Build your own amalgam superhuman

Recommended Posts

Inspired by reading the Kid Amazo TPB...

You, one of the current top-notch geneticist or alchemist genius supervillains of your universe, have currently managed to put your greedy paws on biological samples from some among the top-echelon most-powerful superhumans of your world, and you have the knowledge to combine them into the genetic or alchemical template for a one-man-team uberpowerful superhuman that will be raised to be the first in an army of invincible warriors to conquer all you survey (yeah, we all know how it typically ends, rebellious children and all, but it worked for the Skrulls... somehow).

Only being a modern sensible supergenius, you have some reasonable constraints to your work: only superhumans with innate powers that have a conceivable genetic-biological basis can give valid samples for your amalgam superhuman, it is a living humanoid, not a robot or cyborg, the abilities of gadgeteers, magicians, skill- or artifact-based characters cannot be duplicated (except for super-skills and magical powers that are based on biology, not learned knowledge), and no more than five higher-level heavyweight/powerhouses superhumans can be combined in your template (optionally, you can add a sixth sample too if the only abilities it brings are some exceptional skills or smarts).

Being mindful of the classics and the need for covering the bases for your own concepts, you ensure that at least one brick, one energy projector, and one flyer are included in your template, and that at least two choices among a shapeshifter, a speedster, a telekinetic, a matter manipulator, or an energy/force constructs creator are included too. Similar or identical powers may coexist but due to power-source constraints for your creature they do not stack, so that the being is only as strong as the strongest "donor" in your template, and so on.

You have the choice of picking your samples from heroes or from villains, only heroes being typically team players, you are restricted to choose superheroes that are or have once been allies or associates, whereas villains have no such restriction.

Your feat somehow ends up being a high-probability event in the multiverse, so it gets duplicated many times in different timelines and parellel universes, and multiple template for amalgam superhumans from several different arrays of superhumans and superheroic teams from several iconic universes with metahumans get built.

Pick your builds and enjoy.

Re: Build your own amalgam superhuman

OK, let's see:

Strength/Flight/Invulnerability: Superman

Telepathy/Invisiblity/Shape-Changing: Martian Manhunter

Energy Blasts/Constructs: Green Lantern

Super Speed: The Flash

Energy Blasts: The Ray (yes, he was in the JLA)

Whoa. Looks like I've just built Amazo. Would have mixed up Marvel and DC characters, but OP said any heroes had to have teamed together before, so... JLA it is.

Energy Blasts/Constructs: Green Lantern

Well, artifact-based characters are specifically disallowed, since it would be really too unplausible to copy their powers on a genetic basis. Therefore classic ring-bearing green-lanterns would be out, except for those who have managed to fully internalize green energy powers. Jade would be a good substitute (she was a JLA reserve). Alternatively, Captain Atom or Firestom.

Whoa. Looks like I've just built Amazo.

Kid Amazo, as a matter of fact, but a much more plausible one. None of that "crossbreeding robot parts with human ova" silliness.

Would have mixed up Marvel and DC characters, but OP said any heroes had to have teamed together before, so... JLA it is.

Well, if you really wish to mix Marvel and DC characters, JLA and Avengers teamed-up during their crossover miniseries, you can use them, although it's rather of a stretch, and the concept was rather more of a modernized genetic-based junior "pick your choice" Super-Skrull or Amazo. Anyway, there are many others DC and especially Marvel superteams, with ever-changing plentiful roosters to pick from: the Teen Titans, the Avengers, the X-Men...

And villains do not have to belong in the same team, anyway. E.g. Count Nefaria, which belongs to this kind of concept somehow, was built out of three unaffiliated supervillains.

Re: Build your own amalgam superhuman

DC's Tangent comics have been re-released as graphic novels recently, so I give you --

Brick: one of the "Sea Devils"

Energy Projector: The Atom

Flight: Captain Comet

Shapeshifter: Wildcat

Force Constructs: The Flash

Only thing to decide on now is a name. Probably "Grundy", since I haven't seen him in the Tangent comics yet. Perhaps "Boy Wonder", if it winds up being a teen-ager.

