GMing style, what else apart from 'Round the Table'?

Then you may need to get a bit heavy handed - threaten to rewrite their characters for them. It sounds like they may not fully understand the concepts involved (are they new to RP?). A GM can't afford to be a wimp. In some ways he has to take a leadership role - all in the interest of making it enjoyable. A football game doesn't work if there is no teamwork.

"New is a relative term" At this point all of the players have years of experience RPing. The "newest" one is the wife of one of the players. She has to look up the rules half the time, but she's a very good role player. Experience isn't the problem. The role-playing style is. Everyone wants to have fun. It's just that some people's definition of fun involves challenging the GM and other players (note I said players, not characters).

Perhaps the group is not compatible. Different play styles are enjoyed by different players, and not all styles are compatible. If a portion of the group wants a co-operative gaming experience and a portion wants a player vs player game, perhaps you need two different games for the two different styles.

Is this a situation where the player plays against the GM and other players all the time or just in this campaign?

Once had an issue where a player became very competitive with the GM and other players after his GF joined our group. Talking to him did not remedy the issue, but he sure did come around when we invited his GF to a couple of sessions without him. She was a very good roleplayer and he quit being the showoff/jerk that he had turned into when she first started gaming with us.

Re: GMing style, what else apart from 'Round the Table'?

Just remembered another situation where the story arcs called for the players to stay together and act as a team but one player kept wanting to solo. The GM would give him his 5 or 10 minutes then give the other 5 of us our 45 to 60 minutes because we were together in a group. When the player complained the GM said he was trying to make it fair for everybody by giving everyone the same amount of time. The loner soon figured out that if he did not want to spend 5/6ths of the gaming session watching then he needed to stay together with the rest of the team.

Another suggestion I have is 'bluebooking,' not sure if it will work for you based on some of your previous comments about players having real life time constraints outside of the game, but here it is for consideration...

Our group games every other week and between sessions we exchange emails where everyone takes care of things in downtime. Investigations, romances and other solo stuff gets taken care of between sessions and we use our time together to settle the big stuff like when the investigation leads to a villian's hideout. Or a bunch of 'little' storylines at converge into one big one.

Take a look at http://wardens.angeva.com/log-downtime.asp?Site=W4 it has the downtime logs for our current Champions campaign. It may give you some ideas...
