  1. Re: Worst comic book superfight ever We are obviously not that cheap.
  2. Re: Worst comic book superfight ever You're right. It is stupid that Firelord was depicted destroying constructs with a single shot that it required Thor and Hercules to hit with repeated blows.
  3. Re: Worst comic book superfight ever Eh, it's Spider-Man, we should all know perfectly well he can rise up to any challenge no matter what the odds. It's what he does.
  4. Re: Worst comic book superfight ever Your argument is circular reasoning. What has been consistently portrayed about Spider-Man is going to be ignored by you because you would prefer to base your theory on what you think should be consistently portrayed for Firelord.
  5. Re: Worst comic book superfight ever No, because the reader's memories weren't erased.
  6. Re: What does a SuperTeam need? Yeah, my theory is, if a player wants a base and isn't trying to use it to have a "crystal ball" or a teleportation UAO increased range to a trap inside the base then, as long as they fully flesh it out and draw it out, I'll give them the XP for it. And rivalries have to be carefully used - they can't be the "despise each other" variety.
  7. Re: Worst comic book superfight ever Does a character's qualities have to hit everyone over the head by an official declaration in a comic book? Do we ignore what we learn about a character through actual stories because of a claim he made in a fit of anger or because of a write-up that doesn't fit what we've seen in the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe? Do we pretend that Spider-Man's consistent effectiveness against high-powered opponents isn't part of his story because the Enforcers have occasionally caused him problems when we could just as easily turn it around and pretend that Spider-Man shouldn't have had the Enforcers cause him problems? OR do we try to find a way that allows us to understand that both aspects of Spider-Man are part of continuity?
  8. Re: Worst comic book superfight ever I can see the futility but I love it. I embrace it. I want to marry Futility. But, then again, I'm fickle. I may hate futility tomorrow.
  9. Re: Worst comic book superfight ever Evidence that Firelord's defenses are higher sometimes than others would be Spidey knocking him out when, at other times, Firelord can fly through a star. See, that was easy.
  10. Re: Worst comic book superfight ever Arrogant superbeings in comics often say they will destroy this or that or somesuch when they are a rage and then they don't follow through with it, whether because their threats were insincere or they couldn't actually succeed; it's entirely in character for Firelord to say he would kill Spidey or destroy the planet to get to him and not actually try to do either. It's only natural, Firelord is full of hot air.
  11. Re: Worst comic book superfight ever Spider-Man has consistently been very effective against cosmic threats whenever the chips were down.
  12. Re: Worst comic book superfight ever For the audience, I never accused ChuckG of lying. I suggested he had built a straw man, I never presumed to establish a motive for why. Unlike ChuckG, I do not pretend to be a mind-reader. His defense of calling someone else a liar is built on as faulty a premise as his defense of not warning folks that he was going to bring up spoilers on a certain comic in the NGD thread. Stubborness should have its limits as should sheer cynicism.
  13. Re: Worst comic book superfight ever I think this is one hazard of putting someone on Ignore and calling someone a liar - you miss their retraction and their explanation. Maybe someone should tell him he ought to retract calling me a liar before someone reports him for breaking the rules... again. Is he still banned from the NGD?
  14. Re: Worst comic book superfight ever I still disagree. I think you are underestimating Spider-Man, a guy who has been in quite a few cosmic conflicts.
  15. Re: Worst comic book superfight ever Well, okay. I was misled. It's a tad harsh to accuse someone of lying don't you think? Wow, Firelord out for the count for a prolonged period of time. Didn't know Spidey had it in him.
  16. Re: Worst comic book superfight ever For all the readers. Yes, Spider beat Firelord - for a moment. It appeared in a comic book. Spidey has also caused the Stranger to throw a fit as well. Edit: I was wrong. Somehow I got it in my head from the last debate over the propriety of Spidey whipping Firelord that it was a momentary KO. - The problem with Chuck's argument is that he's not pointing out in the story that Firelord was dazed, not out for the count, and that Spider-Man was wasted. And that the cavalry showed up so that Firelord didn't continue the fight. He's built a Straw Man by ignoring the point that Spider-Man's beatdown of Firelord was momentary. - Edit: I was wrong. Somehow I got it in my head from the last debate over the propriety of Spidey whipping Firelord that it was a momentary KO.
  17. Re: Worst comic book superfight ever Oh, he got the standard introduction of a typical weighty super and then over time appeared less powerful. And, in the comics I read, Firelord changed his perspective about human beings. There's an issue of Thor I remember reading where Firelord is hanging out being treated like a god in the Arabian peninsula. He dukes it out with Thor over a misunderstanding until Thor reasons with him. Interestingly, I can't remember him taking a hit from Mjolnir. What I remember is him blocking that hammer because he didn't want to get hit by it. And Thor seemed fairly in control of the situation even though the story obviously depicted Firelord as a credible threat. Chuck's description of his introduction makes it sound like he would just wipe out Thor or Hercules with one of his firebolts if he felt like it.
  18. Re: Worst comic book superfight ever No, it's the rules of debate. I get to make my argument: That Spider-Man has consistently been shown in the comics to be able to deal with cosmic class threats. And I get to explore any intrinsic weaknesses in your argument: That we should only select certain stories and that those stories should be the ones you picked. I don't have to pretend that there isn't anything wrong with your argument from you tact of debate. I can play by both sets of rules to show that my argument works and has internal consistency and I can use your rules to show that your argument does not have internal consistency.