Re: Build your own amalgam superhuman

Professor X's mental might, Magneto's mastery of forces, Colossus's strength and durability, Nightcrawler's teleportation (on the off-chance you can't just overpower anything), and, say... might as well give 'em Wolvie's regeneration, just as a failsafe, but it's gonna be pretty hard to put up a fight with what you've already got.

I'd have said the Juggernaut, only he got his powers from an artifact, or Rogue, except her innate power is really more problematic than useful.

Or you could just go the easy route and use the JLA, but that's already been done. Or the FF, but... again, already done. The Avengers don't really have any of the really flexible and high-magnitude internal powersets that the X-folk have, other than Thor... in which case, you just get Thor with the ability to shrink and turn green.

Well, the X-Men have just the opposite problem than the JLA, in that they have plenty of high-end energy/matter manipulators, telekinetics, and mentalists, but just one or two powerful bricks, so the same one or two guys must perforce end up in pretty much every "donor" set.

OTOH, if you add any of the Omega-level mutants to the mix, well, they are explicitly told to have the genetic potential for essential godlike omnipotence.

I'd have said the Juggernaut, only he got his powers from an artifact, or Rogue, except her innate power is really more problematic than useful.

Indeed.

Well, it's questionable whether Thor's powerset would be accessible to genetic copying (although, there's the infamous Civil War precedent), and whether this would give his full powerst or just a high-end brick. In the latter case, it's not really worth the effort, since the Avengers have no lack of high-end bricks whose abilities could be copied all the more easily: Wonder-Man, She-Hulk, Warbird. Moreover, throw in some of their equally high-end energy projectors: Photon, Firestar, Jack of Hearts, the aforementioned Warbird, and you will equal the essential Thor powerset. Or, if you really wish to be nasty, jusrt add Sentry (all warranties about the sanity of your amalgam superhuman go out the window if you do, however). Then add Scarlet Witch for another really-flexible, high-magnitude innate powerset.

Therefore, my essential Avengers "donor" pickup:

She-Hulk or Wonder-Man: Strength, invulnerability, heaing factor (She-Hulk) or flight and energy form (Wonder Man)

Warbird: flight, strength, energy absorption/projection, speed, durability (she's a kind of Jane of all trades: maybe not the strongest choice ever for any of her abilities, except energy absorption, but a nice second-tier high-level hybrid powerhouse in a lot of fields)

Photon or Jack of Hearts or Firestar or Justice: flight, energy projection, energy form (Photon) or absorption (Jack of Hearts) or telekinesis (Justice)

Scarlet Witch: innate magic, chaos/entropy/probability manipulation

For the fifth man or woman, well, there's a nice roost of possible choices:

Wolverine: dexterity, super-tough bone claws, healing factor

Wasp: growing/shrinking

Quicksilver: super-speed

Cap. America or Tigra: dexterity

The only area where Avengers have always been rather short (like the FF) is mentalism. OTOH, Scarlet Witch's powers can usually cover some ground in that area.

As the sixth man talent-only option, one could throw in Tony Stark, for sheer brains. Or Henry Pym, who is less of a talented all-round genious, but may add growth and shrinking. Or Hank McCoy, for dexterity and brains.

Re: Build your own amalgam superhuman

Marvel Femme Fatalle, because packaging is everything. All are linked directly or indirectly to Miss Marvel:

Miss Marvel

Powers: Superhuman strength, endurance, formidable resistance to physical injury, the ability to fly, energy absorption (including sound waves), energy projection, and a limited precognitive "seventh sense".

Spider Woman

Powers: In addition to strength, stamina, agility, and speed she's able to fire bioelectric "venom blasts", can wall walk, is immune to poison and radiation, and generates pheromones that attract men and repel women.

Mistique

Powers: The classic powers set as seen in the movies.

Arachne

Powers: Superhuman strength, speed, stamina, agility, and reflexes, and the ability to cling to vertical surfaces. Can create webs of psionic energy and has enhanced senses especially touch/vibration.

