sinanju
Re: Force fields in reality? I remember being a kid of about 10 and thinking that when the year 2000 rolled around, I would be a) living in The FUTURE (that glorious future described in all the science fiction I read) and an old man of 41. Now I'm an old man of 46, and I AM living in the future! It's not the future I expected (there are still no practical flying cars or orbital habitats, dammit!), but it's weirder and more amazing than I imagined. Jhamin
Re: Force fields in reality? Now I'm an old man of 46' date=' and I AM living in the future! It's not the future I expected (there are still no practical flying cars or orbital habitats, dammit!), but it's weirder and more amazing than I imagined.[/quote'] Ya know, I sometimes muse that if a modern person got sucked back into 1950 with only the things on them, they probably wouldn't disappoint futurists all that much. Lets go with a typical buisneess man. - They would have a PDA that could out-compute anything in existance by a thousand times, play music (MP3s), and have pics of their families. - A laptop would be even more amazing. - If old enough they may have bionic implants in the form of Knee or Hip replacements that restore 90% of a person's mobility. - Their car may not fly, but if new it will likely get 25-30 MPG and may even run on Corn (Flex-Fuel cars) or be largely electric (If a Hybrid). It would be made largely of plastic and be computer controlled. - The people of the '50s would have to take their word for it without the towers, but a Cell phone the size of a cigarette lighter allows them to call anywhere in the world, from anywhere. - Close examination of their eyes might reaveal laser surgery that permanently removes the need for glasses. - Examination of their wallet would reveal that cash may not have been replaced, but is being rapidly replaced with "Credits" in the form of Debit-Cards.
