  1. Re: 6E Rules changes confirmed so far

I'm not sure how you're defining derived, though.

I'm defining derived as the base for the characteristic is determined directly from another.

    PD=Str/5 for example.

And no, it's not Figured Characteristics or that close to them in anything but a Kind of/sort of way or anything you couldn't do in 5th. If you disliked the concept of Figured Chars then Unified Power (going by what we know now) is fine, if you like the concept of Figured Chars then it's kind of a duct tape patch that comes close but not replaces, somewhat like Comeliness and Striking Appearance.

Though there maybe more to this Limitation that makes it function more like Fig chars that we won't see until the book is released. I'll reserve final judgment until then.

  2. Re: 6E Rules changes confirmed so far

You can define anything you want to as part of a Unified Power.

So, Superiorman has "Xenonian Strength". He takes +X STR, PD, REC, and STUN as a Unified Power, with a -1/4 limit on all of them. This saves him a boatload of points; on the other hand, Drains are now much more dangerous for The Man of Next Tuesday, as a Drain against one of his Xenonian STR derived stats is a drain against all.

All right I thought there was more. That doesn't really seem to make them "Derivied". They're still paid for independently of each other from a base. You just save some point and gain the risk of losing more from negative Adjustment points. It's not really figured characteristics. I see where that works for replacing ECs in a fashion though.

    Edit: Thanks!

  3. Re: Michael's Mook-Mashing Concept

Exactly. There is no need to "siphon points away". Otherwise' date=' DNPC's and Followers would not be built "by the book" - Aunt May would have to spend 350 points plus xp.[/quote']

To be fair the old girl does seem to have allot of Body or some kind of mad Regeneration powers

She's harder to put down permanently than Dracula!

  4. Re: Just to prove I'm not a complete Comeliness Grognard

I apologize if I came off as belittling your feelings.

No problem there. I thought you'd misunderstood me.

That was certainly not my intent. 'Fear of change' was not meant to dismiss or invalidate how you feel. Change is a very real and very powerful motivator.

I also think that people that post here are invested in this game, otherwise, they would not bother to post here. Just as strongly as you feel that COM is a defining part of the Hero System, I am sure there is at least one other person, who, just as strongly feels it is not.

    Oh more than one.

Since there is still a mechanic within the game to represent how attractive a character can be, my own concerns are lessoned. In all of the games I have played in, I have been the only one to bother to put points into Comeliness. Now, when I use to play G.U.R.P.S. with a different group, there was another player that would pay to be Very Handsome. So I can see valid reasons for it to be relegated to an optional talent.

Obviously, Comeliness plays a very vibrant role in your games. I can not deny that. However, it seems it does not play such an important role in Steve's game. This should, in no way, infer that Steve is saying or even thinking you are doing it wrong. This should also not be viewed as a snap decision or just change for change's sake.

Exactly. My suggestion was to make it optional. Well explicitly optional, everything in the game already is optional. Unfortunately that's not the road taken.

My point was that during the "debates" on the issue there was a great deal of dismissal of the entire as "trivial" and I don't feel it was on either side. Trivial things don't stir up as much contention*. That's all. For example the Hex vs Meters or Seduction renamed Charm issues hasn't generated nearly any heat. I think the "Trivial" label applies more to them the Great Com Wars.

*With the caveat that geeks like to argue so the scale is somewhat different among them. :)

  5. Re: Just to prove I'm not a complete Comeliness Grognard

Resistance to change is human nature. Everyone has things they love about Hero and things they dislike. Any one person's preferences is never going to align perfectly with everyone else's. Why do you think pretty much every role playing game out there is house ruled by someone?

I know all of that just myself and others that have expressed regret of over Comeliness being dropped (and argued against in the 6th ed forums) has been pegged "resisting change because they're scared of it" or "obsessing over something minor and insignificant". I'm simply amused that for something so insignificant it seems to stir some strong feelings on both sides of the argument. Personally, I feel its removal takes some value away from the system for me and even if the rest of 6th convinces me to purchase it I'll be adding the Com char back.

