  1. Grabbed by TK with a wind sfx. 1) Should the combat luck apply to the squeeze damage? 2) Should it apply to other attacks while the grab is in effect, of which the grabbed character is aware? In 5e, being grabbed isn't a listed exception, but it doesn't say that the list is exhaustive. I'm inclined to think that it doesn't protect against either, but I wanted to see if there was substantial disagreement before this PC got toasted.
  2. Re: Making a master Table Booklet Here's a thread with an answer to a somewhat related question I had: http://www.herogames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=73171 You might want to post yours in the same forum. I assume they'll say much the same - it's OK to share with your group. The main issue in my case was that it was an online game. FYI, I KNOW ALMOST NOTHING ABOUT COPYRIGHTS, but I believe that it won't make a difference to copyright whether you cut and paste them or reproduce them by your own data entry (i.e., either is potentially problematic).
  3. Re: Smart weapons I've done with Summon automaton. It's way too cheap, but it's the best model, IMO. E.g., a hunter missile has flight and a one-charge, no range, AoE attack.
  4. Re: Question about Combat skill levels and damage Almost never. Personally, I have a prejudice against it because, unless I've been missing something, it balances terribly with Spread. Why does +1 DC cost -2 OCV in levels, but +1 OCV costs -1 DC in Spread? It seems to be about a 1:1 tradeoff in MAs, too. On what has become the side topic, I don't think I've ever built a Reduced END power in 5e, except possibly as part of a MP slot where DCs were an issue, so there were basically points to throw away. Even where high SPD is an issue, I've always preferred to just buy Only to Activate.
  5. Re: 5ER - specific throwing damage situation Here's the portion of the FAQ that I found interesting. The question isn't it, but the first line of the answer seems relevant. (Emphasis mine.) "Can a character Grab another character, move to build up some velocity, and then use the velocity to smash the Grabbed character into something to add velocity/5 (or the like) to STR damage? As a default rule, no, because Martial Throw damage depends on the target’s own velocity (though as UMA discusses, the relative velocity of target and attacker can also factor in). There is some provision or ability within the rules for substituting the attacking character’s velocity — such as the Passing Strike maneuver — but those are exceptions to the general rule, and shouldn’t be taken as blanket permission for any character to add his velocity damage to his attacks all the time. This definitely sounds like it will deserve some discussion in The Ultimate Speedster. ;)"
  6. Re: 5ER - specific throwing damage situation I looked through the FAQ. There's nothing right on point, but when the vel/5 is mentioned it seems that it's talking about something else. (I can't figure out what that would be - throw someone in a direction he's already moving?) I'm going with just straight STR.
  7. Re: 5ER - specific throwing damage situation Maximizing range with the die/inch tradeoff is the eventual idea, but to get there I need to know the base damage. You got was was confusing to me - there's the stuff about vel/5. Does that mean that the damage would be 12 dice plus 4 more from velocity? That's pretty nasty. I would think doing it like KB would make more sense, so it would be only 10 dice if the target lands on the ground. I would think lots of people would know the answer to this offhand, but I guess everyone's busy arguing about 6e...
  8. Re: 5ER - specific throwing damage situation Thanks. I couldn't tell from the martial throw whether it would be STR damage or one die per inch or something else.
  9. I'm really confused about throwing opponents. I'll just give the specific situation. If someone feels like explaining further, that's great, but I'd love an answer to the specific situation. - grab & throw with TK - intent of throwing the opponent as far as possible, though without the tradeoff of more distance for less damage - no physical obstacles to the throw - (no casual STR breakout) - 60 STR - target is 105 kg So... 1) 18" throw? 2) damage is...? Thanks in advance.
  10. Re: March of the Munchkin Ah. The timing didn't seem right. It seemed like a very long time in open discussions (which were far, FAR too disorganized for me to think about joining), and then surprisingly little time in writing and editing. But I wasn't paying very close attention.
