Generic Star Hero Galactic Map

I was just wondering if anyone had any idea where one could get a galactic map (much like the one in the Free Stuff for the TE Galactic Map) that would allow you draw in any empires that were suitable for your own campaigns? I kinda thought it would be useful. :)

Re: Generic Star Hero Galactic Map

this is a nice site:

http://www.anzwers.org/free/universe/milkyway.html

go to the big map, plot a grid over it, draw a few wiggly lines for your empires, draw in a few key stars, and there you have your galactic map.

the whole site is quite good. It gives you a nice sense of scale

Nice site! I used some of its reference materials when writing SH stuff.

I'm hoping that when Campaign Cartographer: Cosmographer is available, it will allow for the creation of the quasi-3D maps such as this site has. Even better would be if it would let you rotate the maps and see them from different angles, but that's probably a bit much to ask for. ;)

I don't think that that would be too hard if you made an output of the information that is readable by the program 'Celestia'. ( http://www.shatters.net/celestia/ ) Its data files are in a text baced form so you would only need to create an interface for the person making the map.

Adam thank you. The map is perfect. Exactly what I was looking for.

Drakkenkin Thanx for the tip on Celestia. I kinda like it better than It's Full Of Stars. Btw Sourceforge is very cool.

I also hope Cosmographer will be able to do this.

In the meantime, you can get such functionality out of ChView for stars within 250ly of Sol (or 150ly of Sol if you want the more accurate Hipparchos/Tycho survey data):

It isn't much good for the galaxy-spanning TE setting, but it's great for campaigns set a little closer to home.

Interstingly, this is one of the sources I used to design the TE map.

Re: Generic Star Hero Galactic Map

I'm looking forward to a new program from NBOS Software (http://www.nbos.com). They're developing a program called AstroSynthesis that looks like it will do everything I need a star-mapping program to do.

I haven't heard anything about CC: Cosmographer, but since I already have so much invested in CC, I may have to look into that one, especially if they integrate them.

I keep getting the following error: 'Too many redirects occurred trying to open “http://www.anzwers.org/error.htmlâ€. This might occur if you open a page that is redirected to open another page which then is redirected to open the original page.'

Can anyone suggest how I might get to the content?

Suitable I don't know. But this one is informative and interesting. http://members.nova.org/~sol/chview/milkyway.jpg

I've gotten that from Safari, but was able to get there with Firefox. Try a different browser.

Just a heads up to all interested parties. I tried the AstroSynthesis program and in my estimation it is...ok. Just ok. It's not great. The program will generate systems, sectors. You can create trade routes and/or separate systems by political affiliation. You can build systems manually or randomly (I didn't build any manually myself so I can't speak to the programs ability regarding those features.). I will say that this thing will build lots and lots of systems if you tell it to. I had it building (sorta by accident) something on the order of 96,000 or 97,000 systems (each with planets and such), but the program crashed before it finished (too bad really, I was curious).

Like I said it's okay. I found it to be a bit clunky, but that was just me and it is Version 1 so I suppose one could see what will happen with the program over time. I would suggest anyone who feels this could be the answer to their system generation issues to download the trial version and test it out. Here's the link.

Re: Generic Star Hero Galactic Map

I was rather pleased with AstroSynthesis myself. Every planet and star has a place where campaign notes can be attached, some visible to the players and some only visible to the game master. It can also output selected star systems as a large HTML file with hotlinks for use in one's PBM website.

Spheres of influence can be generated, trade routes, and empires. It even comes with a dataset of actual stars out to about 20 light years.

It can also generate AVI movies rotating the map in three dimensions.

Re: Generic Star Hero Galactic Map

Of course you have to keep in mind that I have a weakness for three-dimensional starmaps. AstroSynthesis does that quite well, allowing one to spin the map and zoom in and out. At my request, the good folks at NBos included the ability to import ones own custom star data.

AstroSynthesis also does a good job of randomly creating every planet and moon in each solar system.

However, if one is just interested in a game campaign map, you can get away with a flat map.

If your Star Hero campaign's FTL drive is one of those "jump-link" drives (like the game StarFire or the novel The Mote In God's Eye) a useful freeware tool is yEd. This allows one to create boxes for stars, connect them with links, then autoformat them into a pleasing arrangement.

I have to say, Nyrath, I've used your Project Rho as a definitive jumping-off point for all sorts of Science-Fictional campaigns over the last several years. Your links go beyond what's simply required for starmaps. It's great stuff! Glad to see you on these boards!
