  1. Re: Wunderwaffen!!! - Secret German Warmachines of WW 2

here is a little on the movie from netflix

    Doomsday Gun (1994)

This docudrama tells the story of Dr. Gerald Bull (Frank Langella), a brilliant weapons manufacturer who was assassinated before he could deliver the ultimate missile -- a "Doomsday Gun" -- to Saddam Hussein. The Iraqi dictator wanted the missile for use in his war with Iran, but both the American and Israeli Secret Service saw to eliminate the potential threat posed by Saddam acquiring such a weapon. Alan Arkin and Kevin Spacey co-star.

Starring: Tony Goldwyn, Frank Langella, More

    Director: Robert Young

Not rated. This movie has not been rated by the MPAA.

    Genre: Drama

    Format: Widescreen, More

    Language: English

    Subtitles: English, More

    More Movie Details

There is a movie about Dr. Bull starring Frank Langella (I think). Alexandra Vandernoot (Tessa from Highlander: The Series) had a minor role.
  2. Re: Pirate Weapons?

    Other pirate weapons

belaying pin:used to make ropes fast(tied off)will also work as light clubs and they will be all over the place on the main deck you shouldn't have to walk more than 5 steps to find 1

fid(a wooden spike with a knob in the end)it is used to work large pieces of rope(works as a stilleto or club)the 3 I just had made are 16" long and made of very hard woods(ligum vitea and purple heart these woods are so dense that they don't float

monkey's fist a wieght in a fancy 6 sided knot can be used as a flail and can be made by a good knot tyer with out any tools in about 20 min

  3. Re: Space combat: how big is an inch, how long is a turn?

the question is how slow the weapon has to be to deliver enough energy on to the target

target has 1 mw second defence(just using a number)it will sustain no damage under this threshold

beam weapon that generates 100mw per second and can sustain that beam for 2 seconds(then the next set of capacitors kick in and 1 second reaquire fire cycle)(3 seconds total)

    or just make the continous

your computer taking data from your sensors should be able to generate and envelope that the target will be in

the question is how fast a nuetation(the pattern your beam is going to make inside the envelope)

this assumes fighting ranges under 1/2 light second and moving at no more than 0.1c(just my estimates)

using the above 1 weapon will not cover that whole area unless there is very little vector change

How much vector change can the target make at .1c

you need to define what the target can do

Ok, as I said after reading your first post, the issue is not point-source. It's apparent size of target. At 30 yards I am still a huge target for you by comparison. For a plane that is on order of 10 yds long (give or take) even at a kilometer you're talking 100 plane lengths which is a small number by comparison to the scales we're talking about. Specifically it covers 3 degrees or more of angle. Further, the reason that 5 bullets is enough to destroy the plane has far more to do with aerodynamics than anything else (change the airflow over the surface and it will make it difficult or impossible for the plane to fly and make it very likely that they would disintegrate). Remember that the space shuttle was fine in space and tore itself to pieces on re-entry.

A destroyer class vessel 100 m long at a distance of 60 km is, by comparison, 6 times smaller or half a degree on the sky. That's why I used the example of a dime on the other side of the room. Take it a step further and make it a 10m long fighter-class vessel and you won't even be able to see it with the naked eye.

The math is simple. You can easily figure out what is comparable and do some tests. If I were standing 30 yards from you, you could hit me with a hose probably. By comparison, the scale under discussion is if I were standing just over a kilometer away. More power to you.

  4. Re: Space combat: how big is an inch, how long is a turn?

    as I posted earlier

you can go to a beam that lasts how ever long a phase is for the craft in question(spd 4=3seconds)

why are you stuck that your weapon has to be a point or single pulse type of attack

even modern aircraft use multiple rounds in their cannon attacks and only a small percetage will hit the target(5 rnds out of 50 is more than enough to disable or destroy any aircraft

if you where running around and I had a high pressure water hose I could easily hit you with a 3 second burst so long as you where in range of it while even having a good chance of dodging the water balloon you might throw at me

you are also not going to shoot in a few plane lengths more like hundreds of yrds to maybe a kilometer or 2 at 400 mph for something from today

strafing is for hitting non or barely moving target(from the planes point of view)

  5. Re: Space combat: how big is an inch, how long is a turn?

    continous beam weapons

    or a beam that lasts 2 to 4 seconsds(speeds 3-6)

with that length of time how much of an arc could you swing the weapon

modern jet fighters(F-14,15,16,18) all have a gun sight mode that projects a line that a 1 second burst will cover

If the target is touched by the line then some bullets will hit it( at 3000 rnd per min that is a burst of 50 rnds but it might only be hit by 5 rnds

your working on the assumtion that all the energy will hit the target and will be needed to damage it

where a beam weapon may be x100s as powerful but usually hits with only 1percent of the beam (effectively the same damage)

so you have the limitation of full phase to use a weapon

in 3 seconds(spd 4)you could have a beam weapon do a outward sprial(closing ot chasing target or a zig-zag w for a crossing target wWwWwW that creates line of death that the fighter's HUD creates

Simple answer to why you don't fire at long ranges.

