  1. Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group...

From our most recent 7th Sea game:

Vera: "So, this Montague, he must be pretty impressive if he's led such a successful invasion of Ussura, hmm?"

    TaraLeila: "Yes, he is."

Vera: "And how did he manage such a feat?"

Gabrielle (OOC): *breaks into song* "Coz... he's a Montague and he's okay, he marches all night and he sleeps all day!"

*Becky then hides as both Chris and John make ready to hit her with pillows*

Magda the gypsy fortuneteller invites the PCs one by one for a reading of the cards to "show zem ze vay". Chris, our resident Inishman who is seeking his lost love, sees that strangely enough, despite the fact that Madga has turned over something like twelve cards, there are only two cards there, each repeated six times - The Lovers, The Queen of Swords, the Lovers, the Queen of Swords, etc.

Connor: "Maybe 'tis just me, but I'm thinkin' that that's not supposed to be happenin'."

Later, when the group goes drinking and carousing with the gypsies, they introduce the group to the notion of proving your bravery by leaping over a blazing bonfire. The braver ones go first while the fire is still burning high.

Alexei decides to join the fun and backs up to take a running start at the fire. Unfortunately, he's had a few too many, and trips and falls flat on his face once he starts running.

Alexei: "I think I'll just lie here a short while and consider my circumstances."

I can't believe I had to come in to work today... there are no, repeat NO, calls in the queue this morning, and I've been here since 6am. I've taken ONE call and that was a fast question about something.

God, I hope the call center supe comes in and sends us home, we have five teams scheduled to come in besides us and we had the highest sales last week, so they said we could go home early today.

Ya-HAH! The Travises are again mobile!

We decided to take advantage of the Memorial Day sales going on and traded in the great white whale for a 2003 Hyundai Elantra (very nice, smooth ride, only thing it's missing is a CD player but we can get around that).

    The only problem?

It runs so quietly that we keep thinking the car has died (force of habit after dealing with the great white whale)!

You're giving too good of service. You need to drop your standards so you can serve more at a tolerable level. (I really wish I were kidding)

    *chuckle*

Sad but true. At least I know my supervisor is on my side, he keeps trying to find ways to help me out (he holds to the long-ignored philosophy that if a rep's numbers aren't too great but the rep is clearly working her a** off trying to help and to tell, he'll go to bat for her).

  6. Re: Character to Critique - Savage!

Interesting that he's got Luck and Unluck, I guess he could see that as "Survival of the Fittest," and well, sometimes he's just not the fittest.

To my very uneducated eye, he looks a tad unbalanced, at least in terms of power, but it is a very nifty concept and I think well done.

Maybe I missed it, but is there anything in there about the chances of him ever becoming feral? (forgetting his human self, as it were)

  7. Re: Your favorite PC vs..

    Hmmm.

    Other source...

    Three-way tie.

My character (Midnight - martial artist/mentalist) vs. the Shadow - she'd probably kick his butt (but if he goes first and starts messing with her Psych Limitations, she'd be in trouble).

Midnight vs. Ian Nottingham (with or without the Witchblade) - they have an awful lot in common, but those swords give him a major advantage.

Midnight vs. Jackie Estecado (the Darkness) - now THERE'S a battle of equals, but if he brings those guns to the fight, well, she'll just have to take them away from him.

    Marvel...

Midnight vs. Nightcrawler - gahhh, that'd get ugly from a martial arts standpoint since both can teleport and both have the invisibility thing going for them... depends on how STRONG Nightcrawler is.

    DC...

That's rough, I have a lot of characters I like. Can't pick just one.

    Champions/Hero...

Also a tough call. Tie for first place -

Midnight vs. Scorpio - he's got the edge in terms of martial arts, she's got the edge in terms of mental abilities, but it'd make for one hell of a fight.

Midnight vs. Dark Seraph - she'd lose in a heartbeat, but the sheer THRILL of it would have her going for it.

Edit: Now that I think of it, I'd pit Kakita Nasami (my L5R character) against Ian Nottingham as well (and he can even bring the Witchblade) for a knock-down, drag-out, you-blink-you-f***ing-die swordfight.

