  1. Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group...

Played in a 'space marine' type game where the assault shuttles were all named after the last recorded words of previous crews. So we had shuttles named...

AS What the hell was that?

AS Why are you taking cover?

    AS They won't shoot.

    AS I've lost a wing!

AS Turn off the stealth field.

    AS Aw crap

AS Where did all these dang Arachnids come from?

One Sunday morning' date=' after an SCA event down in North Carolina, we visited a Shoney's for breakfast. The lady at the front asked how many of us there were, and the leader of our party—who's from Vancouver—just sort of stared at her, obviously not understanding her accent and diction. I ended up being a translator between Southern and Canadian.[/quote']

During one of my overseas trips, I had to translate between a British Customs Agent and a denizen of inner city Chicago. I got a laugh when I told the agent "I speak American. It can be mistaken for English by the inexperienced."

Many years ago I was working at a fast-food restaurant in Montreal, when a tall middle-aged gentleman in a Stetson (obvious tourist) came up to me to ask, "'Scuse me, do you speak American?"

My innate manners curbed me from replying, "Well hell yeah, boy, what'cha wanna know?"

There is a Korean-American comedian from Knoxville Tennesee who tells the story of his first visit to Souel, Korea.

While seated on the bus, a (caucasian) American tourist walked up to him and asked...

    "Is-a this-ee the bus-ee to Souel-ee?"

He answered, in his best Southern accent

    "I reckon so, ma'am."

My tastes run more toward Italian opera. But it's not really that hard to understand. Love always plays a major role in the story; it's how the composer presents it. Verdi makes it tragic. Mozart prefers to have a bit of fun instead. And Wagner kills off all the players before anyone reaches orgasm.

Better before than during, I suppose.

New Topic: How many Hero gamers does it take to change a light bulb!

    All of them.

One to create a power to change a light ball.

Several hundred to claim he got the endurance cost wrong.

Several hundred to claim it's unbalancing.

And one to design a more efficient version of the original power.

    And repeat.

  6. Re: Humanoids not in charge?

This was three decades ago, so I don't remember the name of the game. It was a science-fictiony 'space opera' type, where some 300 years ago the Terran Empire tried to conquer the galaxy and failed. Then, 200 years ago, the suvivors tried again and failed. Earth was hit with a planet buster, the only surviving humans were from six 'seperatist' colonies that weren't part of the Terren Empire. The 'Pan Sentient Federation' didn't allow any of the six surviving worlds to have spacecraft or WMD, but recruited from them for assault troops/marines. Seems that most of the federation remembers how humans almost conquered the universe (twice) and will often surrender rather than face human marines.

So, the players are marines with non-human officers, serving a non-human Federation as soldiers.

Damned if I can remember the name of the system.

    Overheard at work...

"Any landing you can walk away from is a good landing. A landing where you can use the helicopter again is a great landing. A landing where the maintanence chief doesn't threaten to kill you slowly is a fantastic landing."

"Don't tell me his ancestry, tell me what he did wrong."
