  1. Re: 12 months 12 characters a Death Tribble project with the Hero Boards

I was thinking about doing something like this also. One way you can differentiate character archetypes is to mix the degree with which they blend elements. For example, blend Martial Arts and Gadgeteer. With just Martial Arts, you basically have a Dedicated Fighter, someone who Fights All The Time. Toss in some gadgets, and you might have a Ninja, someone who is a skilled fighter but has other capabilities to both complement and enhance their fighting. Swap the two in levels of importance, so that Gadgets is the primary and Martial Arts is much less, and you basically have a Spoiler character who confuses and distracts the enemy while Big Hitters on the team go after them. And with no Martial Arts you can have basically a Rear Echelon character, who seldom confronts the enemy directly.

I like psyber's points too. You could call The Patriot, The Outcast, The Innocent, etc. "Personality" or "Theme" to complement Archetype as the basic type of character, and have The Outcast Brick, The Patriotic Blaster, etc. Not every Personality might mix with every Archetype, but it makes for ways to shake yourself out of a rut if you can't think of a new character. Try making a new combination!

  2. Re: [New Product] Champions Complete

And I have Champions Complete in hardcopy. I've only had a chance to literally flip through it, but my first impression is that the layout is very clean, very nicely done; it looks better than I was expecting from the PDF. Overall it's a nice looking book and should be attractive to customers browsing through a store's shelves. Good job to everyone involved!

  3. Re: Interesting article about Sexism in Geek Communities

Not to mention that it can be plainly "not fun" to have to always play the oppressed Gender.... In an entertainment RPG environment it's best to let go of ideas of "Historical inequality" because those aren't much fun. Unless you have players who decide that they want to play in such an environment.

That's really the heart of the matter. The simulation aspect should always take aback seat IMO to the players enjpying the world thet're in and having a good time. And as youpointed out the players are exceptiomal people anyway.

There was a blog linked a while back that wrote about what was wrong with portrayals of women in video games. It made some standard points -- skimpy outfits, unrealistic hackneyed writing, etc. Stuff that I think everyone knows about. But then she wrote that she didn't like playing the female who had to prove herself in a world that doubted females could do the job. That kind of shocked me, because I figured that would be an uplifting thing for a women to do. However she went on to explain that women had to put up with that attitude all the time in real life. It wasn't fun to have to deal with those aspect of her life in a video game as well.

That article was kind of eye opening, but it also sensible and something I had never thought about that way. That's one reason I read this thread -- to gain a perspective on things I hadn't considered, and a to see common tropes in a new light. Male power fantasies involve being strong enough to hew through 30 orcs, or casting arcane spells. Female power fantasies may involve those things too, but they also involve not having to put up with the gender crap they get in real life.

It would be like making a video game about getting promoted to retail manager and fending off the IRS. That's what we do in real life, who wants to do that in a game?

  4. Re: Tiered Equipment or "How to fit Arrows and Antimarter in 60-90 AP"

Well, the point is the OP posted that was how he wanted it to work, or at least that's how the other game system he cited handled it. I agree that there might be more issue that could realistically be modeled. But there's also playability to consider, and a simple system that says "all primitive armors work this way" has advantages. Realism isn't always all it's cracked up to be.

  5. Re: Wish List: Other Licensed Content

I know this is a wish list thread, but due to a recent post on RPG.net I dug through Hero's offerings to explain what was available. There's a lot of stuff! My wish would be to advertise the genres that are already available. They are:

    1. Cyberpunk: Kazei 5

    2. Fantasy: Narosia

    3. Fantasy Victoriana: The Widen Gyre

    4. Post-Apoc: The Day After Ragnarok (I didn't even know this was available.)

    5. Modern: Monster Hunter International

    6. Whole buncha Star Hero stuff, enough where I can't really even describe it all.

Next up, some sort of cosmic level superheroes seems like low hanging fruit. But more supplements aren't going to help unless Hero Games gets better about getting the word out. I'm here all the time and I had no idea how extensive their product line for 6e really was. There's a LOT of stuff available for it right now.

  6. Re: Tiered Equipment or "How to fit Arrows and Antimarter in 60-90 AP"

Yeah, if it's rare or doesn't affect the players much, just make it a background-slash-campaign rule.

