  1. Re: Realism vs cynicism The world's reactions to superhumans

    I don't know.

While it is the nature of the Comic medium to exaggerate, there are a couple of things to keep in mind on this.

    • "Eat the Rich" - people in the real word do decend viciously on people they see as having advantages that they do not. This already happens with people who are more wealthy and/or famous right now - hence the quote. This is compounded by the way the Media (every hungry for a headline) will decend on a celebrity at the earliest whiff of scandal or weakness.
    • "Fear" - People can and do to stupid things when they are afraid. And, with some Superhumans they would have a right to be. A Brick with a Strength of 75, punches with the same force as a Railroad Locomotive hits a Brick Wall at 30mph. And he/she can do this with every blow.
      • And while people may be afraid, governments will be terrified by this threat to their authority (even relatively benign governments would be concerned about this kind of uncontrolled power walking about). They would typically react either to control or eliminate the threat.

So, while a lot of the "Iron Age" comics may go overboard on their reactions, I think they may still be on the right track.

  2. Re: After DEMON wins...

Black and his cohort have been using the existing mechanisms of government to administrate their world-wide rule' date=' residing, as it were, in a hideously transformed White House, now known as the Black House, a surreal and pestilent monstrosity that looks like what an executive mansion might resemble had someone only partially succeeding at magically metamorphing it into a massive slimy insect.[/quote']

Haven't Bush/Cheney already done this?

  3. Re: "Your girlfriend works for VIPER!" Huh?

Make her a Hard Luck Case.

Maybe she's got a record from something stupid in her youth, or was a wrong place/wrong time and she got stuck in a situation out of her control and paid for it, or maybe she's just reformed.

But you know... she finally got a straight job, who hired her despite that felony on her record and was making an honest go at it. Then VIPER came along, they'd already gotten a few agents in the company, and one more never hurts. Especially if they have a record and can be set up as a patsy. She was "recruited" with threats of being fired, etc, and out of desperation agreed to reluctantly work for VIPER.

So she was a criminal, and doesn't want to be one, and ended up one again. And now this boyfriend is here, things are looking up - kind of. Once/If she finds out he's a Hero you have a built in hook for him to Be A Hero, save her from VIPER and Get The Girl.

    Great plot.

This is good. And if your player is the time for complicate character driven stories, this would be perfect!

  4. Re: "Your girlfriend works for VIPER!" Huh?

Conversely' date=' if he blows her off or mistreats her (or whines about "I wouldn't have taken her as a DNPC if you were going to use it against me!") she could make for a ready-made villain (with either Rivalry or Hunted) with more than enough motivation to go after the PC if she gets a VIPER "upgrade". :D:smoke::eg:[/quote']

A player who "whines about 'I wouldn't have taken her as a DNPC if you were going to use it against me!'" needs to be playing a game other then hero.

Is that not what "Character Disadvantages" are for?

  5. Re: "Your girlfriend works for VIPER!" Huh?

It seems to me that for him to not know, she would have to have a more "behind-the-scenes" job with VIPER. I would think that it would be more difficult to keep it hidden if she were one of the basic shock troops.

It would be kind of interesting if she worked in their IT department, or developing software for their payroll system.

Depends, if he is off heroing and she hasn't figured it out then what is to say that she doesn't have a more importand and direct role in VIPER?

Hmmm . . . mayhaps she has already penitrated the hero's Secret ID . . . would also lead to some interresting story options - as well as explain why she has put up with his "strange" disappearances (i.e., when he is off crimefighting).

  6. Re: "Your girlfriend works for VIPER!" Huh?

As a GM I'm thinking of having one of my PC's girlfriends work for VIPER. He won't know about it. Is that a no-no? I mean its only fair' date=' right? She doesn't know he's a super hero, he doesn't know she belongs to a terrorist organization, right? ;)[/quote']

The moral to this story is always have your PC's girlfriend be a Superheroine! :P

  7. Re: Star Trek: Dominion War Aftermath and effects?

I think ST: DS-9 is the best in the series.

