clsage
Using 5th Ed I'm building a relatively low powered sonic device/weapon that does a fixed amount of damage. In general use (ie: at range against organic targets) it only acts as a stunning device. However, if used at extreme close range (ie: pressed to the skin of the target) it can cripple or even kill, much like the "phaser on low power assassination(s)" mentioned in the subject line..... My primary question(s): is there an obvious modifier to allow for the variation of effect due to range ? Am I over thinking the build ? Anyone have suggestions ? Thanks. -Carl-
CptPatriot
Re: Modeling The "Killing The Assasins" Technique From ST:VI Assuming you are using Attack Versus Alternate Defense (“AVAD”) with the “All or Nothing modifier” from the 6th Edition for your stunning attack, use the “Does Body” advantage (+1). In reality, unless you are gonna allow it to be used often that way, you could get away with allowing it as a one time thing. There is no modifier for varying the effect based on the range of the weapon on the short end. On the longer end, they have the “Reduced By Range” disadvantage (6E1 388). Hope that helps

I should have specified in my original post (and will edit it in shortly): This build is using 5th Ed. I don't have 6th and probably won't any time soon. -Carl-
Hyper-Man
Re: Modeling The "Killing The Assasins" Technique From ST:VI I'd just go with 2 separate attacks, one that has no range and is linked to the other. Done.

Make up the points in raw damage. Heck, it can be argued that no one outside of combat troops in ST wear any armor. Also, even a 2d6 RKA can be deadly doing a head shot (ie x5 stun x2 body). On top of the weapon being a Continuous attack and you can have a very deadly device at short range. You could also buy it as a slot in a multipower where the Attack becomes a RKA No range. Depends on the feel you are going for and how much handwaivium you want.
