  1. I've been playing/ GMing the Savage Worlds Rifts Version and mostly I end up using the Super Powers Companion to make characters for Rifts, while the people I play with mostly use the Iconic Frameworks.   Rifts works really great using Savage Worlds, and we haven't had any real problems with using SPC in SW Rifts.   Haven't tried playing/ using it for a straight ahead Supers game, as I prefer the Hero System.  SPC does have some issues, such as having no Detect Weird Stuff power,  but that can be solved by looking at the basic Powers list and figuring out the costs from there.

In general Savage Worlds works really well for quite a few things,  though does have some issues, such as no Velocity Damage, say from hitting some one with a vehicle.

  2. I took a look at the build for the shield and I have to ask as far as the damage being done is:  Who are you hitting?  That's a schwack load of damage.  With the lower end of number 5 you have 67 stun being done.   That will knock out a lot of people in one hit, and Con Stunning a lot more who will be taken out in another hit or two, while they are still Con stunned from the second hit.   The Area Effect HtHA will certainly take out any thug or agent level character in the way,  and could really hurt a fair number of villain teams.

If you are creating a solo hero who could take Dr Destroyer in 4-5 Hits, then this works on an offensive level.   Not sure what the character's defenses / constitution are so I don't know how good the 14 pd/ed will be in helping him not get killed by said master villain, but over all it's fairly decent. (Not that the good Doctor would stick around to get KOed.)

The Missile Deflection /Reflection slots look good, with enough Skill bonuses to give the character a good while before his skill rolls become far too low to keep rolling to Deflect attacks.

I also like the Area Effect Sweep of the HtHA,  its a much easier way than the actual Sweep maneuver for this type of thing.  I do have to ask why there is no Ranged AoE attack, ala the bouncing shield effect, unless the AoE Sweep is actually that as well, then never mind.

On a personal note I've been reading your Task Force stories and have been really enjoying them.  I do wish your website had the character sheets attached, the links given for said sheets just lead back to the character page, unless I'm missing something.

VIPER is a big subject.  I mentioned earlier that I'd like it to look a little more like COBRA than HYDRA.  What I meant by that was to tone down its supertechnology (and I do realize that the cartoon COBRA had things like weather dominators and MASS devices).  Their weapons and equipment resemble real world guns and vehicles (much like COBRA's planes, tanks, and guns are mostly just repainted or slightly retooled real world versions).  As for what VIPER does, how it manages to build bases everywhere, and whether it has the manpower of a first world military, those are questions I haven't really grappled with.

Teleios to me has always been the villain that was truly peak human without being actually superhuman, so his stats should reflect the peak human condition in the campaign.    If I was to use Teleios and felt the need to stat him out his physical stats would be at 25, his mental stats at 25-30, his CVs at 8 or less and his Body, Stun and End at 25, 50 and 50.  These are the peak human stats for my campaigns.

Otherwise I think you are right that he is pretty much a McGuffin as far as a campaign/ adventure goes.  Teleios has done something, created some kind of monster, out of control superhuman etc and the heroes have to stop it with brute force, or figure out the weakness or introduce Chemical X into their system.  All the while Teleios (or a clone) is watching to see what happens and how the heroes deal with it, so he can better understand superhumans, what they can do and how to stop them or make them better (if he feels like it).

    Thanks!

I wonder if play by forum is a possibility.  The problem is that like most Gms, I think I'd rather play in my universe than run it. :)

There is always play on Discord, or Roll20 (and others like it) or Skype.

As for playing in  your own Universe, you just have to have other players that can GM.  Did that with a friend of mine.  We played in 2 different cities, I would GM one city and he would GM the other.

VIPER has always been an weird and interesting case of a super organization that goes from being the comic relief to 'Why haven't they taken over the world'.  I'm also going from the 5E version of things here, but as far as I can tell it hasn't changed that much.

