  1. Re: "Neat" Pictures

Argh' date=' flashbacks! Around 1990 we learned that 3M Blackwatch™ tape began a self destruction process after about 3 years of age. I spent many hours running those through 9-track tape drives trying to save irreplaceable astronomical and meteorological data. And in between I'd clean the 3M Blackwatch™ residue off the tape heads with alcohol. Good times.[/quote']

We never seemed to have a problem with any particular brand of tapes in my old job -- but every night a step on our checklist was to do a thorough cleaning of the tape drives (cabinets?) with alcohol and Q-tips. Kinda felt like being made to clean the toilet with a toothbrush...

Bad tapes did crop up on occasion, but usually in the write process, and only very infrequently in a later read process. Our nightly backup job took about 20 of these tapes to complete.

  2. Re: Jokes

I think many from "our" generation (those that scored decently(?) on the above list) also remember a time before:

    Cable TV,

    Cordless phones,

    Internet or even BBS service

    Video Tapes,

    "button" telephones,

    digital clocks in the home,

And the "Paper or plastic" choice in grocery stores.

Also, how many remember going to the local hardware store or drugstore with a bag/box full to test on one of these kinds of things:

I remembered 7 on that list.

    Ditto. :(

    Should we add:

Frozen TV dinners where the 'plate' was aluminum and not plastic?

Non-digital microwave ovens (i.e., the time and power settings were done with dials)?

    Full service gas stations?

    :)

  4. Re: Playing around with the rules...

So does d8 + d10. But I've always been fine with 3d6' date=' so the point for me is moot. :P[/quote']

d8 + d10 has a "flat spot" of equal chances on the results of 9, 10, and 11. :P And I fully understand about being moot to some people.

Part of my thought process has to do with Steve Long's request for suggestions for different roll systems/mechanics in the 6E development. IIRC, and to paraphrase, he said he was curious about a system that reduced the impact that just 4 levels would make on combat and skill rolls. 11- becomes 15-, or 62.5% becomes 95.37% (or conversely, a to hit roll could go down to 7- (16.2%).

With a less steeply belled curve, those 4 levels would have less of an impact than they did before.

  5. Re: You Don't Have to be Crazy to be a Superhero, but it Helps!

Yes' date=' but when it comes to parents with mutant kids, I would expect them to either advocate on their child's behalf or the very least try to help the kid keep it under wraps so he doesn't get killed by an angry mob unless they're just stupid and have never been exposed to western civilization before. Maybe your parents were that shallow, but not everyone's are. If it's happening to kids (and when you get older everyone else is "kids", especially teenagers) most responsible adults will not advocate for the genocide of all kids with super abilities. In the marvel Universe, parents, with few exceptions treat "Mom, Dad? I'm a mutant." as being functionally equivalent to "Your whole life with me has been a lie. You thought you were raising a child to continue family name and traditions and give you grandchildren. What stands before you is an evil twin of the child you thought you were raising. All those years of love and devotion were wasted on an evil being who should never have existed. Any grandkids that result will be abominations. Stop me before I reproduce."[/quote']

You forgot the "Buahaha" at the end.
