  1. Re: New Book: The Algernon Files I've got mine on order. Getting it from ACD this week, so I should see it Wednesday. Congrats, and very cool. I'm sure I'll gush more when I see it.
  2. Re: Ye Old "Hero is Hard" Debate Yeah. I come from just the oppostie corner. My 8 year long FH game was a transworld fantasy with characters from weak powered superheroes, the old west, cyberpunk, modern spy, Pulp, Starwars styled space opera, hard sf miliatary feel and natives. The inherent GENERICness of HERO made that work. I could just tell everyone keep the defences under 20/10r and keep the damage under 3d6 Kill, and let it go. I've played ninja hero that ended up in a pulp styled lost world with dinosaurs and old greeks, translational fantasy with only one PC who was a modern guy, a SF game with Mecha, dinos, and lasers where the PCs were a bar band, A-team style dogooders. The Strength of HERO is in that kind of style. And I'm older, and don't have as much time to learn the complete ins and outs of new systems as I did before, so I stick with HERO for single Genre games. I can understand others who do not.
  3. Re: Which comic? The San Angelo University game - Teen Titans. The Legacy Hero game - Morrison JLA crossed with the Busiek Avengers.
  4. Re: Terminal Velocity for critque and amusement. Yeah but it also the term for something falling as fast as it can. And Terminal implies death and destruction, which a teen hero would likely think is cool.
  5. Re: Terminal Velocity for critque and amusement. Yeah. The GM said basically no frameworks. He let me have the mini-EC because I saved so few points with it, and having a one slot MP is the same as one power and was oked, but as Trebuchet said, allows for easy additions of slots.
  6. This came up in a discussion of superheroes at the FLG/CS I work at. The person mentioning it was thinking more in the terms of a comic book, but I immediatly glommed onto the idea for gaming. A four person team, each member exemplifying one of the ages of comics. A golden age (Cap or Superman) A Silver age (Spidey, Flash, GL or an FF) A Bronze age (Wolvering out of the 80's maybe, or something from the Wolfman perex Titans) An Iron Age (Cable or Spawn). I immediatly chimed in that the Silver age character should be a scientific talking ape (shades of Dr Silverback) that shouts things like "Great Photons". The iron Age character was mocked and decided that the origin should be incomprehensible and involve demonic powers, big guns and weird alternate futures. Anyway I thought it was an interesting idea, and wanted to throw it out for discussion. :-)
  7. Here is Terminal Velocity, my new PC (hallalejuah I'm playing again). Some notes - the group are all characters who just got thier powers, so he is a little underpowered- this is by design. The GM borrowed 1 pt color disads from GURPS - Quirks. Helps in roleplaying. Eclipse worked in the 80's rather than the 90s so I could use them for my origin. For me, this is a first - I got some use from European Enemies. He is flirtatious, outgoing and pleasent. His hair is short, and usually in the latest style, his body is somewhat lanky, but he hasn't finished filling out yet. When "on the job" he is focused and intense, belying his easygoing manner at othertimes. His costume is a form fitting (better to show off the form) full body black bodysuit, with red footware, gloves, waistband and accents on the suit. His head is uncovered, and he wears small black and red goggles for a mask. Personality: Alistair is trying to make a name for himself as a hero. He does crave the limelight a little bit, and courts the reporters and publicity, though not overly so. He also is aware that if his background comes to light, it could cause problems for his family, and that is also some of the motivation for his actions in that regard. He sees himself as something of a career superhero, and tries to get along well with the police and other law enforcement agencies.Terminal Velocity also really enjoys being a superhero. He loves the action, he likes the spotlight, he likes the whole Good vs Evil thing. Being a superhero has turned from an idea as a youth to a hobby to a passion. He just loves everything about what he does. TV also loves to cook, and is going to school to be a chef. Quote:"Oh, lighten up"Background: Dr Force was a British superhero (telekinetic) who ended up married to his teammate Lady Pendragon (a martial artist). Their marriage fell apart after 12 years due to the actions of Shrike, a martial artists speedster, and a member of the terrorist group Eclipse. It turns out that while on the mainland Dr Force, trying to help Shrike go strait (after all, while she was a terrorist, she also hates corruption and was doing what she did from ideals) and got a little too involved. A little less than a year after that she had a son. She wanted Dr Force's help to raise him, or at least support. He wanted nothing to do with it, feeling guilt and shame for his actions, so she left it alone, and moved to the United States under an assumed identity to get away from her ex-team, and primarily to not cause the man she secretly loved any pain. However, this information was used to blackmail Dr Force by Eclipse, and in dealing with the situation, Lady Pendragon found out. This was the beginning of the end of the relationship. She took their son, and disappeared. Dr Force later was killed investigating Eurostar on a tip that one of them would be there- most of them were