If it happens a lot (the players are a mixed band of primitive and futuristic characters, and likewise their opponents are too), then just build the weapons and armor that way.

Future armor has: 6/6 rPd/rEd, only vs. primitive weapons.

Future weapons have: Armor Piercing, only vs. primitive armor.

    Pretty much done.

  7. Re: Interesting article about Sexism in Geek Communities

maybe in the process figure out how we can reduce sexism as a problem.

I thought implied here regarding "how" was that if more people spoke up against it, there would be less of a problem. Shame and social pressure should get many of these jerks to change their behavior. Look at the link I posted above about the guy with the tumblr account; he lost his job when it was outed what he was doing.

So it's 1) raise awareness, and 2) request assistance and more participation against the jerks.

  8. Re: I need advice on mimic of a spell effect please.

All this sounds like just how the game world works.

The creation rules for magic got stripped out of 6e (well, the Independent advantage did, anyway). So you you just invent whatever you like for creating items. It's hard to make items, or easy, on the GM's whim. So the idea is to try to duplicate the feel of Skyrim, which you just do however you like.

I might use a Burnout roll. Depending on how big the battery is, you get a Burnout with a larger number. So bigger batteries give larger Burnout numbers which are easier to make. Use an item too much and it'll be used up. Probably I'd just make the roll once per combat, not per each use. Tracking End for every piece of equipment sounds like too much work. Computer games don't translate well to table top for this reason.

  9. Re: I need advice on mimic of a spell effect please.

OK, if soul stones are needed to power items, thing I think I'd play around with the item. "Requires Soul Stone of Opportunity" or something like that. Enchanted items have a "charge" that is expended (maybe a fuel charge) and Soul Stones are the fuel. Adjust the limitation of the item based on how hard it is go get the fuel.

My guess would be it's a -0 Limitation. How much of a limitation for a gasoline engine? Not much, gas is everywhere. Only if players are actually going to run out on a regular basis should there be a limitation.

  10. Re: What is Champions Beyond?

I suspect that Galactic Champions is as much "cosmic supers gaming" as Hero Games itself intends to cover for the foreseeable future. Reportedly' date=' sales of GC were respectable but not outstanding.[/quote']

Well, considering it's background material and somewhat niche at that, I'd expect it to have slower sales. There's been some discussion elsewhere about systems for cosmic supers, which is why I'm asking. It's hard to recommend Hero for a specific genre if all of the actual background material has been removed and has to be made up by the players and GM from whole cloth.

Yes, I do expect that CC sales will have to be very good before any sort of expansion is considered. I'm just tossing my two nickels out where that expansion might go.

Some of the advice on gaming high-level supers from GC made it into the 6E Champions genre book (which is NOT the same as the new Champions Complete).

All the more reason to consider reprinting those rules elsewhere, eventually. :)

FYI, here's my response to a request for additional genre books from Hero Games. You can see I f'ed-up and said Champions Beyond is a genre book, when it's not. That is what sort of started me thinking about genre books and what might round out Hero's offering a bit.

  11. Re: What is Champions Beyond?

    I don't have Champions 3000. :)

So does it cover actual rules and advice for building high powered and cosmic heroes? Is it basically a "game" of cosmically powered heroes, with allies, villains and milieu? Or is it more CU expansion, with the power levels kind of incidental.

  12. Re: [New Product] Champions Complete

OK, sorry about that. I see xPL and I think "x Public License." I thought you were talking about legal issues. Laptops (and e-readers) are cheap, but I understand that even $80 for an e-reader isn't in many folks' budgets.

I think the flash drive is a good idea, even though I fully expect the PDF to still be there when you do get a computer. Consider uploading to a free storage account like Box.com or DropBox.com. Flash drives are kinda easy to loose. As long as you have access to a given email account, you can reset a password online and still have access to any stored file. As a backup solution, I think cloud storage is currently the way to go.

  13. Re: [New Product] Champions Complete

Humm...can I download the PDF to a flash drive instead of a hard drive (the MPL frounds on people downloading stuff to there computer drives)?

It's a PDF. It's a regular file. You put it wherever you like. I have a copy of my PDFs in my Documents folder, a back up on a portable hard drive, another backup on a flash drive, and a third back up on my Box.com account.

    It's just a regular file.
