I think I took my wording from an encyclopedia article on electro-sensing in skates and rays. I figured strong fields (like what you'd get around a power line) would be so instense they'd effectively blind the sense. (And for this character it was assumed that she'd have to be intentionally using it, though of course one could add a broader Sense adder so it would work automatically.)

Wasn't there a Mythbusters episode about this?

I heard and saw for certain that a simple Strong Magnet does not work as Shark deterent.

The first time I heard of the ampullae/electrolocation was in a dokumentation about shark/human realations. There was the idea to create a "Shark Fence": Just placing electrodes that create the right magnetic field and sharks don't want to cross the line. In the same time it is no problem for most other fishes. Or just having one of these things as shark-defense.

The Idea is to create magnetic fields that sharks really don't like. No idea what came out of it.