And of course, Nasami vs. the Silver Samurai would be an awesome battle.

Actually, they don't, not according to most of the New Adventures novels... they have a genetic loom that they use, as now-accepted-as-canon history has it that ever since they developed time travel, they lost the ability to reproduce normally.

Yeah, I know, there's the whole Susan's-his-granddaughter thing, but I'm not totally buying it.

"So, do you have a girlfriend?"

    "No."

    "Boyfriend?"

    "No."

    "Model railway set?"

    "Somewhere."

I have a friend who wrote a book which has a manuscript for the last couple years. It's now seeming to pick up steam though on being published. And it certainly isn't the main stream either.

Lucky friend, see if you can't get some of that luck sent my way, huh? :D

  10. Re: [Humour]SciFi TV Quotes

Before the whole "Who is the Doctor anyway?" question was raised in Season 25, the Doctor said he was the same age as the Rani and they went to school together. which implied that she, the Master and the Doctor had a significant past pre-series. There might even have been a relationship that went horribly wrong.

Then "Remembrance of the Daleks" and "Silver Nemesis" called into question the Doctor's true identity and nature, and a past connection to the Rani suddenly looked a lot less plausible.

Back in the Pertwee era, when the producers planned to introduce the Master they originally thought of making the character a woman called the Controller, but backed off when they decided that audiences would not accept that level of evil from a woman. Then Terry Nation and Jaqueline Pearce went on to specuatularly prove them wrong in Blakes 7 with Servalan, one of the most memorable (and sensual) villains in SF TV history. I still think that if they ever bring the Master back, the Master should be a woman.

I was planning just that for the "Sensei who" fanfic series, having the Doctor encounter a female Master in an alternative universe (whose Doctor has made himself the Dalek Emperor) and having her follow him into his universe. The sexual tnesion alone would be worth the price of admission.

The idea was that the Doctor, the Master, and the Rani were all in the same class at whatever passes for "University" (Romana was a younger class apparently). The Doctor was the crusader, the Master the megalomaniac, and the Rani the amoral scientist.

As for any kind of "relationship" between the Rani and the Doctor, as nifty as the idea sounds, the Time Lords are not known for that kind of relationship (unless you remember the really cool computer commercial that Tom Baker and Lalla Ward did as the Doctor and Romana, I've got it on VHS). And the idea of the Doctor being the third of the ancient Triumvirate is not impossible, not if someone as bright as the Rani decided to take advantage of his knowledge...

There are few things in life more aggravating for me than having a good idea, and having absolutely NO idea how to go about implementing it.

Anyone on here know how to write a good information-requesting letter? I wrote a draft, but have no idea if this thing will get the results I want...

  12. Re: [Humour]SciFi TV Quotes

Personally I loved the Rani as a villain. Watching her mock the whole Doctor/Master rivalry was great in "Mark of the Rani." I would really enjoyed seeing her used more often, or even better, can you imagine pitting her along with the Valeyard against the Doctor?

    *shudder*

She does get some great lines...

    (on the Master)

"He'd get dizzy trying to walk in a straight line."

Doctor: "Can't say I appreciate your taste in clothes, doesn't do a thing for you."

Rani: "Your regeneration's not too attractive either, but unlike me, you're stuck with what you've got."

And I would like to see her and McCoy as antagonists again, this time with a good script by someone like Ben Aaronovitch...

And from earlier in the episode: "Ace, give me some of that Niitro-Nine you're not carrying!"

Okay, Samuraiko's geek factor shows through here...

The "Give me some of that Nitro-Nine you're not carrying" comes from the episode "Remembrance of the Daleks," while my quote on "acceptable safety standards" is from "Battlefield."

I love Sylvester McCoy as the Doctor...

  14. Re: [Humour]SciFi TV Quotes

Some of my other favorite Doctor Who quotes that aren't on the IMDB list:

(Hugh Fitzwilliam, his mother, and Turlough are chained up in a dungeon)

Hugh: *thinking Turlough is a demon* "Can you not call on Hell?"

Turlough: "I could. But then so could you, with a better chance of success, I fancy."