VIPER exists in it's Entirety to make sure that the beings who Started VIPER survive the coming apocalypse.  Whether that's cause DEMON causes almost all magic to shift out of the CU, or An alien invasion or extra dimensional invasion or what have you, VIPER is there to make sure that Nama (ancient serpent/ god/ being) survives.  The origins of the Council are caught up in years/ decades/ centuries of Nama et al encouraging certain families and peoples and bloodlines to  seek them out, accumulating in the search for the Serpents Lantern, which they eventually found. The Original Council of Thirty touched the Serpent Lantern, got a nifty tattoo and a vision of the future from Nama.   Nama, and VIPER in general, must survive and Nama doesn't care how they do it.

People being people, of course, this means that there is a conspiracy of idiots and geniuses trying to gain as much of everything as they can, and taking over the world so that they can ensure the survival of the Council and Nama,  is just one of the things they keep trying.   Who knows, maybe at the heart of it all Nama has set this all up so that when the worst happens VIPER and everyone that opposes them will be the best and strongest there is, thus ensuring the survival of the Earth/ Human (Or Whatever) Race/ Nama and others like him.

They seem to be able to do this because theirs is a global conspiracy that has existed, in it's more organized state,  since the early 1950s, the Council touches many things in the world and who is to say how much of any government/ economy/ etc is directly or indirectly influenced by VIPER and the Council and they have the ultimate backing of at least 1 very old supra normal being who doesn't care how ridiculous or dangerous or successful they actually are, as long as they can prevent the coming apocalypse.

I like VIPER as it is, because it can go from goofy to deadly serious in about a half second, depending on the needs and tone of the campaign and the interaction of the PCs with the group.

YMMV of course and your version of the CU sounds interesting in general.  Love to play in it to be honest.

  6. @therealvector What kind of  costs did you apply to the SPECIAL Stats and did the characters all get 1 to start in all stats?  Looks like an interesting adaptation.

  7. Wanted Players in Edmonton:

I'm looking to put together a 2-3 person RPG group to play in 2-3 rotating campaigns. Whether you are new to the role playing scene or have been around since Chainmail evolved into D&D, I'm more than happy to consider you as a player.

I want to put together a group to meet weekly, but would consider bi weekly, on the same day, at the same time, hopefully in the same place. This of course will be subject to change on account of holidays and family type stuff that pops up every now and then.

The first 2 campaigns will be a Fantasy Campaign set in a home brew world that friends and I have been working on for almost 20 years (most likely using D&D 3.X as that is the system it was developed under) and a Superhero campaign using the 5th Edition Rules for Hero. The basis for the Superhero campaign will be chosen by the players from a set of 3 campaign ideas, which will be discussed when people start contacting me and I have an idea of how many people I actually have.

The last campaign is an Urban Fantasy that will be GMed by a friend of mine, once his newborn is old enough that he can get out of the house again, which takes place in the 1980s in a small Canadian town.

If you are interested answer in the topic or PM me here and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

Also if you have a small group that would like another GM drop me a PM and we can discuss that as well.

There is also the "Fighting Array" idea brought up in "Watchers of the Dragon" and a couple of other places as well. It uses an Aid to... Dex I believe, but only when Characters X and Y are fighting together with in a certain radius. This would work for the the Snake sisters, in this case an Aid to Mind Control. You have a certain amount when there are two of them and the max amount when there are three of them.

  9. Re: Why Your Heroes Shouldn't Kill

No mater how unlogical it sounds that batman does not kill the joker after the thousand life he destroyed - he simply does not.

I agree and I'll explain why.

I fought the Joker on the weekend and didn't kill him. I did beat the ever living crap out of him though and possibly scared him a wee little bit.

    I'll explain.

I was playing a character I haven't played in about 2 years. Bob is, freely admitted, a version of myself from an Earth that had a few mutants pop up on it, but due to outside interference those mutants would end up being taken off planet, usually extra dimensionally. I had created him because on of my friends in college was a role player who's home gaming group had created themselves and characters using the Advanced Marvel RPG (the one with FASERIP). Bob might be superpowered, but he isn't a superhero. He's a warrior.

