  1. Re: Moving Calender? I've got 8 months of varying length and 13 astrological signs and figured the calender moved to represent the world's journey through the Void.As the years passed different signs would be ascending or descending and would be harbingers of the times ahead.(Maybe,I'm trying to justify it to myself beyond the "I Think it's cool phase,")
  2. Re: Adventuring company name Speed-Looters Inc. In the Warhammer game I run the group became Karl's Krew. Most people assumed they named themselves after the Emporer Karl Franz. In reality Karl was the name of the little dog that followed them around.(Smartest member of the Krew actually)
  3. I've got a calender set up for my world that consists of 400 days,57 weeks, and 8 months. The extra day is the beginning of the new year/end of the old year and isn't counted. It exists but is a worldwide holiday and any births/deaths/significant events that occur on it are either counted on the day before New Years or the day after.Since I don't have Leap Year the days rotate around meaning that while New Year's is always the first day of Spring the actual month it occurs in changes slowly over time until every 400 years the days line up again. If I decided to add more holidays and keep the idea of them being outside the flow of the calender what would be the minimum amount of extra days I need to keep the moving days? I think 7 more holidays leaving me with a 392 day and 56 week year.
  4. Re: Strange Hero Concepts: Discuss Your Own! Biscuit Pete-Hit by a mystic beam of energy he can produce hot flaky buttery biscuits at will. Martina-Pete's girlfriend who was hit by the same beam and can now urinate any alcoholic beverage she has ever tasted.Works as a bartender. Embiggens-Able to double his height with a proportional increase in strength, and endurance.Unfortunately he's 3 feet tall.
  5. Re: Why hasn't magic changed the world? He was using it as a story basis. The characters eventually find out the truth about magic and must decide whether to reveal it or continue using it.I like the idea of magic costing something from the caster or the world around them as it makes the wizard think before using magic to solve everything(Like the curse of Chaos in the Warhammer setting, the spell works but mutates you or causes some other random side effect when you roll doubles.)
  6. Re: Why hasn't magic changed the world? My favorite reason ever(Thanks to Orson Scott Card's book on how to write Fantasy and Sci-Fi)is that using magic causes diseases, birth defects, and all of the "bad" things that befall humanity. So while the spell cures Farmer brown of the Green Trots,Molly across town gives birth to a baby without arms just hands attached directly to it's shoulders or Little Timmy gets crushed by a meteor because a wizard makes the crops grow bigger.
  7. Re: What if the Justice League was really a league? My world is a little more fantasy/western in those conditions.Besides the I.B.P.C,who handle emergencies and legitimate crimes you have Reiters. Reiters is a group of mercenaries who have been the I.B.P.C.'s rivals for years.Their symbol is a black horse's head in silhouette, from their beginnings as a mounted group and all their uniforms and equipment is black. They tend to take jobs based soley on profit and have been known to put operatives on every side of a conflict to try and squeeze every dime out of it. You also have the Free Companies or independent groups that work as adventurers for hire/bounty hunters/private eyes. Most of these guys specialise in one thing and tend to handle jobs that people don't want brought to the I.B.P.C.'s attention and can't afford Reiters. Example Free Companies: 1.Gun Bunnies-All female group specialising in Bodyguard, and Bounty Hunting services. 2.Manly Man's Manly Squad-Former I.B.P.C. member now running a bounty hunter team.Stars of their own reality show. 3.Bunko Squad-Specialise in Occult and supernatural cases. I'm trying to work up a background I can use to run a game and post on the boards to share with others, when I have the time.
  8. Re: What if the Justice League was really a league? This is similar to the idea I've got for my world,The I.B.P.C. The I.B.P.C.(International Bureau of Preternatural Crime) started as a League of Gentlemen style adventuring group a couple of hundred years ago.Since then they have evolved into the largest crime fighting organisation in the world. They recruit by offering people the opportunity to learn how to control their powers safely inside one of their bases. Those who show promise are allowed advanced training and offered jobs.In the olden days the I.B.P.C. kept their independence from government control by donations from the public, and accepting rewards for jobs as well as licensing out the tech they invented. In the last hundred years though they have shifted to more lucrative ventures. It started with penny dreadfuls, and mysteries but quickly adapted to new forms of entertainment as someone realised the public would pay to hear about the I.B.P.C.'s cases.Nowadays a member of a high profile team(i.e. The Majestic 12) will have a comic book, action figure, novels, and maybe even a TV show or movie deal.In fact in my world the costumed heroes with the code names are all I.B.P.C. members.
  9. Re: Few Qs about Hero and my setting In my setting for centuries people with superpowers were believed to have "Wild Magic" or been touched in some way by the supernatural. It's only in the last 100 years and the rise of genetic research that it's been revealed some of them are the result of genetic mutation or psychic ability. Oh and I've heard the Shadowrun reference before but having read a couple of the books I'm different enough to be safe. It's like their DC and I'm Marvel(Good Marvel not Clone Saga and Civil War Marvel!!!!!!!)
