The math suggests they exist. But the experimental evidence for many of these is NIL. If you look at transistors the description used for describing them is electrons and holes. It makes the math work wonderfully, and transistors work as predicted, but what is really going on is much messier. Good example of when the math works but reality is not quite bit messier.
