Hex map for a railyard

Recommended Posts

My players have just tracked down a rogue government black op to their secret base, which is a freight container that can easily be stacked and moved with other containers on a cargo ship or a train. Last session was cliffhung with the players discovering that this mobile base is currently at the railyard near the docks in Hudson City, and that they have to move fast to get there to track down the shadow operatives before they disappear again. I expect mass violence to ensue.

Does anyone have a good hex map of a rail yard that I can shamelessly rip off?

If nothing else, you might be able to get any number of railyard maps from model railroad enthusiast sites. Those won't come with hexgrid on them, but they serve as source material, at least ... and they should have a solid scale on them.

I'd point you to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michigan_Central_Station

This place is the perfect supervillain location in a city which shares much with Hudson City (at least in spirit).

Follow the google map link at the bottom.

Use http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/ to print to png or jpg, or do a print screen.

Overlay a hex grid - done (as described here: http://www.herogames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45864&highlight=hex+pattern+gimp)

Or were you looking for rail cars and such? If so, try searching google for major rail yards and apply the same process.

Here's 30th St. Station in Phili: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=l&hl=en&q=rail+station+&near=Philadelphia,+PA&ie=UTF8&z=17&ll=39.959721,-75.184851&spn=0.006299,0.010042&t=k&om=1

MS live site has even more amazing imagery: http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&cp=qnt6mk8r12yd&style=o&lvl=1&tilt=-90&dir=0&alt=-1000&scene=1917099&sp=Point.qns6my8r179b_3001%20Market%20St%2c%20Philadelphia%2c%20PA%2019104-2800%2c%20United%20States___

I thought this was particularly a nice shot (see attached).

Many thanks (and rep) for the helpful links.

Thanks to those of you who suggested STAST, but I'm specifically looking for a railyard, not a subway station (though I'd love to see the black ops type try to "jump the turnstile" with a freight container base in tow...)

Re: Hex map for a railyard

How much time before your next game session? I used to work in a railyard; I could probably whip up a quick sketch of the general layout of one which would pass muster with the typical gamer (if not a railroad employee).

Hehheh... the game is tonight at 7pm EST. Hooray Procrastination!

I do have access to Internet at work though. If you can't do it by then though, don't worry- I was going to improvise a drawing. It only occured to me to ask the board earlier yesterday.

Either way, thanks for the generous offer.

I'd like to see that.
I'll see what I can come up with, although if you want to do one of your great re-renderings to Hero scale afterwards that'd be really cool. I think it might be useful in a number of genres.

Probably take me a week or so since it's not high on the priority list.

The problem isn't the drawing, I can do that easily, it is getting the proper proportions and whatnot. That can be devilishly hard to do wth any verisimilitude. Which is why I like it when folks with real-life experience chip in here.

No problem, I am a busy bee this time of the year myself.

There's no time pressure for this, though I'd still like it for future reference.

The session went very well. The players arrived and used a mindscan to find a captured NPC. The blackops team had a psychic around too, and tried to take out the PC telepath, but ended up giving away his location. The rest of the team descended on the rail car as it was rolling out, and a good chunk of the combat was on the roof of the train itself.

In the end, the day was saved, and the black ops team are in police custody, waiting for their black ops lawyers (my PCs are crimefighters, not vigilantes...)
