My old favorite "the MAgic Sword."

its an old school movie with stop motion special effects. Its the movie that got me to start reading fantasy fiction

Check the cheap DVD racks at dollar stores and such.

I got my copy for a dollar.

The movie is fun, but dont expect too much

  5. Re: The cranky thread

Weirdly enough, Where I live at in East Tennesseewe have reverse Skunks.

As most of you know skunks are black with white stripes...ours are reversed white with black strips. on someof the skunks, the White color is a yellowish color.

Its really weird to see them.

I am sure of course that the radiation from the labs and weapons labs have nothing to do with it....

    Stilll its freaky to see

  6. Re: Help Thag build a character:Chinese alchemest

I have a lot of the character done, I was just wanting help on his alchemy poweres, but Ill post the background and see if that helps

I would like my character to be a Chinese doctor from a world where the Boxer rebellion actually succeeded. The British aren't exactly denied access into China, but it certainly isn't possible for them to just walk around. Foreigners roaming around Capital Chinese cities, without escort, is practically unheard of....or very, very shady at the least. My characters motivation is simply to gain experience, perspective and an understanding of Western medicine and mindset. Let's face it, Chinese medicine and magic work great, but there is something to be said about morphine, penecillin and and immediate trauma/burn/critical care! Sometimes having a bottle of pececillin handy works great for folks who are suffering from a serious cold that could turn into pneumonia.

What I would like my character to be able to do:

Very experienced in Chinese medicine (herbalist, botanistist, horticulturalist, etc)

Relatively experienced in Western medicine (studied medicine at Oxford for a year)

Exceptionally well versed in Chinese Taoist Alchemian Sorcery

Exceptionally capable at Kung Fu (equivalent of Shaolin Master)

Speaks Latin, Chinese, English, French, Arabic, Korean, Japanese, Hebrew

    Special Abilities:

Martial Arts, do not force him to engage in hand to hand. He's a Shaolin Master for cryin out loud. That's not to say there aren't other better folks out there. A Jet Li style guy and he will fight for a while. A martial arts demon has an equal chance of kicking his ass in a bad way (souls are yummy).

Magic. Give him enough time and he can knock a Dragon out of the sky, but he needs time and ingredients, both of which he just may not have. He can do simple things, but they wear on his "Chi" energy. He can unlock doors, open a window, minor Jedi tricks (no he can't influence people's minds) without causing any real wear on him. He can go semi invisible and run (not walk) on water if he uses *a lot* of Chi. Problem with that is he draws a lot of attention from etheral entities. Doing aggressive acts are bad on his Chi. Being rude, shoving people, beating on a dog, all drain his Chi. Magic is good, magic is bad.

Dodge. He can dodge bullets from a 6 cyclinder pistol. But it takes a lot of Chi for him to do it and probably wouldn't do magic for a week. He would be totally defensive when he is doing this. Now he could dodge a whole sub machine gun, but it' never been tried. And if he did successfully do it, he probably wouldn't practice any magic for a month.

The downside: He is still a servant of the Imperial Chinese Court. People are after him b/c they think he is a smuggler. He's actually an agent for the gov't hunting down smugglers and such. But his identity is so secret, he can't even tell the low-mid level authorities and certainly not western authorities! He still wears the Mandarin Braid and well, he's Chinese. Young, bald except for single braid of hair.

He's a pacificst. He will never willingly attack an opponent. His martial arts are for defense. He would rather you waste all your time trying to hit him (without him hitting you back), wearing yourself out and settling scores over tea and ma-jong.

Loves to gamble. Any form of gambling is his addiction. Does smoke opium, but isn't addicted...yet. Aversion to guns. Be a man, settle it out the old fashioned way, duke it outfist to fist or drink.

Hisuse of any powerful magic draws attention. Yes, he could conceivably turn the group invisible to the house guards by making them look like bushes, but boy the magical hounds and werewolves will come running and baying right to him. magic good, magic bad.

When it's all said and done, he's human. He likes women and wine just like an other guy. He is Chinese 5' 5", 130lbs., not very impressive. He does suffer from Chinese superstition. Finally, he doesn't wear body armor. Somebody shoots him with a .45 cal bullet, he has just as good a chance of dying just like anyone else. Can he try to dodge it, yes, if it's coming from the front and he's prepared. If he gets shot in the back, well, he'll take full effect from the bullet. He can be blinded and maimed. Magic can have a greater effect on him than against other non magic people. If somebody walks up behind him and shanks him with a 8" pig sticker, he may be out of the fight, he's only human. Oh and his arch nemesis is some obscure guy named Lo Pan and his Japanese half-brother called Otoku Fugu (the Blowfish who never smiles).

Thank you for all your help

  7. I am guessing that I need to set up some sort of VPP.

but how should i actully set it up

    I am guessing

    extra time

    gestures

    incantations

    trigger

The over all character concept that my player wrote up is excellent and I want to help him out.

Also how should I use the IG/5 rule for potions and such.??

    Please help out here

    Thanks

  9. I would recomend Dennis Wheatly. A great British Horror novelest. While someof the stories were a little late to be considered pulp, He really stands up as the master of Satanic Horror

HIs books The Devil Rides out, To the Devil, a Daughter have both been made into excellent movies. Both of which are now out on DVD at Anchor Bay.

His books are a little hard to find, but worth the trouble.

Weird Tales, The Magazine That Never Dies.

As opposed to the Hero Pulps like Doc Savage and The Shadow, this book is packed with short stories and novellas, mainly of the horror and 'shudder-pulp' variety. I highly recommend it, especially if you can find it for $1.29 like I did.

I love finding books at a cheap price. It brings out the Scroge McDuck in me.

Speakingof which, Goodwills and Salvation Army stores are great places to find such older books as we are talking about.

And at usually cheap prices also.

I am also thinking of the Spider crimefighter whos adventures were reprinted a few years ago and can be cheap finds at book stores.

I would add more, but everyone else has covered this subject very well.

Thanks to everyone for adding such great links. I enjoyed them very much....What a great board this is...

  11. I agree with the other posters here.

LOM is the standard that all genre books should be held to.

I have a beat up copy of it. If there is any book that should get the PDF treatment, this one is surely it.

It does show up on ebay, but it goes for some bucks.

Ill keep an eye out for it.

Serial Movie Hero - Y'know, the old Dick Tracy and Rocketeer type serials from the 30's and 40's. A great genre to play in, a bit like pulp but not exactly.

  13. Hermanns 7th voyage of sinbad and Mysterious Island are great to adventure to.

Danny elfman's NightBreed, Darkman and BettleJuce soundtracks are wonderful for setting different moods.

Rick Wakemans Journey to the Center of the Earth is a great music to adventure to

Eric Kudzils collection of Movie themes (especally the Sci fi ones are fantasic recording of all of the SF movie themes we have come to love. Look fo them in the classical section of your record store. These soundtracks are not only well played and composed, but the sonics will make your sound system sound like a million bucks.....
