  1. Re: Gravity is gone? It starting to sound like you could have more luck tampering with one of the other fundamental forces. Ten seconds without the strong force would probably eliminate all evidence of your terrible crime.
  2. Re: Ridiculous things in comics that you don't mind. Getting back to the topic, I like how heroes can always find some crime as it's taking place. How hard would it be to spot a mugger in a crowd while swinging along at 60mph while you're four stories up? Especially if you're Batman and don't have any super senses to tell you that someone is in trouble. I love how heroes constantly use tracking devices to follow villains, but only the Green Goblin thought to use one on a hero. I love how heroes never apply their superscience in benign ways. C'mon Tony Stark, you invented a miniaturized powerplant for your armour but never thought that it might have some other applications in the world? Like maybe a CAR? Or when obvious solutions get ignored because they lead to bad implications. Honestly, how many phone calls would it take for Barbara Gordon to find someone in the DC universe who could heal her spinal damage? It doesn't bother me because I really don't want to see Zatanna show up every time someone gets a hangnail
  3. Re: Best SuperHero Fights ever X-Men and the Hellfire Club vs Nimrod from #209 or thereabouts. Just a great battle and the fight had so many ramifications. While I'm on the subject, the battles between the X-Men and the Marauders were all pretty great. It's not often in a book that they fight bad guys who are better than they are. JLA vs Jimmy Olsen from JLA: The Nail. Man, talk about going down the wrong path... New Mutants vs Magus Orion vs Kalibak JSA vs the Ultra-Humanite The Escapist vs Lady Escapist: The Iron Chain's cruellest trap! Dr. Strange vs D'spayre Those are the ones that leap to mind right now
  4. Re: Champs Worldwide: Whaddya want? How about a team of adventurers who explore the submerged ruins of Atlantis? Not necessarily a high powered team, but someone who could come in and aid the PCs whenever they seem to have an underwater adventure. "Don't worry, I know just who to call." How about an alien robot frozen a thousand feet beneath the Antarctic ice waiting ever waiting for someone to thaw the ice and set it free? How about an advance scout of an alien culture slowly working to prepare the way for the conquest of Earth? Someone who considers subtlety a deadlier weapon than any power. Someone who manages to manipulate all the heroes best efforts to his own benefit. How about Jim Clancy, The Toughest Cabbie in the Entire World?
  5. Re: If Champions didn't exist... Marvel Super Heroes. It did in a rules light way what HERO does in a detailed fashion. I still feel quite fond of the ol' girl and I certainly can't see myself getting rid of my books anytime soon

    The Plunge

The owner of Ye Local Game Shoppe has asked me if I would want to run a Champions game for their Saturday game night and I'm actually thinking of saying yes. Now since there's a fairly good chance we could get a decent group together at the shop I only have two issues left to resolve. 1-Chances are none of them have played HERO before 2-I've never played HERO before I figure you have to start somewhere and it's not like I have any shortage of gaming experience (21 years and counting), so I'm not worried about the common GM's mistakes or anything like that. What sorts of pitfalls can I expect to fall into that might not be immediately obvious to someone who hasn't done this before? I plan to use pre-gen characters since I don't want to try to explain the system and make characters all in one night. So how about it? Help me avoid disaster!
  7. Re: Iyo: The Most Underrated Or Underused Character In Comics Ghost Rider-I think they kind of got off on the wrong tack with this guy. To me the soul of the character was that he was a guy possessed by a demon. Every night was a fight for control, one that he couldn't afford to lose. The bike, the hellfire, that's all secondary. The real battle is going on inside. The New Gods-I guess nobody but Jack Kirby could dream big enough to make these characters work. These are characters that should be handled like a Wagnerian opera, not like conventional heroes. The end will come in Armaghetto... The Marvel Family-You know, it must kind of bug Superman to know that there's someone out there who has all of his powers only better and no weaknesses. And a couple friends who also have all of his powers only better with no weaknesses. And they're all really likable. Franklin Richards-You know, for 30-some odd years they teased that he was going to grow up and become the most powerful being out there, someone of such incalculable might that even Galactus was concerned about him. So why not show him grow up? Doctor Fate-His helmet was once a god. Without it he is merely powerful, but with it he is nearly invincible. Perhaps only the Spectre can challenge his magic. But, if he dons the helmet he loses himself within Nabu. What kind of person would risk their soul every day just to help other people? Too late at night to think of any others
  8. Re: "Essential" Graphic Novels / Trade Paperbacks V for Vendetta: The best Punisher story to not feature the Punisher The Essential books, especially Essential Fantastic Four and Essential Spider-Man: It's almost inexcusable for anyone interested in a Silver Age style game to not own a few of these books. Batman-The Long Halloween: One of the best Batman stories in recent memory, possibly a more definitive Batman tale than Dark Knight Returns. No, really. Green Lantern-Emerald Dawn: It's because of stories like this that fans have been begging for Hal Jordan's return for years.
  9. I was just making the point that some people are going to make the wrong choices. It doesn't necessarily make them a snarling mustache twirling archfiend, just someone who woke up with a lot of power and no idea what consequences that power brings with it. I think there's a lot of room for stories there. That and the ol' "Rampaging Robot" story. That one is always good.
  10. Well if you were a teenager and had super powers what would be the first thing you'd do with your cool new powers? Sacrifice your time to help others? Or go tear up the city? If you had the power to influence minds how long would it be before you "convinced" one of the cheerleaders to go out with you? What if one of the murderers at Columbine had been strong enough to lift a bus? Now kids aren't dumb, they know that on their own somebody might be able to take them down. But what if they had a gang of people just like them? What if an established hero came to the PCs asking them to talk to his out of control son? What if someone like Franklin Richards or Jean Grey had come from a broken home?
  11. I just hope that New Gods and Mister Miracle are mentioned in the bibliography Nobody understood the cosmic struggle between Good and Evil better than the King.

    Irish Villains

ideas! How about a sorceress (the name Aife sticks in mt head for some reason) from an island off the coast of Ireland hidden by a wall of illusions? She shows up and tries to kill a fisherman for reasons the players can't figure out. Later it will turn out that he has the ability to see through glamour (fae illusions) and may have accidentally spotted their island. After a furious battle her countrymen help her escape back across the sea. This can set the stage for a later war as the people of the invisible island decide a little proactive defense is in order. As far as a possible trickster character...it was said that meeting Adamnan was like being imprisoned forever. Another thought would be to bring in the various heroes of the Tuatha de Danaan as villains. I mean, they did conquer Ireland by force and it's not as if they /wanted/ to give it up. It might be fair to say that despite whatever positive qualities they had they didn't have a problem with conquering people and taking their stuff. That and you have to admit that making the 'shining host' the bad guys could be interesting. A group of utterly honorable warriors who excel in all the arts and just happen to want to take over the world.
  13. If you're trying for real lucha libre you've got to have grapples. Falls in Mexico are scored more often on submission moves than by pinfalls. The luchadores on American television are generally working a hybrid style, using classic lucha libre moves with American wrestling psychology. Another thought is giving the character some sort of HKA with a Psychological Limitation against it's use. In Mexico the piledriver and piledriver-like moves such as the Tombstone (called the 'Martinete' in Mexico) are banned as being far too dangerous, possibly even lethal. On a final note no masked luchadore ever reveals his identity to anyone. Doing so would basically cost him his job. In a very extreme example the luchadore Blue Demon was buried in his mask, his identity never revealed.Kayfabe (not letting fans know the truth behind the buisness) may be dead in the US but south of the border it's alive and well. Hope this helps in some way. Jushin Liger rules!
  14.