After a series of adventures (and system changes from MRPG to Rifts to Rogue Trader, back to Rifts and eventually back to MRPG, then MURP (the Marvel no dice game, the one before the awful new one)) I have ended up falling through a dimensional vortex into a junk yard. After collecting my new equipment, which includes a Chinese Lion Head sword, some shuriken and smoke bombs, a grapple gun and some local currency, (amongst other things) I go to a nearby laundromat, connect a phone/tablet device to a local WayneTech server and find out not only am I in a DC Universe, I'm in Gotham and the Joker has escaped from Arkham about 16 days ago and has been taking hostages... mostly fire department personnel. Cue Harleen Quinnzel.

This attractive, semi ditzy, blonde wakes in and starts to deal with the laundry left in the various machines, has a bit of conversation with me about the local wild felines that seem to be following me and then goes across to the local storage business. I figure out she's probably hiding there with the Joker (and company) change into an armoured costume, complete with a mask that has a lynx like look it, and head off to the storage place. I find out I can rent a storage spot online and do so. This way I can get in with out having to wreck a whole bunch of stuff.

I make my way towards where there are a set of lights continually on (as many SOTA storage places have auto lights, you go into the area and they go on, you leave and they go off). I pass some storage lockers that have purple locks on them (with people stuck in them) and find out the door handle is electrically charged. The Joker and Harley notice this and the Joker tells Harley to get ready for company. I kick down the door, Joker commenting that it's his old pal Catman, elbow Punch, knife hand Judy and then grapple line up to where the Joker had been sitting on a throne on the side of rocket. I really didn't want to have to fight the Hyena's (named after that famous comedy duo Bill and Hillary) so I avoided them completely for a couple of turns. I punched the Joker once, he banters with me, still thinking I might be Catman. I introduce myself as Bobcat. He's wondering if I'm crazy, then tries to hit me. Misses. I punch him again and then he set off the rocket's launch sequence. He tells me to pick the rocket or him. I'm not a tech and I'm not Batman. I don't have the technical know how to get the rocket to stop. I punch him again, mostly knocking him out, and sat him on the throne. He was mostly not quite conscious, but still had the frame of mind to know this might be bad for him. My thought was if the rocket was going to go down and hurt people, we both would be along for the ride.

Harley, Punch, Judy and Bill and Hillary escape. The rocket goes up and I figure out that the throne is the escape vehicle. We come down on a parachute, roughly, and Batman luckily takes care of the rocket. I go back to the laundromat and call the cops. I then tell Joker that the only reason I didn't try and kill him from the outset, because Bob is a warrior not a superhero (yet, mostly), is because this is Batman's sandbox. If I wanted him dead I would have just used the sword. Joker is neither bullet nor blade proof. He again calls me crazy. I refer to him as Mister Kettle and then he tells me a couple of good jokes. Then the cops show up and Batman tracks me down a bit afterwards and tries to make sure that I'm not another costumed nut job. I tell him that I'm really not sure what my intentions are, aside from trying to keep my nose clean while I figure out a few things, and then he leaves. I go on to other things (things still being played out).

Bob could have easily killed the Joker. That wasn't in question. Doing that in Gotham would get Batman after Bob and Bob doesn't want to have to fight Batman. It's not that Bob might lose. It's that he might win. And defeating the Batman isn't good for Bob or Gotham or anybody really. Bob admires Batman and all he stands for. Batman not only doesn't kill because of his "Code". He doesn't kill because he believes that these people can be redeemed. Even the Joker.

Bob did tell the Joker that if he caught the Joker out of Gotham the kid gloves were off though. Being crazy in most places means you get sent to the asylum. It doesn't mean that lethal force wouldn't be used the next time they met outside Gotham.

First time in the 20ish years of playing Bob across multiple dimensions, realities and such that he's met Batman and Harley and got to fought the Joker. That was pretty cool.

  10. Re: Yellow Jacket

Just a couple of nit picks, but if he had Judo as a martial art he should also have either Martial Throw or Grappling Throw or even Takedown as a maneuver. If he has a "Not getting into/ afraid of HTH" as a Psych Lim he couldn't do part of his job as a security guard, namely putting some one in a hold and keeping him there for the cops or handcuffs. The Psych Lim effects him at all times, not just while shrunk.
