Longest Running Thread EVER

Re: Longest Running Thread EVER

I spent too much time this weekend listening to revolting disgusting noises sitting on the pot fighting nasty diarrhea. And I am about to go home and go back to bed to continue said battle.

Incidentally, you get some rather bizarre items on the top page when you google for "swallow metabolism", like I did while trying to cobble up a good physics way to estimate the airspeed of an unladen swallow.

Re: Longest Running Thread EVER

It took less time to assess what people had done than I anticiplated, because most lab groups did their analysis in teams so they did the same things. So in a sense, most of the time I was grading two or three students' work at the same time.

I look forward to the day that the US finally moves to the metric system. It's sad really because it is taught throughout elementary school, but the commercial US refuses to adopt it as the standard, so it is easily forgotten.

I have a pair of digital wall clocks that includes a thermometer settable to either Fahrenheit or Celsius. In an attempt to migrate myself a little closer to metric I have one thermometer on each scale, though I do keep them in different rooms.

Re: Longest Running Thread EVER

I lived in Europe enough as a kid that for weights, lengths, standard volumes, and temperatures, I'm bilingual in terms of metric and USer units. I have never had a feel for what an acre or a hectare is, so that doesn't matter. And pressure units are so bizarre that for technological things involving pressures I have to convert back and forth no matter what.

Of course, you have to take what I say with a grain of salt because (being an astronomer) I'm pretty laid back about accuracy in conversions. As my undergrad mentor said, "We don't care about factors of ten as long as they aren't in the exponent."
