovore, a typical elf, etc..

As an example, Ben posted a "savage Xenovore" type over at SH Fandom, fully statted out.

Or is there a way to apply a package deal to a basic stat-line to arrive at a typical example? Sometimes abook will hhave sample characterthat are not necessarliy typical. These usually dont match up with the '+5 strength' or whatever is given in the PD. I realize I may be missing a very basic precept of HERO so anyone have any input, maybe something official from Mr. Long?

    Thanks in advance.

  13. Re: My group voted ... It's Star Hero!

AW has lots of good package deals, lots of good tech. I'd recommend getting it just because I love gizmos in my games. From what I remember there are PDs for every branch of the military, and quite a few for each branch. I'd say the book is worth it just for the crunch factor, as most HERO stuff is, although I don't think I'd run a campaign in it but that's just 'cause of my lack of imagination for that genre.

Terran Empire also has lots of PDs for the military (I'm assuming your'e looking for military if your looking at AW.)

  14. Re: Valdorian Age

Mine should be delivered at the house on the 9th, along with Turakian Age. From what I hear it may be a better setting to put my CthulhuFH campaign in. Not much magic floating around and the PCs relatively normal kinda like in HPL's stories.

  15. Re: A question about dungeons.

cool, thanks for all the answers. Yeah I pretty much agree with the general consensus that dungeons ain't that much fun anymore, at least not in the hack n slash way they used to be. I'll maybe throw one in occasionally but with nowhere near as many monsters and treasure as in the old days. I'm much more interested in role playing and creating a story with the PC's actually accomplishing something that can affect the game world at large. More Lord of the Rings than Tomb of Horrors. I like the ideas such as the inhabited dungeon, seems more realistic even though may cringe at the thought of realism in a fantasy game. I guess the more proper term would be "logical" . And you know what's funny, on the subject of treasure, as a player I have not much interest in getting lots of it. When I started playing FH about 8 or 9 years ago it was the first fantasy I'd played since DnD in high school. The emphasis was much more on role playing and with all the cool stuff you could do with Hero I didn't even think about the + 18 Vorpal Dragon Decapitator and all that kind of stuff much at all. Although I have yet to play a wizard in Hero. Lots of opportunity there.