and he was in way over his head. It is rumored that the tip came from Lady Pendragon, and that she did it to see him killed. The son of Lady Pendragon and Dr Force became a supervillian when he turned 18. He used the name Excalibur. Shrike it turns out was a latent mutant that her serenity training had awakened, these were passed on to her son, Alistair, who when he reached the age that such things happen started displaying the same powers, as well as a variation of his fathers telekinetic powers, although Alistair's do not seem to work at range. When Alistair was 16, his mother had to go into hiding (and change her name again) because a supervillian (Excalibur) had found out who she was and was going to have her deported and tried for her crimes of two decades ago. Alistair was raised by his mother to be a hero. Her brief stint as a super-terrorist blinded by idealism made her realize how off you could be because of ideals, and so he was raised to protect innocents, to use equivalent force or less, to know right from wrong. In short what she wanted to have been, but wasn't. Alistair decided on the name Terminal Velocity (after all he is a teenager, and it sounds cool for a speedster), and decided to join the ranks of the Superheroes. His mother then told him that there was a tryout for the Champions, after the old team was dissolved, and he should go try out. Unbeknownst to Alistair there had to be a sponsor to get to the tryout, that his mother had arranged because of her contacts within the super community. Powers/Tactics: Alistair's parents were both supers and his mother was a mutant. He is what the media dubbed a "next generation mutant". He has the, seemingly, standard abilities of those- some mental resistance, some resistance to things that affect his person, long life, immunity to disease and overall physical improvement. His personal abilities are lower powered but growing. He has amazing reaction time and manual dexterity, and can run very fast. His combat awareness speed hits 35 miles an hour, his cruising speed hits near 70, and can sprint for a few seconds at a speed of 1.3 miles per second. He is training to learn how to best utilize his speed in combat. He also inherited some very basic telekinetic powers from his father. He can generate a weak force field around himself, and can create a small force bubble on his body that adds a little bit of impact when he hits things. He is also training to develop these powers, but that is slow going. As for tactics, Terminal Velocity is a teenage speedster. Her runs around and hits things as he goes by. Campaign Use: He's a PC.
  8. Re: Ye Old "Hero is Hard" Debate But if someone said "I hate homebrewed beverages, they are too sweet (or bitter)" when what they really don't like is the work involved, that would be wrong, which is how I see the "The math is too hard". The math isn't hard. The work may be more than someone wants, or feels is neccessary, to put in , but the math is easy.
  9. Re: Ye Old "Hero is Hard" Debate Good call. To extend your anology, when it comes to gaming, I have never liked any storebought pop, I always have to either brew my own, or do the fountain drink mix thing and add three or more drinks together. I can drink the Pepsi on an occasional basis, but not long term as my standard drink. A matter of personal taste.
  10. Re: Ye Old "Hero is Hard" Debate I can see what you say in your general argument there Tesuji, and agree with you that the setting material is hardcoded into whichever version of d20 you are using, so that Hawksmoor's argument is a little apples to Oranges... but to extend your analogy above to be fairly correct, the D20 core rules that you strip it down to would have to have a formalised way to make classes balanced, a structured way to build spells and assign levels to them, a formal way to figure the balance out on feats, a balanced way to build monsters (the last I know basically exists). But those things do not exist in d20, whereas in HERO you do. That, to me, is really the difference. And as someone who builds every world from the ground up from scratch no matter what system I play, HERO is a better fit for me- I'd do the same amount of mechanical work in HERO or D20. In HERO I build it using the rules, in d20 I would scour the books for the classes, feats ect that I want in my world, and then have to rebuild them to make them fit my vision. And I think that is Hawksmoor's problem (and you can correct me if I am misreading this Hawksmoor)- in d20 (especially in D&D) what you do has to fit the designers vision- it's hardcoded into the rules, whereas in HERO it just has to fit the GM's vision. And you talk to him about what is and isn't allowed, to try and get your vision playable. In d20 (D&D) you have to change the rules themselves- a different animal.
  11. Re: Lord Mhoram First issue in May. Written by Dixon. Heh.
  12. Re: Lord Mhoram Yeah. Her damage was about the same. Her CV was pretty close- higher raw dex, fewer levels; and she had better defences. And it was the prereboot KK, the classic white and yellow with the high collar version out of the mid eighties.
  13. Re: Lord Mhoram Oh and Hawksmoor, love your avatar, and location. One of the coolest moments for Blackcat (who I have as my avatar) was when in the course or play (very near the end of the campaign), I pulled out my KK coversion from 1st ed Legion books and the DC to HERO conversion in adventurers club, and realising that Cat was Val's equal.
