Re: A Thread for Random Musings
I hope I didn't step on any toes or feelings with my latest post in the "Libby Sentenced" thread... but given that set-up by Enforcer84, I arguably couldn't help myself...

Hmmm... psychic bodyguard to important officials, like the President... throwing themselves mentally in the way of incoming psychic attacks, much as a Secret Service agent would with a bullet...

Re: Astrophysics question
The original question gets down to the roots of (potential) CPT violation; I'll see if I can think of a way to abstract some of that down to very general terms a bit later, when I have some time and am not dog tired...

Or, alternatively:
You wind up at the hospital, instead of the show, needing a rather unusual kind of transplant, and having to explain to the medical staff how you wound up going to the wrong kind of "scalper".

Re: A Thread for Random Musings
I've got to stop listening to public radio; I keep getting the urge to... get involved. Y'know. Do stuff. Attend meetings held in a room at the local school of agriculture. That kind of stuff.
Think I'll start listening to a rock station instead. That should fix it.

Re: A Thread for Random Musings
I wonder if a doctor EVER seeing a patient on time would have an effect similar to "crossing the streams" and bringing about the end of the universe...

I have a degree in math. I am therefore obviously completely unqualified to be an accountant. Thank god.

Re: Longest Running Thread EVER
Well, the question devolves into the internal consistency of a self-referential structure. It must be considered on a case-by-case basis, unless there's a general complexity theorem which can be applied ... that's more up your alley than mine. My guess is that there'll be some cases that degenerate quickly into a lifeless condition (kind of like how the Word Dissociation game did), some that end up being "stable" in the sense of endless repetition among several reflector states (rather like Mightybec's double entendre thread), and then there's the most interesting cases which go into nondeterministic chaos. With luck we could even get one of those last with intermittent lapses into intervals of simple-looking quasiperiodic behavior, interspersed with utterly incomprehensible sudden, catastrophic evolution. The whole question is made more complex by the inherently damping influence of the moderator phenomenon, though we could add stochasticity to the whole situation by re-introducing a couple of fake lesbians.

Re: Pirates : An amusing question.
In both cases, it sounds like there's some revenge involved for the characters. And it wouldn't surprise me at all if the people they're out to get might not try to get them first. So the place becomes a deathtrap to do away with the agents and bounty hunters and what-have-you sent after them by the people they (the PCs) are out to get.
Make it LOOK like a citadel/hideout/base. Let rumor tell that it's a citadel/hideout/base. And let it draw those in the pay of your targets. The more you eliminate that way, the fewer of them you have to face later on...

Re: Longest Running Thread EVER
Act like I said something interesting.Thanks.
If it weren't for the fact the point of this thread is to be as long as possible, I'd suggest moving this to a thread of its own. After all, I'd hate to have the discussion of this particular subject be hard to follow when intermingled with other comments. But I have faith in my fellow LRTE posters. So, with that in mind:
I think Savinien has some valid points here, though as is often the case, not all of the evidence supports him and it would be equally easy to construct a counterargument that was as compelling, at least as I'm looking at it.
Frankly, I'm not sure which way I'd jump on this issue myself; I find myself thinking that I'd go first one way, then the other, as I view it from different angles.
Opinions? Thoughts? Rebuttal?

Argh! I can't believe I forgot Rocket Ship Galelio! That's my favorite Nazis-on-the-moon book of all time...

Re: Need Book Recommendations
Let me jump on the Hienlien juveniles bandwagon. In particular, I have fond memories of The Rolling Stones, Red Planet, and The Star Beast.
I'd also reccomend Islands in the Sky by Arthur C. Clarke. It's not exactly what you'd requested. But it's an excellent look at possibly real space travel and life from the viewpoint of a young man who'd never been into space before.
Andre Norton has some excellent fiction, though often times it can be a bit dark in the trials the protagonists go through, though uplifting in that they win through in the end. With that in mind, of her stuff, let me reccomend the following:
The Last Planet (or The Star Rangers as it is sometimes titled)
The Zero Stone and the sequel Uncharted Stars
Catseye
The Time Traders

Re: Inspiration: One-storey skyscraper
An interesting read and interesting concept. I did have several difficulties with the design, but they all got mentioned one way or another in the reader comments. Still... food for thought!

Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group...
"The Canadian Mafia? Are you serious? You never hear anyone say, 'Oh, no! The Canadian Mafia is after me!' What do they do? Politely ask you to come with them so they can break your legs... if it's not too much of an inconvenience?"
"You know, parents are probably going to be a bit upset if you start spitting formic acid on their children."

Re: Genre-crossover nightmares
Take them off to some island somewhere, give them the usual rules & so on... but then start having 'other contestants' vanish. And crew members. And have a radio blackout... Meanwhile film secretly as the genuine members of the public react to what appears to be a horror film scenario being done for real. Then another part of my brain started screaming "LAWSUITS LAWSUITS" and I shelved the idea. Still think it would be good fun though.
Sounds suspiciously like "Scare Tactics", which I always thought was a lawsuit waiting to happen when someone had an actual heart attack...

Sleep is obviously addictive and leads to lost productivity (after all, while you're asleep, you can't work!) So when does the "war on sleep" sponsored by the government start?

Re: "Bag of Holding"
This could be considered the classic Tardis. How I would create the Tardis would probably be something like this...Interior = Base on a different dimension. Build as base. Add mind link to call box. Add physical limitation actions affecting call box affect base in proportion.
Exterior = a vehicle with extra-dimensional movement on passengers to Interior. Vehicle has mind link to base. various movement powers available. Add physical limitation actions affecting base affect call box in proportion.
And that is pretty much how I wrote up the Tardis when I did it. I think I have the write-up somewhere on the forums...
