  1. Derp. It's been SO LONG I had forgotten there was a tickbox for Active Points. I tried disabling it, and saving all the characters and some of them seemed to update. I had to manually go through a couple of characters and untick the box on each power. Thankfully they are simple builds so it didn't take long. I will try and remember to turn it off BEFORE I start making characters next time!

I figured it was in IF_DEFENSE. If I have time I might dig into that, but for right now I can just manually update the two or three characters with Flash Def. I was just hoping it was something really easy. I mean, it is kind of, but I need to push that down the priority list. Once I get all my minis printed, etc.

    Thanks for a speedy response!

  2. I'm working on my Export Template for GenCon and I am ALMOST done. I am using an RTF export because I am creating PC Profile Packets (tm). Being a Con, I am trying to make the sheets as simple as possible. I have taken out all the costs, etc. I have a couple of characters Flash Defence, but the export templates I have been browsing through to steal from don't explicitly export FD. My idea is to export "Flash Defence (Sight)" and "Flash Defence (Hearing)" on the sheet, but I cannot seem to find/figure/determine/Ouija the tags for Flash Defence.

I am rapidly at the point of diminishing returns and will just edit the final sheet, but I figured I would give a quick ask. Any assistance?

EDIT: While I am here, is it possible to suppress the Active Point cost in the Power Description by default? I can, again, edit it out of the final sheet, but anything I can do to make the process smoother would be nice.

Who are Rommy? Cimerorans? Requiem? Nictii?

In City of Heroes, Rommy and Requiem are Archvillains (kind of the biggest of the big bads).

Cimerorans are citizens of Cimerora (a region patterned after ancient Greece). Nictii or the plural or Nictus, which are beings of dark energy.

I'm very interested in hearing what you did to adapt CoH for Champions. If I recall correctly, the ITF ends in a fight with Romulus and three AV-level Nictus essences that keep him constantly healed. How did that play out at GenCon?

It went very well and rather typically. The tank taunted Rommy to keep him busy and the rest of the team blasted the every living goo out of the nictii. Once they dropped them, Rommy was pretty easy to kill. Game was scheduled to run for 6 hours and we went for 6 hours and 5 minutes. I did pare back the encounters quite a bit. There first mission only had 2 groups of cimerorans in the caverns (with 1 seer). Up top there was no ambush. Second mission was again, a single encounter with one cyst. Third mission, there was 1 general, no computers, then Rommy and Requiem. Last mission was just the platform Rommy stands on. So one group of cimerorans and then rommy/nictii.

    How did Gencon go?

It actually went crazy well. Some RL medical stuff came up and I didn't spend anywhere near as much time on the ShadowRun stuff as I would have liked. So I pretty much ran everything as stock from the ShadowPunk stuff. But that stuff was...not great. There were some pretty glaring holes and things that just did NOT work well. My AD&D conversions were awesome. The CoH ITF I could have run twice a day all weekend and still turned people away. I caught a bunch of stuff we missed in playtesting. I'm planning on making a bunch of changes and I'm continuing work on my AD&D Hero (titled Caverns and Big Lizards). I've also decided that when that is done I'll be converting ShadowRun. Once ShadowRun is done, a few people have expressed an interest in me tackling BattleTech using vehicle rules. So things went really well. I've already got notes and stuff for next year. I think next year I'll run the D series (the Drow modules) and possibly culminating in Q1 Queen of the Demonweb Pits. That's a lot of D&D conversions so I might scale that back a bit so I can squeeze in some ShadowRun playtesting.

I would also like to actually get to participate in a game or two next year! :)

  6. So my old laptop was having windows issues. So I reloaded it, got it all up to date and everything.  Installed Java (v8) fresh from Java.com. Copied my HD files over and it runs fine and everything. I went to make a change to a character and when the dialog box for the power should pop up, nothing happens. When I try and click it dings, because I'm not in the active window. The dialog box is clearly popping up someplace I can't see it. I looked through alt-tab and I can't see anything. I reinstalled java just to be safe. I don't need HD for my game today, but I need to print out character sheets for the rest of the weekend.