  11. Re: March of the Munchkin I don't have 6e yet, and I've only glanced at a few discussions, but I keep asking myself: Why didn't Steve run a draft of the rules changes past these boards, or a select portion? I understand that there was a huge discussion of possibilities, but once the big decisions were made, why not put out a beta?
  12. Re: basic penetrating Q (5e) So, it's 1 point?
  13. 1d6 RKA, Penetrating vs. 15 Resistant DEF, not Hardened. A "3" is rolled, with a STUN multiplier of 3. The target takes 1 BODY, but does the target take 0 or 3 STUN? I think it's 0. This from the FAQ wasn't completely clear, but seems to indicated it would be 0: "If a character buys Penetrating for a Killing Attack, does it affect the STUN Multiplier or the amount of STUN damage done to/taken by the target? Ordinarily, no — roll the standard STUN Multiplier and apply the STUN damage using the normal rules for Killing Damage. However, a character could buy Penetrating for a KA and declare that it applies to the STUN damage, not the BODY damage. Presumptively, Penetrating for a KA applies to BODY damage; the character must specifically indicate to the GM that he’s buying it for a KA’s STUN instead." Thanks.
  14. Re: Collapsable weapon 5th ed I think that's pure sfx of the power activation. You can have your OAF sword teleport to your hand from Dimension X when you activate the power, if you want. The FAQ says that donning an OAF that is your costume (like armor) is not Instant Change, but power activation. Same here, it seems to me. I think someone asked Steve recently about the problem of using this with some foci - that you could keep deactivating the power to avoid losing the focus - and Steve said that was basically up to the GM to check.
  15. Re: Unworkable Premises for a Campaign
  16. Re: Sixth Edition Characters I had no idea my sister got around so much.
  17. Re: Breakout That particular illusion is really overpowered - I don't know why it's only +10. The only mentalist I've ever built was an illusionist type. I gave him invis., mental illusions, and a big PRE boost linked to shapeshift (e.g., hot babe, scary monster). Then I put him away because he was way too powerful. Mental entangle can get in that class too, depending on DC limits.
  18. Re: So many questions... Oh, yeah - I wasn't being critical of doing it w/o the summons. In fact, I'd be very skeptical about this summons as a GM.
  19. Re: So many questions... The big difference with Multipower (or any build that makes the healing, whatever, direct powers of the character) is that the character has to use his actions to heal or whatever.
  20. Re: look over my Pizza Oven I think you should try this phrase as a pick-up line.
  21. Re: Breakout I hear you. I don't know if there are good answers. But I think the issue is the overall mechanic. You might just want to mess with that. I've thought about make the rolls less effective, but more frequent. Except for AP and DC limits, I don't think the issue is that mental powers are useless, so much as all-or-nothing - they have that tipping point. Changing the fact that subsequent breakout rolls step up on the time chart would be one part of doing that. One thing I like to do is give the mentalist helpful senses, like Detect EGO. Proper choice of targets helps a lot. Anyway, for your build, as a GM I'd want to know how this made sense as a matter of effect. If it did, I'd probably be more inclined to do it the second way you said - more dice, but limited to say you can only go for EGO + x. That seems like a more defensible effect, too - say, mental illusions that can't completely alter perceptions.
  22. Re: Persistent and Uncontrolled I think I'm on the point. They only have "separate effects" if Persistent gives something Uncontrolled doesn't. I.e., the OP's question was whether you needed Persistent, and whether it adds anything.
  23. Re: So many questions... From what you described, I think you have it, with the notes that I offered before. A little more explanation on the usable by others/as attack. That advantage actually gives the power to the target - e.g., in this case, the bot would turn someone into a healer. The foci. The fact that its an automaton does not say anything about whether the summons power should have a focus. A focus on the summons means that the summoner needs that focus to summon the summoned. Re foci on the bot's powers, that's just a question of how you want to build them, in the same way you had those questions with the base character. You certainly don't have to have focus on the bot's powers.
  24. Re: So many questions... Seconded - enormously valuable to a new player.