In space there is no ability to predict where something will be a few seconds later unless you enforce some pretty strict limits on inertial motion. This goes back to the question I posted in the prior thread... Where can you provide thrust from? Do you have steering jets? Do you allow complete reversal of thrust from the main engines?

The simplest answer is to calculate flight time of the projectile, then calculate the acceleration potential of the target over that time and create a sphere of that size and say "the target could be anywhere in this sphere depending on his heading and acceleration".

If you're talking a ship that is 100 yds long and accelerates at 3Gs which is 60 kms (chosen to simplify the math) away and you fire a bullet at it at 3000 m/s (again, using typical muzzle velocity from a modern rifle). Then your projectile is travelling in a straight line for 20 seconds. Assuming that the target registers that you fired 10 seconds later and can then fire full thrust in any direction, it will travel 1/2*a*t^2 yds off of it's current path (i.e. where you aimed). At 3Gs that's 1/2 * 32 yds/s/s * 10s^2 = 1600 yds. In other words, your target can have travelled 16 times his own length in half the time it takes your projectile to get there.

Even if you up your projectile speed to incredible levels (say a rail gun provides 10,000 m/s velocity instead of 3000). You still get a travel-time to target of 6 seconds. How much of that are you going to allow your target to be thrusting to get off your line of fire? And can he use full thrust or not?

Heck, he doesn't even have to turn, all he has to do is turn his engines on or off at will and you cannot predict where he will be with the accuracy needed.

Laser weapons work better because they travel at c which means no time for the target to react and a direct hit on a target at up to 300,000 kilometers away in a second. Of course, pointing then becomes an issue. At 60 kilometers, a ship 100 meters in length presents a target of less than 1/10th of a degree which means that you need some pretty amazing targetting systems (not to find the line, but to swing a gun to that line and stop it exactly on that line). Put it this way, we can point telescopes with that kind of accuracy but it takes us a few minutes to line them up. Also, if you have any motion relative to one another, your target is only good for the fraction of a second that it takes you to move 100 meters relative to him, then your angle is wrong again.

There's a reason that early in the Russian space program they fired a rocket at the moon and were ecstatic that they actually hit it. And that is a target that you can pretty much predict won't change course.

  6. Re: Iraq Hero

it would be more just putting in the net and scooping out all the little fish since there are really only a very few big fish

but when you can't go for the head taking away the arms and legs might do the job also

if you want to go the find weakness route

1 extra time is free to get bonuses

only out of combat(0 dcv throught

extra time (raise the base time of find weakness to 1 turn)

    prep time(need x-rays,sonograms,etc...

    RSR super hero/villan knowledge

    RSR alien/mutant physiology

penatration with AP to clear hardened on scapel(special made tools, hard to replace foci)

  9. Re: War of the Worlds

for me it was they have been here before and left their war machines herewhich would mean that they would have encountered our dieases before

    and countered them

and they didn't take into account that some might mutate over time

you would think that some of the warmachines would have been found over the years being buried maybe 200 feet underground

the war machines being bio mechanical was cool and could have been the reason for the end of the dinosaurs

the alien hopes that an intelegent life form will dominate the planet and mine it's resources(mostly metals)making for easier pickens

of course we are now talking about a culture that is millions of years old

and they stagnate for that long

  10. Re: Actung! Panzer!

HEAT rounds have a copper liner in them that when moving (at about 25k fps)the armor is more akin to water and is pushed out of the way

also 1 of the lovely properties of du is that it does not mushroom upon striking the armor like steel

it fractures still leaving a sharp point to apply the remaining energy so the cavity created is smaller so less energy is needed to penatrate through a given distance of armor

well, technically, even a STR 48 brick could "stop" an m1 tank, just by pushing their STR and flipping it over ;) (a STR 40 brick might even be able to lift off the turret with pushing).

But a STR 75 brick(c.16 MJ of potential energy--1 Megajoule in a straight punch) is probably the lowest threshold for even denting tank armor.

I think sabot rounds should still qualify as physical attacks, though HEAT rounds definitely seem like an energy attack to me.

  11. Re: Actung! Panzer!

if you are thinking of thew added skirts on a panzer IV H

it would be added armor only vs shape charge weapons ie(bazooka's,panzerfausts, panzersheriks,& recoiless rifles etc)

these are weapons that rely on the shaped explosive warhead to penatrate the armor as opposed to the kenitic energy poisoning generated by the volocity of the shell

the skirts predetonate the shape charge so that the real armor is beyond the focus of the jet created by the shape charge so the damage is spread over a larger area of the armor

sorry the wargaming geek got ou

I was thinking that the best way to do it is to reduce the armor DEF versus modern guns. Sort of like how you can have ancient armor have 0 DEF versus guns and the like. Another is to give WWII tanks AP rounds' date=' and no Hardended DEF (although the shields they put on some Panzers may count), while modern tanks get Hardended DEF versus these sorts of attacks. The problem is that HERO doesn't quite allow for this sort of breakdown of attacks and the like. GURPS does, but then GURPS has things like 10d6x100 attacks...[/quote']
