gewing
Re: Another advanced and weird material I don't know if it is feasible - with an Ion gun, where molecules are the projectiles (just like Ion engines) - the molecule must be able to hold a charge in order to be magnetically accellerated. These are carbon molecules - I don't know how well it would work. There is research into inserting atoms of other elements inside the Buckyballs. Imagine using an ion gun to propel buckyballs, whether egg shaped or spherical, full of tungsten or uranium.

Deucex
Re: Another advanced and weird material You'd want long-chain fullerenes' date=' not buckyballs for armour.[/quote'] thought you'd want that for cutting tools and nanotubes for armor? BobGreenwade
Re: Another advanced and weird material You'd want long-chain fullerenes' date=' not buckyballs for armour.[/quote']I'd want what I guess you'd call "buckyplates" -- imagine wearing a chestplate that's all one molecule. Curufea
Re: Another advanced and weird material You'd have the Andromeda's hull Molecular bonds would create quite strong structures. However - if the material was all one molecule - I wonder if the molecule's integrity was broken in one part, what happens to the rest of the molecule? That, and repairing it would be impossible. You'd need the infrastructure to produce a new breastplate in your size if it ever gets damaged. Reminds me of Diamond Age, actually - a scifi book about nanotechnology. DARPA aparently claims to have an experimental fuel cell using this technique that can hold 90 times its weight in hydrogen.

That's a lot of gas...