Emma Frost (almost missed this one, associated through X-Men)

Powers: Just the telepathy please, that's enough don't you think?

What you get is a super strong, flying energy projector (EB and Entangle) with extraordinary senses, wall walking she's never going to have to use, and shape changing and telepathic powers. In addition you'd NEVER get the drop on her, and even without the pheromones and shape changing she's going to be turning any het male into a slobbering wreck. All of the characters are government agents, spies, or manipulators.

Re: Build your own amalgam superhuman

The DC Femme Fatalle (Can't include wonder woman cause she's all magical and stuff, and hawkgirl's powers are all from nth metal) It's actually a fairly limited field if you set those restrictions in place...

Power Girl

Powers: As portrayed in the comics she's been all over the map. Assume the version that just has the weaker versions of the strength, speed, toughness, and flight, but also none of the vulnerabilities and isn't as boring as someone who's actually godlike in power.

Black Canary

Powers: Sonic Scream and superlative martial artist, assume a natural skill based on the fact that she's one of the very best in the DC universe.

Crimson Fox

Powers: Pheromones again, and enhanced agility, speed, and senses.

Vixen

Powers: The power to tap into the morphogenic field is innate, the totem portrayed in animated JLA just helps her control it. Essentially she's got strength, agility, claws, and enhanced senses.

I dunno, I'm missing a bunch I guess, but most of the gals on the DC side get their powers from magic, training, or technology.

Looks quite nice as character idea, only I'm not that much persuaded about the value of adding Arachne, either from the iconic, power-level, or "babe" factor, so I would substitute her with either

She-Hulk (long-term Avengers companions, both government agents)

Powers: very high-level strength, stamina, durability, and healing factor

or

Marvel Girl (exploiting the X-Men connection)

Powers: telepathy and telekinesis, genetic potential to link with the Phoenix force.

Or better yet, drop both Emma Frost and Arachne, and add both Jennifer Walters and Rachel Summers to the mix. Rachel may not yet be as gorgeous as her mother, but if it is true that you can tell the daughter by looking at the mother, she will eventually be as babelicious as Jean Grey or Emma Frost, and she's potentially more powerful than Emma.

It's necessary to make the amalgam character not too unplausible in character: making genetic engineering tricks on alien or mutant biological samples is one thing, cloning gods or magical beings is another affair altogether. I would avoid making recourse to excessive amounts of rubber science, as the "born cyborg" Kid Amazo.

My own suggestions for the DC Femme Fatale:

Power Girl

Powers: Kryptonian power set

Miss Martian

Powers: Martian power set

Starfire

Powers: Flying brick, energy projection, linguistic assimilation.

Jade

Powers: Green energy constructs.

Vixen

Powers: Animal powers mimicry.

I dunno, I'm missing a bunch I guess, but most of the gals on the DC side get their powers from magic, training, or technology.

I guess this comes from the different historic roots of the DC universe. Marvel universe first developed the concept of mutants, blessed Stan Lee's soul, so many more of their luminaries have innate powers.

Not if you're Tony Stark ;)

For the good that it brought to him (cfr. the beating within an inch of his life that he took from an outraged Thor, one of the most satisfying comic book issues to read in my entire life :D). Anyway, the most Tony & Reed could pull from that was a high-end brick, the Thunder powers and Mjolnir were lost on them, and had to be duplicated by technological means (not to mention the Odinforce, the mastery of the Runes, or the Earth powers). That's precisely what I would wish to avoid with this character concept. No cybernetics or robotics (except maybe for being a nano-based self-repairing T-1000-like construct which flawlessly mimics life), no maintainance whatsoever, and not too much rubber science.

I wish for a purely biological (or possibly, nano-based) amalgam that can allow for storylines like it is ready to use 100% of its power without further technological assistance the moment it awakens from its vat, or it can be dropped to be raised as a seemingly normal kid in an unsuspecting normal family (either adopted or by implanting the embryo during fertlity treatments).