I think one of the many possible aftermath storylines they could explore are the many, many underdeveloped (storyline wise) worlds that are part of the Federation. New characters from relatively new races, that sort of thing. Perhaps, a new ship out exploring another Quadrant with the idea of looking for new friends and places to explore.

I disagree. Everything was better in "TOS"! ;)

    And, most importantly . . .

  8. Re: WWYCD: A Damsel Who Doesn't Want To Be Rescued...

Whichever character it was would think back and remember The Rape of Ms. Marvel. Then I'd walk out and find a new GM to game with.

Reading that article made my skin crawl . . .

(I get that most comic writers/artists are not feminists, but what Marvel did to Carol Danvers is offensive and it was done with the blessing of the Comics Code to boot.)

  9. Re: Your characters, favorite by Archetype

Favorites were probably Harlequin (a Cosmic character closest to the Mentalist and Mystic archetypes) and Flesh Gordon (a luck based martial brick' date=' very inefficient design but fun to play).[/quote']

If he was anything like the character from the "Flesh Gordon" movie, I'll be he was fun to play. :eg:

  10. Re: Star Frontiers

(I know, this tread is ancient, but I resurrect it nonetheless.)

Thanks for bringing back all of those old files, they're very helpful to me. Out of nostalgia I started a STAR FRONTIERS session with some players who have never heard of it. But after 2 game sessions I simply couldn't relate to that old game system so I decided to keep the setting and replace the game system with STAR HERO.

What I want to do is to update the setting (what little there is) and greatly expand it to a more modern feel (some stuff in SF is really outdated, especially the bit about computers). It will be mostly hard sf with some touches of opera thrown in.

Did anyone else took STAR FRONTIERS under his wing and maybe gave it a new lift-off with HERO?

    (Well, d20 Future did a revamp of the setting . . . )

  11. Re: Is the Fantasy Hero book still in print?

No' date=' there are no updates. When we have more information for you, we'll post it, trust me. ;)[/quote']

While a reluctance to create a new product to "answer" the new D&D edition is understandable - and probibly a good business decision. Can we at least push for a new print run for - I don't know - May 2008? :eg:

  12. Re: What a drag!

So last weekend, my poor abused archer Scarlet used her suction cup arrow (bascily a big plunger arrow on a line leading back to her - a 50 strength TK useable only to pull an object towards her) to suction cup a arch villian's mech that was about to kick in the rocket boosters and get away from the scene. The intent wasnt so much to hold it back but to get dragged along when it flew away.

But that's not really the spirit of Telekinsis, is it? Fortuatly it wasnt an issue since the flight boots were knocked out next round (and thank goodness, considering I've have no idea what to do once the mech got to wherever it was going), but for the future - I might want to sort out these little details.

Anyone got good suggestions on how to model a "being dragged behind a Rocket/speed boat/Truck full of Nazis carrying the lost ark/whathaveyou" power? A modifier to add to the TK, perhaps, that I've overlooked?

Well, while stretching would be the most correct power for this, as a GM I would have had no problem with your character being lifted and dragged along. It is certainly within the spirit of both the special effect and the genre. :)

  13. Re: Divine Portfolios Help requested.

I'm trying to come up with good skills, powers (flavor, minor, and major) for deities of various "Portfolios".

I mean that one's easy, but what about the God of Mischief? sure give him some DEX, INT, and sleight of hand, but what else?

If we work together I'm sure we can create something we can all use. Or Just me. I'm cool with that.

Well, for some realy great "portfolios" I would suggest contacting Playdiety for some back issue scrolls. :eg:

  14. Re: Who Is... Your Favorite Villain?

I am going to have to go with Black Paladin (Conquerors, Killers, and Crooks p. 126) He has the qualities to be a good leader for a team of Mystic Villians, without being overly powerful himself. :sneaky:

Also I find his backstory a good source for scenario ideas. The pathos of his own "lost love," the mythic ties to Camalot, and his anti-Christian beliefs. And, as a GM, I find Witchcraft's quote a good insiration for role-playing him.

"Maybe his evil grows, in part, from a frustrated desire to be better then the role circumstances cast him in." :eg:
