starblaze
Hello everyone, I have just recenlty discovered a group of younger people, I am 45 and they are in their early twenties or younger, and they are interested in Champions. In fact they really like the system so far and I am excited to be back in the saddle again. I have not GMed a Champions game in about a year since the last one lost direction. So anyway I have been considering using the San Angelo City of Heroes instead of the Champions Universe setting that I have been using for years. However, there are some differences in the two settings. Do you think that the two universes are compatable or not? How would you merge the two settings together? Also, could anyone please point out some San Angelo links for me? Apparrently Gold Rush games website has closed down. Thank you for your support starblaze

Thanks to everyone here who has expressed concern about the "demise" of GRG. And thanks, also, to Rob Miller who let me know about this thread once I was back in contact with the world. Also many thanks to Greg Stolze and others for the words of support. Unfortunately, I have been exceptionally slow to do any sort of updating on GRG items, from the web site to projects. For those who really want the skinny... The long and the short of it is that with Margaret at home taking care of our daughter and me back to work full-time outside of the house, I have ended up working a tremendous amount of over-time. What little precious "free time" I have left is taken up largely by familial commitments, leaving little meaningful time to work on GRG projects. Add to this the fact that I had some server issues and all of my goldrushgames.com e-mail was blocked (returning "bounce" or rejected messages to all senders) starting back in May or June. This went one for several months before I realized that I was getting none of the mail from those servers (I was still getting e-mail from other addresses, so I thought it was just a "slow period" for GRG-mail-related messages). Well, the issue was resolved and mail is coming through again. The next step is to try to salvage the web site. I still have no idea what;s happened there. Apologies to anyone who's been waiting for me to respond to one message or another. If you tried to contact me in the last three months or so, assume I never got your message and feel free to resend it t me. Action! System is dead? Well, I've long held that the life of a product is in the hands of the consumers, not our. We could crank out two new products a month all year long but if no one bought and used them, then the system would be effectively "dead." The reverse is true for products with no new support material coming out. As a fellow consumer and gamer, however, I totally understand how some of you feel about the A!S. I had big plans, decent execution, and lousy follow through. The fix? A relaunch starting with Second Edition. When? Not for some time. I have things going on in my life right now -- and for the foreseeable short term -- that will all but prevent me from doing any substantial work on it (or Sengoku 2nd Ed for that matter). I'd like to round up some help to develop these products. That is probably the next practical step. Once again, thanks to everyone. And good gaming! __________________ Mark Arsenault President, Gold Rush Games Action! System now OGL! Eureka! TheQuestionMan
Re: San Angelo in the Champions Universe Ok, now for the minority report. Champions Universe vs. San Angelo Universe. Champions Universe vs. San Angelo Universe Pros & Cons Pro - Champions has around 25yrs campaign histories both official and homemade to draw from. Con - To much background/history could stifle the GM's own creations. Pro - Champions has gone through 4 Setting changes, but retained the feel of the originals. Con - This may cause some confusion from veteran Players. Pro - The Champion Universe has the support of HERO Games Discussion Boards members and their Resources. Con - SAU is not as actively supported. Pro - San Angelo in this Posters opinion is more colourful and engaging. If you are familiar with Astro City then you know why I love this RPG Homage. Con - San Angelo does not have as large support group as Champions Universe. Pro - Champions Universe is a living universe with new Sourcebooks published every 3-4 months. Con - San Angelo is a dead universe with no new official products. Pro - Champions Universe feels very Four Colour. Con - The CU is very open Themed and sometimes confusing to new Players. Pro - San Angelo Universe feels very Golden/Silver Age. Con - The SAU Theme may make the Players feel restricted in the characters they can play. More later... Sketchpad
Re: San Angelo in the Champions Universe Do you think that the two universes are compatable or not? How would you merge the two settings together? Howdy Starblaze ... I've always used the CU and SA:CoH as being in the same world, just different coasts. That way I can use characters from both sources in a game
Lord Liaden
Re: San Angelo in the Champions Universe The main practical differences between San Angelo's world and the published Champions Universe are twofold. One, the source of superpowers in the modern world is the "Flux" (physics experiment out of control) in SA, versus the "Walpurgisnacht Working" (magic experiment out of control) in CU. The two events are actually close to each other in time (although there was a subsequent Flux experiment which resulted in a new generation of heroes), and work in much the same way to enable a whole range of super powers, from supertech to mutations to psionics to magic; so it would be fairly easy to substitute one for another. Two, the SA world doesn't include known aliens, so if you wanted to use CU alien races you'd have to work them into the background of SA. In practice this shouldn't be difficult, though, since the present-day CU doesn't feature a major alien presence on Earth, while SA focuses mostly on the city's local heroes and events. If you confine most of the impact of past alien incursions to outside San Angelo, that shouldn't have much of an impact on the way the city is now.