  10. Re: YOUR Seven great wonders of the world The Obelisk. It sits on an island in the middle of the Thornbridge river as it runs through the city of Purgatory. The Obelisk is a 200 foot tall solid black crystal on a 50 foot white stone base.It marks the largest intersection of Ley lines in the world and causes bizarre things to happen around it.Weather changes, strange glows, and spell malfunctions are just some of the cases, still most people agree if you choose to live here you have to take the chances. Hulfdar's Strike-This canyon runs from the capitol of the Dwarf homelands(Munir,in the Rockhelm mountains)across the entire continent of Iorwen from the Orillian ocean to the Mairi ocean.Legend says the Dwarven God of Battle,Hulfdar struck a great blow against the Orc God Mungul that reveberated throughout all worlds and cracked the land in half. The Dwarves believe this canyon is proof of the stories.
  11. Re: Few Qs about Hero and my setting I feel the same way about MnM,I love the source material but don't like some of the mechanics of the system.(My group feels the same)A couple of my friends are DnD fanatics and one has played some MnM games and offered to help me with the problems I have but....I hate House Ruling a system to death just so i can run it.That's why I'm looking at Hero because a friend said it reminded him of GURPS(in a GOOD WAY no insult implied)and I ran a GURPS Discworld campaign a few years ago with just the Discworld book as my only resource so I'm familiar with that system.I'm going to check out the downloads and I'll probably hang around and bother people for a while but I think HERO might be the way to go. Oh and I'm glad to see someone get the Sanpo reference in my setting they've made a ton of money supplying the various free companies and Reiters and the IBPC with equipment. The Dragon idea came from a conversation with a friend about magical creatures in the modern world.Dragons hoard wealth and the stock market and free enterprise is a lot safer than pillaging, looting and virgin stealing, especially since the invention of anti-aircraft guns.
  12. I've got an original setting I've been thinking of running a campaign through. It's one I've written several stories in(and gotten one published)so i have most of the "Fluff" figured out.My problem is I can't find a system that makes what's in my head easy to convert to a rpg.I've tried Mutants and Masterminds, but I'm not a big D20 fan and I don't like their combat system or Character Generation.I'm looking for something that doesn't require a lot of dice types(My group is used to WoD,L5R,Warhammer, and Fading Suns with a little GURPS) and doesn't bog everything down with unecessary rules for simple actions.I picked up Hero and Fantasy Hero and Champions at a game shop and flipped through them but I'm not sure.I'll post some stuff about my setting and let you guys tell me what you think and how many books I need to buy to pull it off. SETTING:Magic never died away and the world is shared by other races alongside Humanity.Technology is gaining ground and beginning to replace magic on some fronts.Wizards, for centuries the most powerful people on the planet, are competing with their most dangerous rivals ever,The Supers. In this world their are no "Super-Heroes" with secret identities who are driven to protect others from the goodness of their hearts. Most people with powers belong to one of three organizations..... 1.I.B.P.C.-The International Bureau of Preternatural Crime,An organization that operates free from governmental interference. The I.B.P.C. handles crimes and disasters that go beyond the scope of regular law enforcement or relief organizations. If a person has a flashy costume, code name and secret Identity he/she probably is an I.B.P.C. Member. They maintain their independence through marketing, and merchandising deals that bring in over 75% of their operating budget. The rest is made from contracts with the nations they operate in and scientific research . 2.Reiters-The largest mercenary organization in the world.Reiters handles the jobs the I.B.P.C. can't(or won't) touch.Their distinctive feature is their Black uniforms,cars,equipment,etc...Their symbol is a horse head silohuette. 3.Free companies-These are the individuals who strike out on their own to make a buck.If you need something done that you can't take to the I.B.P.C. for legal reasons or to Reiters because of financial ones this is where you go.Most operate independently of each other and rivalries are intense.Sample groups include:The Gun Bunnies(All Female Bodyguard),Bunko Squad(Mixed group that specialises in Magical cases) and Manly Man's Manly Men(All Male group specialising in bounty hunting and stars of their own reality T.V. show) Theres other things as well like the fact the largest manufacturer in the world(Sanpo Inc.) is owned and controlled by a Dragon, the Gnomes being the only race that can't work magic(VERY technologically advanced)and the country to the north of Ahkourlis(where the campaign takes place)being religous fanatics who want to save the world even if it means killing every non-believer to do it.I don't have time to go into it all though. So what is the minimum number of books I need to run this?
  13. Re: Super Populations and other goodness I always figure bigger populations of supers(around 1 to 1.5% of the population)but I also include many non essential things.(I.e. if you can make a dot appear on your finger at will between the hours of 2 and 4 every other thursday it's a power and you're counted.)