The dialog box for Open Character, Export Format, etc open fine. It is just the internal power dialog box that seems to be the problem. Any ideas? Here is trace log.

Back now.  New update posted that might fix the issue.

Rather than saying that all I've done is the minor little fiddly change shown above, I'll say that I've done strange and mysterious things that are not for the uninitiated (or the faint of heart).

If that does what I expect, then you'll still have the problem and I'll have to keep digging...

IT WORKS!! I've so been there before though. You change something that 20 years of experience and more coursework that you can shake a stick at tell you should make no difference, yet it does. Thanks for digging into this for me. I owe you a burger! :)

I'm all in for burgers...but the only train near me is freight only BNSF....

I'm digging through the code to see if there's any possibility of a race condition, but it appears to be too predictable an occurrence on your system for that...

Hah we at the end of the BNSF commuter. I've tried everything I can think of (even the silly stuff). So let me know if you can think of anything else to try. New version of java?

  9. It's really weird. I got not error when opening the file. I can also edit the ACV values (even actually going into the modifier window, not just adjusting from the drop down in the power window). If I remove ACV and click OK, I cannot readd it. Since ACV was already in the file I tried to add another blase and got the error/problem.

So having ACV is fine, but something about adding it to a power is throwing the error.

EDIT: LOL you wanna hop on the train and come over and look yourself? We could grill burgesr! :)

  10. I unloaded all prefabs (I usually try to open them, use them, and close them, but I think I got lazy). So I unloaded all Prefabs and problem persisted. So I closed HD and opened it up again and still have the problem.

Tried deleting appPrefs...problem persists. Could you maybe create a character with just a 1d6 blast ACV? See what happens when I try and load it?

  11. I'm building a Mental Paralysis. Add Entangle and then as my first step go to add 'Alternate Combat Value.' But when I double click it nothing happens. Select it and click Select and nothing happens. I tried on different characters with different powers. I even created a 1d6 Blast and can't get it to work on any power on any character. I even closed and restarted HD. Then I rebooted. No matter what I do, I cannot choose Alternate Combat Value on any character. This appears to be the only Modifier with a problem. I just checked and I'm using the most up-to-date version 30 May 2019. I would normally post a character but it's happening on ALL characters so I'm not sure how much help that would be. Suggestions? Do I delete HD and download a fresh version?

EDIT: Just deleted HD6.jar and emptied Recycle Bin. Downloaded new version from website. Extracted it to the location. Same problem.

The real struggle is that the Hero Mechanics are very balanced and D&D and very imbalanced so things like spellcasters vs a Fighter are hard to 1 to 1 match against the feel of D&D.

That's kind of why I'm going at it from the other side. What I'm doing is, basically, creating a Fantasy Hero campaign that has all the IP/Lore of AD&D. For instance, I looked at things like Backstab. It's a multiple or, in Hero terms, a damage increaser. So I made it part of Skullduggery (the Thief Martial Arts package) and its +4 DCs (must be behind target). I could also build it with some + HtH DCs with Must Follow Suprise (-1/2) and Only from the Back (-1/4).

Sorry if I missed it, but is there a place where we can see / buy your completed list of converted spells?

Will you be giving it a stab for D&D 5th Edition?

There is no place, yet. I'm still proofreading and such. The plan is to publish (in some fashion) a sourcebook in the near future.

I'm not sure about converting 5th Edition. I've got none of the source material and I've not played it at all.

  14. Ok, so I'm working on some of the sourcebook things because I needed a spell break.

If I were to add in some of the skills/proficiencies from further editions, which ones and from what sourcebook? I'm looking to run things pretty lean, but I figured that some of them might be worth adding (if for no other reason than to showcase Hero).

I've purchased the pack and it's good, but what would really make it awesome would be a Fantasy Hero specific character export format for Hero Designer.

I'd like something that allowed for sectional armor and tracking weight / encumberance.

HTML templates are pretty easy to do. HTML is very clear you just set up some tables and stick fields in them.

If, like me, you prefer printable templates (RTF) that is a bit messy. Even trying to tweak templates that already exist can be truly maddening.
