  1. Re: Musings on Random Musings

Well, I was going to be putting together a database of "standard spells" for the Guardians Universe... sort of give the magic operating there a unified feel, if nothing else. But then I realized that what with the Fantasy Hero Grimoire's 1 and 2, the USPD, and the Codex that Mr. Taylor just came out with, not only would such a work be redundant, such a work would likely get me hammered with cease and desist letters, what with there being only so many ways you can present such a database.

Sometimes its just not a good day to expand your gameworld's background...

How about getting permission to include sections of each (or the entire works) in the GGU?

Not only would it save a lot of work, but then you'd only need to add to it, should anything be lacking. Will that work?

And on a related note, just where does the history of magic use fit into the GGU? For instance, the Champions Universe had the Turakian Age, will the GGU have a set period when magic reigned and typical magical beast could be found- such as unicorns and the like? And since the reboot, when magic was added to the GGU, I am assuming that magic was there all along throughout history, not that is just suddenly appeared, right?

I only ask because it has impact on my campaign.

    Cheers,

You brought back the point chart for advantages and limitations :celebrate

When our group switched to 5th Ed, I photocopied my point charts from my 4th Ed book, placed them back to back and laminated it (plastic). This handy 'card' stays in my 5th Ed book right in the Advantages and Limitations area for quick reference. Makes a handy page marker, too.

However, since I started using Hero Designer to create my characters, my need for this card is greatly reduced. I have to admit, though, if you aren't carrying a calculator, those charts are a godsend.

  3. Re: Champions miniatures

I got some HeroClix for Christmas. Got Cap among the bundle! Hate the paint job. Stripped him and redid him -- right.

    Enjoy!

PS: I noticed something while painting him... I don't know who does the models for HeroClix, but the guy's got a serious lip fetish. I noticed it while painting my Cheshire Cat (using a Hydra guy's head), but it didn't occur to me that this might be endemic. Look at the size of Cap's lips! It's freaky! He's got that bee-stung, Alicia Silverstone look goin' on. Wierd.

I'm not fond of that miniature, but you did a great job painting it. ;)

  4. Re: The cranky thread

Glad to hear the problem is (partially) fixed.

Yeah. My brother paid for the alternator, so I only need to pay him back. But it's Xmas, and he has way more relatives than I do* to buy presents for, so I want to pay him back ASAP.

*In case you were wondering how this works, he's my half brother AND he's married so he's got family all around, where as I only have two brothers, a sis in law and a daughter to buy for. IFand when I get around to my Xmas shopping.

    :nonp:

  5. Re: A Thread for Random Musings

Tooling around the NGD threads in order to calm down for this morning's important job interview is not working. I'm actually more uptight after looking around here, especially at one particularly upsetting thread.

    I should know better.

  6. Re: DNPC: My Cat

    A cat?

    A pet?

As GM, I wouldn't allow it unless the PC in question had a vested interest in the animal- like if the PC is a druid, witch or wizard and the cat is the familiar. Or if the PC is a cat-person dedicated to saving all cats. Or if the cat is very special (i.e. can communicate or has other special abilities). But if the animal is merely a pet, I think that is a bit of stinky cheese, too smelly to stomach.

I prefer the Psyhch Lim option. It's the same points as the dependant, but it's still up to the GM to decide if that is worth any points. IMO, "Protective of Family" is a 0 pt Disad, because everyone is protective of their family. It's a given and not worth much.

  7. Re: Unstoppable

As a rule, I agree. But sometimes SFX (ye grande olde trumpe carde) would warrant that a movement power can help you break out of an entangle. If you are stick in a goo-blob entangle your jet pack flight may help you to bust on out.

If it was bought as an EB... yes. IMO, using a movement power to cause damage (or as an attack power), SFX or no, would be cheesy and borderline cheating. I'd rule against it on principle, as a GM.

  8. Re: I don't think I can move

Even further' date=' you probably didn't even need to build the entangle with Affects Desolidified to get the desired affect.[/quote']

I didn't build the character. Arcanna was one of Etherio's PCs. Check out post #2450 in the Superhero Images thread. (on page 49 for me, but I have my page preference set to 50 posts per page, so it might not be the same page for you).

Etherio posted the character somewhere around here and I borrowed it (with his permission). She has been a pain in my hero group's collective asses ever since.

    :D What fun!

  9. Re: I don't think I can move

I had a situation in a game, recently, when a speedster PC was mentally entangled (by Arcana's Ghost-Chains: an Entangle BOECV, Affect Desolids).

Shortly after being entangled thus, the player wanted to use his PC's Desolid power to escape and I told him he couldn't, based on the SFX of the Desolid (he vibrated his body so fast that he became Desolid). If it were a non-physical power, trigger by mental thought, like if it were spirit or wind SFX, I may have ruled otherwise. Regardless, the Entangle was legally bought to Affect Desolid, so the PC would still have been entangled.

But this brought up a point in the game where SFX comes into play and can sometimes trump the rules. I'd like to hear some comments, yay or nay, on my GM ruling. Was I wrong or right?

  10. Re: If Champions didn't exist...

Same as I use now: GURPS. Of course' date=' if Champions didn't exist then GURPS probably wouldn't be recognizable. They do owe (and acknowledge) a big debt to HERO.[/quote']

Yuppers. With each new edition, GURPS is looking closer and closer to the Hero System Rules. I wouldn't be surprised if DOJ filed a lawsuit in the near future.

  11. Re: Unstoppable

    Not even those pesky entangles!

Except that, I think, you have to break out of an entangle before you can use a movement power. Geez, now I gotta look it up. :nonp:

EDIT: Ok, Under Tunneling (FReD, page 155, right column, second paragraph, first sentence):

"A character trapped in an Entangle cannot use Tunneling to escape from it."

  12. Re: Tales of the Common People

Wasn't there a series of graphic novels that were about superheroes seen through the eyes of the common man? I can't recall the title (I keep thinking "Gods & something or other), but I think it was published by DC, because I remember that Superman was one of the heroes.
