RE: Silence

"It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt."

"Silence is the only successful substitute for intelligence."

"The wise speak because they have something to say. Fools speak because they have to say something."

And from George Will, "Never miss a good chance to shut up."

--

And corollary to the second statement, "Intelligence is a lot like money. The less you talk about it, the more people tend to believe you have."

@Pariah re Boston.

Boston in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is potentially a little problematic for a couple of reasons.

1) Boston is not really a band in the sense that people think of a band. It's basically guitarist, engineer, and multi-instrumentalist Tom Scholz and vocalist Brad Delp, with whatever session musicians they could wrangle at the time. Boston's first album is basically just Scholz and Delp (and really only Delp because Scholz is an average vocalist at best); Scholz only recruited a band after signing with a record label and being told that union rules required him to have one.

2) Boston's albums were released in 1976, 1978, 1986, 1994, 2002, and 2013. That's six albums in just over 35 years. The first album is rightly esteemed one of the best rock albums of the 70s; the second is pretty solid as well. The third, fourth, and fifth albums were decent, but the less said about the sixth album, the better. Infrequent releases and inconsistent quality of music do not a Hall of Fame band make.

3) Tom Scholz is apparently not well liked in the music industry. He is fiercely independent, which is good in terms of making music that you want to make. But he burned a lot of bridges along the way.

Having said all that, Tom Scholz is probably a viable HoF candidate for his songwriting, his guitar work, and his contributions in recording technology. An MIT graduate in electrical engineering, Scholz invented most of the equipment responsible for the Boston sound.
