  1. Re: Bluffing Skill I can definately see your point, my hardwire wants to keep either option open. Which brings to mind Seduction... Seduction is just another form of Persuasion AND Bribery in my mind, if she's got something offer that you want then she can use Persuasion along with that bait to talk you into anything. Lots of gray tones here between these PRE based skills.
  2. Re: Bluffing Skill OK, here's the logic behind 'Acting'. If you don't have any idea what you are talking about, or if you are in way over your head, or if you are at the disadvantage then the Bluffing skill would be considered 'buying your BS'. If you do know what you are talking about but you don't want to give information away, you want to convince someone else you don't know what they are asking for or if you have the upper hand and wish to misdirect I would call that 'Persuasion'. So: Bluff = Acting = BS roll or Bluff = Persuasion = Misdirect roll Hope this makes sense.
  3. I've used Acting in some cases and Persuasion in others, because I think that both are complimentary to each other. Any opinions? I don't think it's worthy of a 'new' skill, but like I said if your Acting is higher then use that, if your Persuasion is higher then use that.

  6. Re: Old School Hero Newsletters Good God, you rock! You know what is the most bizarre part of this nostalgic piece? The type font used in the newsletter looks exactly the the type font used for Champions 1 ed. Props, props and more props. Thou hast been duly rep't. ...seeing Dove's name again. Oy. That reminds me, what the heck is an 'Airacobra' anyway? Was he a flying martial artist?
  7. Re: TE Champions You might have to hang on for a bit, fredrik because the good news is that there is a suppliment in the plans for next year (?) called Psychic Wars for Star Hero. Other than that, just like everything Hero, you can set the limits and the campaign rules to your liking. It's not quite 2 cents worth, but I mean well... Psychic Wars: In the near future, a few humans begin to developing strange psionic powers. Soon, a shadow war begins, as competing groups of psychics fight each other, the government, and other adversaries for power... or simply to remain free to decide their own destinies. Psychic Wars describes this evocative and dangerous campaign/setting for Star Hero, with guidelines for how psychic powers work, what sort of psychic powers characters can have, the Psychic Wars being fought under the nose of unsuspecting humanity, and how to adapt the Psychic Wars to a wide variety of settings and genres (including Champions, Dark Champions, and Fantasy Hero). Author: Allen Thomas Tentative Release Date: Early 2006

    blade runner

Re: blade runner There's no real 'high tech' in Blade Runner to justify it as 'Star Hero'... other than the Replicants (which aren't classic Automatons btw) and some subtle advanced weaponry, medical and communiations tech, it's all really just near-future with a foreign theme. Just like post-apocalypse games, there's only a theme change to the modern world. A GM doesn't really need Star Hero to go near-future when DH should do the trick. Now I am sensing that I may be missing the boat completely, but I thought I'd just chime in on the well-travelled subject. Which brings me to this question... when is CyberPunk? Is it Dark Champions, or is it Star Hero? I say that SH is overkill for CyberPunk. This is about 1 cent more than I needed to contribute, but my random thoughts couldn't be silenced. Forgive my nit-picky-ness.
  9. Re: A more realistic feel for SH Speaking of 'Realism' in SF, check out this article: http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2005-07-09-army-weapons_x.htm It's not exactly 'news' but it's nice to see that it's finally made the mainstream, and now the public at large can start thinking in that direction. I hope this isn't too off-topic. If you want to discuss, please do so under the NGD... if you dare.
  10. Re: Heroes of the Turakian Age NO! Hey, hey, hey now... please don't post a play-by-play of the FHB series. I'm going to be running it as a PBP very soon in my current game and I would appreciate it if you wouldn't post any spoilers for all of Herodom to see (or any of the 'non-spoiler' bits as long as you're at it). If you are planning on changing things a LOT then that's fine, but it would be very cold of you if you proceeded to throw the FHB material onto the boards when others have planned on running the same scenarios. C'mon, man, be cool... don't squash it for the rest of us.
  11. Re: In a Bind Now that's good stuff! Way to apply that KS: Knot-tying, ANB.
  12. Re: In a Bind Oops, mea culpa. It's for a Heroic level game (FH). My friends and I used to tie each other up to clothesline poles in our backyards for fun just to see if you could get out in fifteen minutes. Now, granted, we were only in our early teens, but there always seemed to be a way to get out with enough time... That aside, I appreciate the input. These are hemp ropes as listed in FH, so that's where I got the 2 DEF/2 BOD from. What I'm really asking is this: would knots add to BOD, DEF, both or neither? Probably DEF now that I find myself agreeing with the higher DEF/lower BOD approach listed above by Doc Democracy. Thanks guys!
  13. Hey y'all, What's the best way to simulate breaking out of ropes that were used for the ol' 'bind your hands behind a chair, bind your feet as well' tactic? Is this covered in any of the books anywhere? Since the rope that I planned on using was 2 DEF/2 BOD, I was going to treat it just like an entangle (Hands Only) and require a pure STR roll to defeat... but then I got to thinking that knots might would probably add BOD to that Entangle due to density, and in turn that might also add DEF. Would increasing the ropes to a 3 DEF/3 BOD due to the knots be out of the question? Gracias Ronaldo

