Background/History: As with Barda this info comes from the Cosmic Teams [/url}website

The New God, Scott Free, was born 300 years ago to the ruler of New Genesis, the Highfather and his wife Avia. But instead of growing up on this paradise, Scott was used as a bartering tool to prevent war between New Genesis and Apokolips. To this end, two rulers agreed to exchange their own sons. Darkseid's son, Orion, came to live with Highfather, and Scott was sent to live on Apokolips. Under the evil tutelage of Granny Goodness, Scott grew into a master escape artist and secretly worked with Himon, a freedom fighter. It was during this time that he discovered an awful truth — that he was the bearer of the Antilife Equation! This equation is Darkseid's dark grail, the one thing which can control all life in the universe. By uttering a scant few words, Scott accidentally killed hundreds of people. From then on he dedicated himself to ensuring he would never use the Equation again. Scott never told anyone about his "gift" and he eventually escaped to Earth in 1798 with the help of his future wife, Big Barda. (Orion #25) He fell in love with his adopted planet and would forever split his time between Earth and New Genesis.

Several years after assuming the stage career of "Mister Miracle" the esape artist, he joined the new Justice League. (Justice League America #1, 5.87). His manager Oberon also signed on, serving as the JLI's administrative assistant. Scott was captured by the villain Manga Kahn and secretly replaced with a robot duplicate. The real Mr. Miracle was forced to headline the "Miracle Mister" Universe tour. (JLI Special #1) This duplicate was destroyed by Despero (#39, 6.90), and a funeral was held for Scott. (#40) The true Scott Free soon returned (#42) but remained only a short time more with the JLI. He resigned after a battle against one of General Glory's old enemies. (#50) Though he had begun to train a replacement (Shilo Norman, Mr. Miracle III), Shilo never joined the League (he did assist them on the previously mentioned mission, however). Mr. Miracle left Earth with his mother-in-law, wife, and father for New Genesis. (Mr. Miracle, v.2 #28).

As ever, he soon returned to Earth. This time he freed JLA members Fire, Wonder Woman, and Obsidian from possession by the Source. After the death of his father, Scott was expected to succeed him as ruler of New Genesis. Scott had dreaded this day and defied common law. He refused to go through the ceremony which would bestow him with his god-power. What he could tell no one (not even his wife) was that he feared any situation where he might eventually be tempted to use the Antilife Equation. (Fourth World #12) Instead, he and Barda returned to Earth. (Mr. Miracle v.3 #1-2, 4-5.96) He immediately realized his responsibility and embraced his heritage; he inherited his god-power and became the bearer of the Alpha energy — the antithesis of Darkseid's Omega Energy. (#3) But he did not become ruler of New Genesis. Leaving that task to Takion, he and Barda took up a temporary residence aboard the Justice League Refuge. The couple underwent a brief separation due to Scott's lack of consideration for her feelings. (#4-5) He left Earth after one case with Oberon's Miracle Workers, Inc. service to search for New Genesis. (#7) Scott's wife and brother, Orion, returned to the JLA for a short time, but Scott did not join them. (JLA #17-41)

Orion eventually discovered that Scott possessed the Equation, but the secret remains between them. Orion also possessed the secret for a time but was able to divest himself of the knowledge. (Orion #25) Scott currently resides on Earth with Barda and they are active in adventuring.

Personality/Motivation: Scott Free is motivated by love. Particuarly, a) love of Freedom and Liberty and B) love of Barda. Probably not in that order. Beyond that, he is a fun loving guy, seeking new thrills and experiences. He has an intense desire to live a "normal" family life. He loves his family on New Genesis, and his family on Earth.

Scott also has a love of the spotlight. His "Day Job" when he's not fighting evil is that of a big stage escape artist. David Blaine is nothing to him. Miracle Man uses his mind as his main weapon. He's also incorporated Apokoliptian technology into his crime fighting and his act. According to at least one source he is the "God of Escape". He tends to refer to it as Escapology.

Quote: "I can get out of this."

Powers/Tactics: Having what qualifies as superhuman agility and coordination, Miracle Man is a dodging and weaving style martial artist. His technological background allows him to create many toys to fight crime with. As far as I can tell he likes to incorporate these items into his costume or make them appear contrary to their use.

Campaign Use: Well, if you need to escape somewhere he'd be the guy to have on your team. Though you rarely get to choose whose on your team then.

He's a champion of freedom and justice and he is married to a powerhouse so that's a nice trick.

Appearance: lean, athletic, handsome. Black hair, blue eyes, and some bizzar color choices when in costume. His costume is a bizare yellow, green, and red afair with strange symbols, piping, and a full face mask.

Re: CHAR: Mister Miracle

I'm a bit stumped on the Alpha Effect or whatever his God Power is. I've never seen it and none of my web research aids mentions much more than "Its the antithis of Darkseid's Omega Effect". He also possesses the AntiLife equation that Darkseid seeks. I didn't know what to do with that either.

Re: CHAR: Mister Miracle

Great write up as always.

