Capitalizing soldier is part of the US Army party line. It's a pointless' date=' make-you-feel-good gesture that becomes a huge pain in the ass whenever you don't capitalize it on a form, because it's apparently as big an error as putting your rank down as Major General when you're a PFC.[/quote']

 

Sounds like that's one of your hot buttons, but if that's the custom, then it shows respect for the person being referred to, much like capitalizing "Mom", "Dad", "Uncle Ted" or "Grandma" (something I don't always remember to do).

There's a difference between "Hi Mom" and "I just said hi to my mom". Similarly, there's a difference between "Good job, Soldier" and "saving soldiers lives". At least in English.