Captain Cook: "Number one rule of the intergalactic explorer, Doctor. If you hear somebody talking about 'good vibes' and 'letting it all hang out,' run a mile."

The Doctor: "Suppose I refuse to go?"

    Guard: "You die."

The Doctor: "It was just a passing thought."

    Yrcanos: "You are SCUM!"

The Doctor: "No, actually I am known as the Doctor."

(on Ace's skill with building explosives and having one go off early)

    The Doctor: "Ace...?"

Ace: "I think the timer needs work."

The Doctor: "One of these days we're going to have a nice long talk about acceptable safety standards."

    (on Sharaz Jek)

    Peri: "Doctor, he's completely mad."

The Doctor: "And a raving egoist. Said my mind was nearly the equal of his. Such incredible conceit."

(on putting his foot in his mouth with Ace)

Brigadier: "Oh dear, women. Not really my strong point."

The Doctor: "Don't worry, Brigadier, people will be shooting at you soon."

Adric: "I was trying to escape!"

The Doctor: "In the TSS? You were lucky you didn't destroy the whole Kinda tribe."

Adric: "As it happens, no one was hurt..."

The Doctor: "... apart from Aris."

    Adric: "A flesh wound!"

The Doctor: "Try to understand, Adric, just because you get away with something, it doesn't justify it!"

    Adric: *sulkily* "I'm sorry."

The Doctor: "The next time you want to escape from somewhere, WALK!"

The Doctor: "What's your special gift?"

Morgana the Fortune Teller: "Fortune telling. Would you like to see the future?"

(she turns a Tarot card over, showing the Hanged Man, a card often associated with the Doctor)

The Doctor: (without turning around) "No, thank you. I've seen it."

BTW' date=' Samuraiko, meant to say sorry to hear about your troubles.[/quote']

    What trouble

Last Thursday I came down with a wicked food allergy that nearly put me in the hospital. Not fun at all... and still recovering from it four days later.

    Thanks for remembering, Zorn...

I had no idea that Hero threads show up in a Yahoo search...

Every now and again I do a search on Yahoo to make sure that no one is posting my book without permission, and to my surprise, both zazaza.net (my unofficial author page) and the Hero threads of my story are both in the listings!

    You know...

You still have that middle name...

Michelle Anahid Nersesian Travis Is Samuraiko.

    MANTIS.

    :D

Actually, no I don't. I legally changed it when I got married, so my full name is now Michelle Nersesian Travis.

But I still like the idea of MANTIS. Quite cool. :D

  18. Re: Musings on Random Musings

Alice has always been my first name, though my maiden name used to be 'Alice Nelson.' I mean, why didn't they just name me 'Vanilla' and be done with it?

So I very much appreciate my new, unique name, especially because it makes my initials ARK.

And I've learned to like my first name, too. Took a while, but once I stopped getting asked directions to Wonderland in reference to my being such a space case, I got used to it.

Until I was 28, I was Michelle Anahid Nersesian (and in typical cruel school-kid fashion, the kids immediately latched onto the fact that a girl's initials were MAN, and the jokes were off and running - the non-name related nicknames I got were even worse). Thankfully, "Michelle" never got me much grief by itself (apart from every high school teacher thinking they were being original when they'd start singing the Beatles song at the start of each year when they'd read the attendance sheet).

Now my last name is Travis (INFINITELY easier to spell than my maiden name), and my initials are now MNT. Much better.

I have told John in no uncertain terms that there are certain names no child of ours will ever be saddled with ('Randy' is the first one that comes to mind), no matter how catchy the initials or how trendy the name. Hell no.

  19. Re: A Thread for Random Musings

I conducted a bit of an experiment Thursday night - went out for dinner and got pot roast (which was excellent), but it had a bourbon reduction sauce (and I happen to be allergic to malt). Having eaten stuff like beer-battered onion rings without TOO much difficulty, I thought, "What the hell, I should be okay..." and ate most of it.

    BIG mistake.

Ended up being violently ill all night, all of the following day (missed work, and so did John, in case I had to go to the hospital, which I very nearly did), and a good part of last night.

    NEVER again.
