Tjack
I was watching Terminator 2 on cable and had noticed something. The answer might have been in the original version of the film and just been edited out but... in the first film Reese says that only flesh & blood can go thru the time jump. That’s why you have to go though naked. The T1 could do it since his metal and electronics were wrapped in flesh. So how did the other all metal Terminators do it? I know this group could come up I with a dozen ways to get around this, but I’m wondering if it was ever explained in the films.
wcw43921
The only Terminator movies I've seen are the original and Terminator 2: Judgement Day, so I can't speak to the others. As for T2, it wasn't explained in the movie how the T-1000 advanced prototype could travel through time, but being made of "an advanced polyalloy" one could surmise that it could mimic living flesh closely enough that it was able to generate the necessary displacement field. Hope that helps.
Starlord
There's a scene in T1 where Reese explains to the Dr that living tissue creates a field that allows the travel. This explains the T-800. The T-1000 is technically not metal. It may be able to mimic flesh and bone thus enabling the time travel.
mojo_bones
This is exactly the reason I dislike T2. Well that and the fact in T1 Reese explains EXACTLY WHY NO ONE ELSE CAN EVER TIME TRAVEL AGAIN!! But the movie did too well so they had to make it a franchise. Old Man
Supposedly Cameron explains in the DVD commentary that the T1000 was sent back in a live flesh cocoon (eeew). That doesn’t fix the next plot hole, though, which is why not also send some advanced weaponry back too?

That's from Reese's point of view, though. John Connor likely told him that they were going to destroy the time displacement portal so nothing else could come through--or return. Connor may have had reason to change his mind after sending Reese through, like discovering that the portal had been used more than once. 10 hours ago, Old Man said: Supposedly Cameron explains in the DVD commentary that the T1000 was sent back in a live flesh cocoon (eeew). It could be that Skynet calculated that the T-1000 was all the advanced weaponry that was needed for the mission. After all, the T-1000 was capable of assuming any shape or form, and could shape its hands into edged/pointed weapons. The target likely would not be aware of the threat until it was too late--which is what happened with John's foster father and that one "lucky" security guard. Again, hope that helps. It still seems a bit like bringing a knife to a gunfight when you could have brought a nuke. Movie would have been a lot less interesting though.