Re: Fhg Ref: Fantasy Hero p. 246, second column towards the bottom. It's really just mentioned in passing and not bolded or anything, but it is listed in the FH index under "Spell (Limitation)". Don't feel bad, Steph, it's very easy to miss.
  15. Re: Autopilot How can a plane make a skill roll though? Wouldn't you have to install some kind of AI? Maybe you already thought of it and rejected it...

  17. Re: Let your geek show! (or Science for RPGs) Duly noted... Check this out: "While Hollywood filmmakers today are striving to make their movies as scientifically realistic as possible, Weinberg believes the comic books from the so-called Silver Age of comics (the late 1950s and the 1960s) were more grounded in science than most of what is being published today. "Most of the people who wrote comics back then were originally science fiction writers who knew their science and technology," he said. "Many of today's comic book writers seem to have learned their science from reading comic books and not from studying modern technology." So true... Here's the reference. It's a nice little article: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2004/11/1112_041112_incredible_superhero_science.html
  18. Re: Let your geek show! (or Science for RPGs) Relax, I'm a native Michigander! Grew up just north of Detroit and moved out here for work after college. I have a right to claim the quote... honestly, who would even say that without coming from MI? Now I just get 'Michigan, huh? Y'know I went to Detroit once but I only saw the airport..." to which my reply is, "...then you've seen the best of Detroit then." PA weather is not bad, though. Winters are relatively mild but it can get just as humid as the Great Lake State.
  19. Re: Let your geek show! (or Science for RPGs) Don't worry, this is Science we're talking about. It's like the weather in Michigan. If you don't like it, wait ten minutes... it's bound to change.
  20. This should come as interesting trivia for those of us who've played supers games... FACT: "When walking across a carpet in a room that is at 20% relative humidity, as much as 35,000 V of electrostatic potential can be generated on the surface of your body. A similar trip in a room at 80% relative humidity generates about 1,500 V of electrostatic potential." (Source: Finnigan LTQ Preinstallation Requirements Guide, p3-5) Anyone remember 'The Remnant' (or whatever his name was) from 'The Tick' cartoon? Hilarious. Build up charge, zap, get overheated, pass out. That's gotta be good for a 1/2D6 EB, Energy, Penetrating. Doesn't it?
  21. Re: Turakian Populations Well its all more out of curiosity than anything for me, I don't plan per se to run any major combats (they happen I would hesitate to run one as a table-top combat as of right now). The population info is more for how easily one could hide in the throngs, lets say, or what types of towns would be good meccas for supplies and trading. Those kinds of things. This is very valuable info, D-Man, and for this you shall be duly rep't. Thanks again.
  22. Re: Turakian Populations
  23. Re: Turakian Populations This is actually very interesting and very helpful. Let me ask a few questions. Based on what I've read (the internet is always true as you know ): Medieval London Pop. was ~20,000. I would take this to be a fairly typical Turakian Age city. Rome during the Empire Pop. was ~1,000,000 (the indigent population was ~20,000!), but during the Medieval Era was about 50,000. I would use 50,000 as a number to represent a capital (Cyradon, for example) or a large harbor city (Aarn, for example). For gradiation I could add or remove as many as 5000 people to a land-locked city, based on how far it was from the capital and add as many as 10,000 people for a popular maritime hub. Do those estimates hold up for a near-medieval setting? Thanks for you input!
  24. Re: Turakian Populations Do you want city-wide populations or military troop estimates? It's all very hand-wavy, but it was done like this in TA on purpose. I think Steve was very wise in doing it this way since it is now GM-defined... I think the rule of thumb is for there to be 1 soldier per 100 citizens. YMMV.
  25. Re: Turakian Almanac (non-official) Good point regarding permission. I'll play it safe and skip it for the public copy. Mine, however... All right, now that I have got a format Mhorecia will be next.