He almost never actually uses the Alpha Energy and only used the anti-life equation once, so you could skip both, but in HERO terms there are some things you could do.

For the Alpha Energy, you could give him a 606 point VPP, enough to Summon a Nega-Beam (USPD, p.261), allowing him to mirror Darkseid's signature attack. He is in theory now Darkseid's opposite number. Maybe give it a -1 limitation "Only when the writer remembers".

For the Antilife Equation, probably a Social Limitation: Secret holder of Darkseid's most cherished goal (-20), to reflect the fact that Darkseid would do anything to obtain it. You could fold the actual power into the massive Alpha Energy VPP; 606 points should be enough to wipe out or control all life with judicious use of Megascale.

Or, like almost every writer likely to use him, you could just skip it.

Re: CHAR: Mister Miracle

Freaking crazy cool write-up, Enforcer84.

From Darkseid's wiki entry:

According to writer Mark Evanier, Jack Kirby modeled Darkseid on actor Jack Palance.

This, I did not know. I love Jack Palance! How sweet/strange is that?

More concerning the Anti-Life Equation:

Darkseid's greatest ambition is to eliminate all freewill from the universe and re-shape it into his own image. To this end, he seeks to unravel the mysterious Anti-Life Equation, which will allow him to control completely the thoughts and emotions of all living beings in the universe. The Anti-Life Equation has often been portrayed as a quasi-mystical power that forces a listener to agree with whatever the wielder says, while other times, it is portrayed as a comprehensive scientific theory on how to dominate any living mind, whatever its nature may be.

While he has yet to obtain a complete working copy of the Anti-Life Equation, Darkseid has tried on several other occasions to achieve dominance of the universe through other methods. He has a special interest in Earth, as he believes humans possess collectively within their minds most, if not all, fragments of the Anti-Life Equation. Darkseid intends to probe the minds of every human in order to piece together the Equation.

Sounds like some kind of Mind Control. Could be built as Extra-Dimensional Movement (to a Universe where all free will is an illusion, except for yours). Could be +20 levels of Persuasion, too, I guess.

The following is from a nifty site:

http://www.dcdatabaseproject.com/Mister_Miracle_(Scott_Free)

Alpha Effect: Mister Miracle wields the Alpha Effect. Its powers seem to be canceling out or undoing Darkseid's Omega Effect.

Possibly best built as a Heal/Resurection, or Transform (reversal of Omega Effect)...either potentially with the Transdimensional advantage depending on how you do things.

A nega-beam doesn't really seem like the opposite of Darkseid's power to me.

Anti-Life Equation: Mister Miracle also has the complete Anti-Life Equation, the Anti-Life Equation is said to give the being who learns it power to dominate the will of all sentient and sapient races. It is called the Anti-Life Equation because "if someone possesses absolute control over you - you're not really alive." but he refuses to use it as it reduces other beings to mindless slaves.

Hm... I'd say this is a really powerful Mind Control... or maybe a Mental Transform that destroys your EGO. I love how Mister Miracle won't use it because of its sfx. :)

It was more a case that one of Darkseid's signature powers is the Omega Beam, written up in HERO as the Nega Beam. If the Highfather had equal power now held by Mister Miracle, then MM should have a VPP or other framework of a size similar to Darkseids.

Re: CHAR: Mister Miracle

Yeah. I saw the Anti-Life Equation as A bigbad Mindcontol. But the XDM version is a nice idea. Apparently the only people who know Scott has the ALE is Scott himself and Orion.

As for the Alpha Effect, I see where Oddhat is going. But as most writers have ignored it, I will too.

Re: CHAR: Mister Miracle

Right, right, right. It would have to be a godlike VPP, and the nega-beam is just being used as a reference. Lordy. That kind of power is truly cosmic. I can see how using the HERO system (and the fiction of comic books) is a great way to reduce such concepts to abstraction; at which point lines need to be drawn in order to create an environment where these beings can interact in a meaningful way. Beyond that, it should be enough to simply acknowledge that we are attempting to represent space-gods. :dyn

It's ultimately one of the problems that we as gamers have to deal with even more carefully than the writers. Darkseid, at his full power, can create near-Kryptonian level beings at will, reshape continents, rip through space and time, and do pretty much whatever else he pleases. No wonder he's rarely written at that level. Highfather, if he really was equal and opposite, should have been able to do the same, and supposedly Scott Free should have some significant fraction of that power now.

Except that it's hard to write or run stories that challenge characters on that level without either threats of a similar level or pure soap opera. Those can be fun, but they're not what fans of a super-escape artist are really looking for.

Re: CHAR: Mister Miracle

Well, since these guys are somewhat defining reality, their opposition to each other could justify their pseudo-limited common effectiveness. If free will is viewed as a major factor in defining reality, the Anti-Life Equation takes on a great deal of significance by dividing that power between all sapient beings; with its existence... not utilization.

Regardless, I think it's cool that we can tell such a variety of stories with these characters... naturally. :D
