I can understand the cynicism of those that turn a critical eye towards Oriental Adventures (or Kara-Tur in The Forgotten Realms), but this sort of cultural mingling is hardly unique to Asiatic cultures represented in fantasy. Al-Qadim is a mixture of Arab, Persian and even Indian elements. Dungeons & Dragons in general takes every European culture, runs them through a blender, strains out the unwanted material and then uses the resultant sociological admixture for most of their settings.