  6. Re: Good night, sweet Comeliness

I will miss Comeliness, but I understand.

Well nothing say you can't still use it. Of course that only applies to your games and like minded GMs. Of course using Com or anything else is really the same way.

Incidentally, Comeliness was one of the things that finally brought me over to Hero from G.U.R.P.S. I was tired of only being Very Handsome. :D

It was a reason I picked Hero System over GURPS myself. I'm surprised this half joking thread attracted a much as attention as it did honestly. It still seems like many people care an awful lot positively or negatively about the old char.

  7. Re: Teleport redirection

I think I will override the requires a defense aspect of UAA. Zero can only effect a certain sfx of a specific and some what rare power in the setting and has to have an action ready to do so and can't do any direct harm to her target with it. Since the target has to have teleportation powers of their its uses is even more limited since even putting them in a dangerous or inconvenient position could be rectified. This might be one of those abilities tha comes up costing more than its actually worth in game.

It might get interesting when dealing with powers that have teleportation as part of their special effect. For example, Sidewinder has a Area of Effect HTH defined as her teleporting around in a small area and striking everyone in it. SFXwise Zero should be able to interfere with that ability.

  8. Re: Teleport redirection

Deserve rep for the question but I can't right now. Will use the I Owe Rep Exchange Thread and see if someone else will! :)

Anyway. The implications of this mechanically are more complicated than the power. It appears logical (in twisted superhero worlds) that if someone can teleport then that travel can be re-directed. This is another case where the mechanics bump up against SFX. If the SFX of the teleporters are different can they interfere with each other's travel?

The character can only affect Teleportation with specific special effects as a Limitation to sfx vs sfx shouldn't be a (major) issue*.

    *Hopefully

  9. Re: Super "Chi" powers?

"Faster then the Eye can See": Vanishing Teleport from Dark Champions or a less limited version that allows to seemingly "blink" from location to location assuming he could reach it normally.

Chi Awareness: The character supernatural perception of the chi flows in the area give him insights anything from Combat Sense to Dangersense to more mystic forms of perception like ESP, Aura reading and evaluating an target health and skill.

Ghost Striking: chi empowered blows that can harm ghosts and other incorporeal magical beings.

  10. Re: Blue Streak

I find it odd that stripping her makes her less distracting.

Well, sometimes the wrapping makes the gift so to speak. Partial nudity can be more alluring than total. It engages the imagination. Depends on how it's presented.

Costume aside, she might into some Endurance problems* but other than that it looks like a solid speedster.

*And characters with weakness are more interesting, IMO

  11. How would you model a character that can override another character's Power to Teleport and force them to arrive at different destination than they planned? The character must have Teleported on their own. The character can't force them to and simply teleport characters are objects as an Attack (with this power anyway).

  12. Re: 6E Rules changes confirmed so far

After much consideration I have come to a decision: decoupling Combat Value fixes more things that it breaks and is thus overall a positive most genres and not too difficult to toggle back on for those genres were it works. So I'll slid that into the positives for 6th edition, IMO. I'm still debating switching dropping figured Characteristics.

  13. Re: 6E Rules changes confirmed so far

They also make great Complementary Skills IMO.

IME, that's their primary mechanical use not the exclusive one but the most common in typical play. Its a way of "specializing". Like PS: Assassin could be complimentary to a Stealth roll in certain situations so the character is a little better at certain situational uses of broad skills.

  14. Re: Mutants and Masterminds: Iron Age Opinions?

If you like running iron age games, its not a bad buy. In particular, if you are already using Freedom City setting material, and want to touch upon the iron age, I'd say definitely buy it.

However, its not a "must have" if your interested in just the genre support, as opposed to the setting material.

( and the natural question is "If you want to use everything in the book, why not just grab M&M 2e and use it in the original system?" )

Are you asking me or just being rhetorical?
