  1. Couldn't find any links to this amazing resource already on the board, so apologies if I'm duplicating:

     

    The Digital Comic Museum

     

    Tons of free, pre-1959 comics covering a wide variety of genres. None of the usual "big names," of course, but plenty of forgotten characters and authentic pulp action. A great source of images for pulp games, too. 

     

    Someone nudge me if I'm in there for more than a couple of years :D

    Or presumably if a ninja and an anti-ninja should meet there'll be an explosion and both will disappear. Do you suppose that in an alternate universe the Enterprise is powered by warp drives full of nin--- hang on, I'm getting silly again...

    Clive Cussler certainly lives within the realm of Pulp.

    Now there's a thought: Pulp as another dimension. PCs cross over into a place where everything is just more dramatic and two-fisted all of a sudden... although I suppose that Doc Sidhe already covers much of the same ground.

    Great link. I can't ever imagine such a thing being truly viable, but that never stopped the pulps :D

     

    Perhaps more easily inserted into games would be something like the Rotabuggy mentioned partway down the article, which sounds absolutely terrifying to operate! The link at the bottom of the Wikipedia page to British Experimental Aircraft is worth a look, especially if you're into flying wings and weird gliders.

    Love it! I recently ran a zombie holocaust game (where the zombies, in true Romero style, were not what it was really all about) as part of a short campaign, inspired by The Last Balloon from XTC. The party had to escort a group of children to the top of an office block from where the last airship to safety was due to leave.

    Actually, the entire campaign was based on XTC songs. It made for a very enjoyable research period :D

    Wasn't aware of that (played Feng Shui once but I've never read it) but to be honest I'd have been very, very surprised if it was a fresh pun. Far too obvious. On the other hand, my Traveller alien film director known as La Nouvelle Vargr is perhaps a pun obscure enough to be original :D

    For a while now I've been mentioning Lucha Libre Hero to my group and describing elements of films such as Los Campeones Justicieros. It seems to be working. I'm not sure whether it was the beauty pageant contestants or the super-strong wrestling midgets which finally tipped the balance, but they're more excited about playing LLH than any other Hero setting :D As it's been years since I ran a session I'm planning to spend Monday evening playing out a bit of combat with one of the players before embarking on a full adventure.

     

    Something I noticed straight away is how well Hero is suited to a setting where nuances of fighting style really matter. A little while ago I played in a Savage Worlds: Necessary Evil campaign, playing a super-intelligent orangutan called Clancy (who sounds rather more impressive after donning his armoured battlesuit and transforming into Orangutank) and was immediately struck with the problem of how to make the fact that he's an ape work in that game. Not easy. Prehensile feet, for instance, are hard to model and that limited his fighting style; not the case in Hero. I'm now building Clancy as a luchador, following the same gag that nobody realised that it was an ape in the power armour and taking it further: nobody will know that the bare-chested ginger luchador is an ape... because he's wearing a mask! If web-based translation tools haven't let me down he'll be going by the name of El Melenudo - "The Hairy One."

     

    There's every chance that the sessions will be recorded for RPGMP3.com and naturally I'll post a link if that happens.

    Reading them made me very glad that things are so much more civil and friendly over here on the Hero forum :)

    As a filler for a couple of weeks until our regular GM gets his superhero game together I'm running a brief Deadlands: Reloaded adventure, so naturally I had to head back to the DVD cabinet to rewatch my two essential Old West research models: Tombstone and Blazing Saddles :D

     

    They both still stand up rather well. Tombstone has the right feel for the sort of game we're playing and Blazing Saddles is essential viewing if you're going to catch what the players are laughing about.

     

    Charlie - They said you was hung!

    Bart - And they was right!

     

    Mind you, they're roughly equal in terms of historical accuracy, but what the heck, this is entertainment! And research... Yes, yes, research...

     

    Sadly, I can only watch films like these when my girlfriend is out for the evening. She hates westerns :(

    Yes, this thing has to be worth a bit of an intimidation bonus to some foes, at least. Probably not something to give to anyone prone to enthusiastic gesticulating while they talk, though... :eek:
