Hugh Neilson
Re: How does this grab you? Well I'm glad I'm not the only one that got that attack roll things mixed up. I think this is similar to Multiple Power Attacks. We're told this is the way things were previously, but it's not the way anyone I know played prior to 5e. That said, I'm OK with the changes. There's nothing wrong with requiring a new attack roll to inflict damage, or with applying hit location penalties, since the target is (presumably) struggling. There may be some lack of realism to Aunt May being able to wriggle around enough that the Thing is no longer gripping her neck, but if there's a large STR disparity, the target is never going to break free anyway, so it just means it will take longer, not that the fight will reverse. And I'm definitely a fan of the ruling that "grab and throw" can't be used to grab one oppoent and use him to hit a second as one attack action, which has been an inordinately effective tactic. As for the changes I can offer three perspectives: 1. Steve is a smart guy and has been playing Hero a very long time. I can appreciate the decisions he makes. Not that they are necessarily infallible, just that I think he has a pretty good handle on what's what. 2. Steve has worked with/talked to Steve Peterson and the others that made the system what it is. If he says this is the way it was but was never documented as such I'm inclined to believe him. He certainly has more insight into what the developers of the game had in mind than perhaps any of us. 3. Don't use the ruling. The rules as presented are to resolve disputes over how they should be applied - to reduce or eliminate ambiguity. That doesn't mean that the rules agree with your style of play, just that a baseline exists so we all have a basis to start from. It's like any other rule change - let's be grateful a rule exists with an implementation we can debate about rather than arguing about a rule that needs to be created. Many of us find the rule fine as is. Some of you don't. That is entirely fine. I'm just grateful the rule exists. The original question was "is it just me?" and I think the answer is "no, but many of us (who knows if it's a majority or not) find the ruling fine." As far as I can see, the main reason for this thread to continue would be for those (presumably few) of us who are dissatisfied with the standard rule, along with anyone else interested in tinkering for the fun of it, to discuss alternatives. I personally think I know what I'll try next time I run (basically what you'd expect from my previous posts), and have no new ideas. But if others suggest new ideas, I'm likely to get back in on the discussion.
