  1. Re: Help with a power

I am working on a character that is blind and uses TK and Telepathy to see. I am not sure if just giving him a complication that he can't see nontexture things' date=' or if I should build a power with detect radar, or range touch with discriminatory to tell foes from friends.[/quote']

Not sure, but I think that Touch is not a Targeting Sense.... And at 2AM, I'll let someone else confirm/refute that. ;)

Defense is less of a viable option in a game with a d20 spread rather than a 3d6 spread: +2 DCV tends to be less useful' date=' so I imagine many players will opt for all out offense: eviscerating your opponents is the best defense. Whether or not players would actually think like that, I could not say: whatever game you are playing the trick is to damage your opponents proportional to their ability to absorb damage faster than they are doing it to you. The thing is though, no matter how much you know about statistics, the dice fall where they will.[/quote']

Thank you. This is exactly the sort of analysis/experience I was looking for when I posted my question. I hadn't considered that changing the probability distribution changes how likely someone is to get hit, and this the effectiveness of a given amount of CV and/or Skill Levels. If the cost of that isn't changed to match, it cannot help but change the "effectiveness relationship" between between CV and DEF*.

*Yeah, I know that there is no 'DEF' any more (IIRC).

  3. Re: Playing around with the rules...

Seems to me that if you want a different probability curve' date=' the easiest way to get it would be to use percentile dice and map the results onto the 3-18 range. By adjusting the upper and lower range of what went into each result, you could create whatever curve you wanted. If you wanted better resolution, you could add another d10.[/quote']

    Rolemaster, anyone?

I was thinking about the simplest possible change that would flatten the peak a bit and leave everything else the same (3-18 range, uniform shape to the distribution, and not a flat distribution). Others' MMV.

Well, there's the snotty quote from Heinlein, too:

Anyone who cannot cope with mathematics is not fully human. At best he is a tolerable subhuman who has learned to wear shoes, bathe and not make messes in the house.

My guess is that when it was inscribed, the quote about geometry at the Academy was considered snarkily rude in sort of the same way.

Well, two out of three isn't bad... Right?