  14. Re: Lord Mhoram I assume either my sigline or my timeline. No I don't. And I don't mention the Marvel games either.I have a smattering of MEGS DC stuff- All the legion books, the perfect bound sourcebooks for Bats, Superman, GLC, and a number of modules.... I make a distiction between original SHRP and licenced. I don't bother with the licenced, mostly because I will never use the stuff in it. I don't run in that universe, and I won't ever use the characters in my games. I considerer Liscenced SHRP to be an adjuct to the comics they are liscenced from, rather than as stand alone Role playing games. So even though I get all of the M&M I'll skip the Nocturnals. I have all of GURPS supers, I skip Hellboy. I have all of V&V so I skip DNAgents (well actually I have that one, my wife was a fan of the comic). It's also a collector thing. I can draw the line there and say "I do not get licenced SHRP" and not worry about having to track down all that stuff.... getting all that I have is expensive enough. When I start collecting things, I can get a little obsessive compulsive about it. One of the reasons I stayed far away from M:tG for so long.
  15. Re: Timeline for a new campaign for critique and evolement. Cool bit of info. I'll add that.
  16. Re: Timeline for a new campaign for critique and evolement. Some of the nifty bits of color that just having a timeline doesn't explain. Sentinal is the WW2 era Superman stand in (taken from SAS). He was the hero that _everyone_ looked up to, that took advice from. The ultimate in honesty, truthfulness and power; the perfect example of a Hero. Thus having Dr Destroyer kill him in his first appearance immediatly make Destroyer a huge threat. Some fun bits merging timelines. SAS' The Ghost Lions(the secret British superteam that was run by a lord, and used for his own personal advancement, though they didn't know that) that gave rise to Alice Queen of Hearts (one of the best villians in published superhero gaming I've ever seen) happens the same year as the problems with the new knights in the CU. Which worked when merging them.. hey the New Knights scandel hits, and in responce the guy creates the Ghost Lions. Socially I use Dr Destroyer as the unstopable menace (IE Galactus) and Kruezritter as the political machinator and villian with the huge resources (IE Dr Doom). Division 51 is the division of the US marshal's office that deals with superhuman threats. The absorbing of Primus, villifying the orignal Golden Avenger, the MRA and outcome, and the Marshall are all from an old campaign. One of the changes I'm thinking about doing is having the Gateway station explode (instead of Galatia) that starts the whole Nova phenomenon, and tying that into the Shadow masters subplot. Dunno yet.
  17. Re: Timeline for a new campaign for critique and evolement. I used a lot of the mid/late era from the CU. I use a fair amount of Golden Age from SAS and GAC. I also worked in bits from San Angelo and Freedom City. But yeah, the base was CU. I had four books open on my desk when I was creating the thing. The big gap is that I don't plan of doing much back there. The stuff I have there is for things that directly related to the current age. The whole Azor thing ties in with the Blood. And the Kings of Edom are my "metagene" or whatever marvel's equivelent is. When working on backstory and feel I had to answer the questions "Why superheroes on earth and not on many other planets?" and "Whe do all the magical and dimensional conquerers come after earth?" My answer is the King of Edom. Their power sifted into the Earth, it's surrounding areas of space and into humanity as a whole.

Native Sun is killed keeping Washington DC from becoming a nuclear fireball during these attacks. U.S. is the target, as it was the US who resisted incursions by the IST and who?s superheroes discovered the "Shadow Masters" plot. - With the death of Native Sun and the Marshals absence Watchtower disbands. 2002- Oracles of Tempest disappears. - Tempest dissolved - Blackcat and Gibralter go dimensional. 2003- Ex members (those not affliated with the "Shadow Masters") of the IST form UNITY, an independent superteam with loose ties to UNTIL, and UN sanction for superwork worldwide, and has open calls for other superheroes. - Firehawk conquers a number of Carribean islands and forms the country of Atlantia. 2004 - Galatia Satellite Explodes. VIPER fragments into a cell structure and most of what was seen from them through the 70's and 80's were individual nest leaders actions. 1970 - Averell Pendelton found Avalon Enterprise a company devoted to humanitarian research aimed at solving problems such as world hunger and pollution 1971 - New Knights of the Round Table - Rise of Thule in the North Sea - Appearance of ?new? The Kings of Edom are imprisoned within a specially constructed asteroid shell. Somewhere in between : The Farsighted one martyrs himself and the first few beings that later become known as the Starguard are born. Circa - 30,000 BC The Cataclysm. The world is reshaped. This is the result of the Kings of Edom freeing themselves from their prison. 21. I'm just about to start my new Champions game (the one GM, as opposed to the one I am playing in that led to the team name question). I've got my history in mind, and made a timeline. Now most of my players have been around while I put this thing together, and thus have heard me comment about it as I go. So I'm posting the timeline so others can look it over, people who haven't been hearing about it as it gets developed. What I am looking for in the way of responces- What seems to be missing, and what details should be added. What would you like to know more about. What strikes you as cool or fun. What strikes you as annoying. There are a lot of dropped in names for me to hang bits of histoy on, and reference to two other campaings that I incorperated into my history. I also have bits and pieces taken from at least 6 published worlds that I worked in, because I like them. The world is based on the CU in general, although I do not use thier origin for superpowers or the ebb and flow of magic.
