As I mentioned earlier in the thread, we converted our Traveller campaign to the Hero System years ago. My players have been cruising around in a Gazelle Close Escort which they have modified over the course of the campaign. Attached here for your review and enjoyment, upgraded to 6th Edition using design standards from Traveller Hero. We tried to keep the Traveller feel for ship design. Any graphics and renderings included are not my designs but rather, gleaned from the interwebs.

Lucius and LoneWolf are correct here. Since the AoE originates on the user (or more accurately, directly in front of the user), the attack isn't Ranged at all. So really, it's a choice of HKA (No STR Bonus) vs. RKA (No Range). In both cost and effect, they're identical for this purpose. Personally, I'd use the RKA (No Range).
Thanks! It took me a little while to understand the "No Range" modifier on a ranged AoE attack, until I tried to build a flamethrower (No Range, AoE Line) and a grenade launcher (AoE Explosion). That was my "Eureka!" moment.
Would there ever be a reason to use "No Range" on a ranged attack that wasn't AoE?
-
For Area-of-Effect attacks which originate on the user (e.g. flamethrower, breath weapon, etc.), should it be built as HKA (Ranged, No Strength Bonus) or RKA (No Range)? What's the difference? Thanks.

OK. HD is now letting me saved a Ranged Attack with a STR Min Limitation. It might have been an old template issue. HD Version 20171119.

Yes, please. Any of your Planetary Romance material is welcome. Love the genre. Did you ever get to "Warlord of Sard"?

Hero Designer seems to be letting me do it.
Try saving the character and then reopening it. On mine, the "STR minimum" limitation disappears from the Ranged Attack.
-
Interesting. Hero Designer does not allow adding a STR minimum on a Ranged Attack unless you include the adder "STR Min. Cannot Add/Subtract Damage". Looking in 6E2, it doesn't look like the RAW permit adding STR bonus damage to Ranged Attacks. Unless I'm missing something.
6E2 p199: "Characters can also apply STR Minimum to
Ranged weapons, such as bows, crossbows, and
guns. However, those weapons are built with Blast
or RKA, neither of which add damage from STR.
Therefore characters can never add damage to
these weapons by using extra STR..."Any other ideas? Thanks.

How would I construct a Ranged Weapon (Heroic Campaign) that allows a character to add in their STR bonus for damage? e.g. Odysseus' Bow. Use Hand-to-Hand attack with the "Ranged" modifier?

Hi Steve. The 40mm grenade launchers (e.g. M203) are built with a +1 STUNx. Several of the grenade rounds (e.g. 40mm Fragmentation) are also built with a +1 STUNx. Are these Stun Multipliers cumulative? Thanks.

Here's how I modeled a Traveller Jump-2 drive in HERO:
Jump-2 Drive - 33 Points:
Teleportation 62m, MegaRange (1m = 1 trillion km; +4) (310 Active Points); Extra Time (1 Week, -4 1/2), OIF Immobile (-1 1/2), 4 Charges (Recovers Under Limited Circumstances (Gas Giant Skimming/Water/Refined Fuel; -1 1/4), Conditional Power (Power does not work in Common Circumstances) (Non-Functional In A Gravity Well; -1/2), Requires A Skill Roll (Jumpspace Navigation; -1/2)
Fuel charges are sufficient for 4 jumps. 1 parsec = 31 trillion km, hence the Teleportation range.
The Limitation "Extra Time (1 Week, -4 1/2)" provides you with your Special Effect. The week-long Teleportation is spent in jumpspace/hyperspace/nullspace/slipstream or whatever you choose.
Blowing the Jumpspace Navigation roll results in your "random bad stuff".

There are some suggestions on how to deal with this on 6e2, p.50 in the "Surprised and Facing" section:
Thanks. Looks like the 6e RAW deals with this situation. I never noticed this in 5e and just assumed.

On your phase, using 1/2 move to get behind your opponent to attack from the rear, and on your opponent's phase, they use 1/2 move to get behind you to attack from the rear. Ad infinitum.

Hero System Skills (6th Edition) contains new Skills and Skill Enhancers.

Doc Smith's Lensman series. My players are still at a level where they don't even know an intergalactic war is going on around them.
I use AstroSynthesis for 3D star mapping. http://www.nbos.com/products/astrosynthesis
Various other authors for alien encounters. My favorite is Christopher Rowley's Vang.

As mrinku said, Penetrating and Impenetrable cancel each other out completely. As per 6E1 147 (and the errata):
"Impenetrable (+1⁄4): A Defense Power with this Advantage is particularly resistant to Penetrating attacks. An attack with Penetrating applies normally against an Impenetrable defense; the usual “minimum damage” effect is ignored. Characters can buy Impenetrable multiple times to counteract multiple purchases of Penetrating. A character’s normal PD and ED, as well as any Defense Power, can be Impenetrable. A character must buy Impenetrable with each of his Defenses separately; a character who has a Impenetrable PD doesn’t automatically get Impenetrable ED, for example. A character cannot have partially Impenetrable defenses. A given defense must be all Impenetrable, or it’s not Impenetrable at all. A character can, however, have some defenses that are Impenetrable, and others that are not."
-
I think I'm just being dense regarding the definition of "1 point of effect", so I posted this question over in the "6th Edition Rules" forum:
For the "Penetrating" advantage, there is an option in the rules (6E1 342) that states "At the GM’s option, the target may take a minimum of 1 point of effect for every Damage Class in the Penetrating power."
Does this mean that:
A. "1 point of effect" is absolute, so a 2DC Penetrating attack will do either 2 STUN minimum (for a Normal attack) or 2 BODY minimum (for a Killing Attack).
or
B. "1 point of effect" refers to Character Points, so a 2DC Penetrating attack will do either 4 STUN minimum (for a Normal attack) or 2 BODY minimum (for a Killing attack).
-
Hi Steve,

Does this mean that:

Thanks, Steve.
-
Just thinking, the optional rule makes more sense if we're talking about "Character Points" of effect (1CP for 1 BODY, 1CP for 2 STUN). Then, a 2DC Penetrating attack would do a minimum of 2 BODY or 4 STUN. It still gives more weight to the Penetrating killing attack, but it's not as unbalanced as I originally thought.
-
One other question: If a weapon is 2d6 HKA Penetrating, does the Penetrating Advantage also apply to any Strength Damage increase, or only the initial 2d6?
-
Yes. That optional rule should only apply to attacks that do not do STUN or BODY (such as Adjustment powers, Flash, or Transform).
Thanks, but 6E1 342 doesn't state that option is only for non-STUN or non-BODY attacks. Do you have another reference? I also checked the errata and there's no entry.
-
Comparing Penetrating Normal and Penetrating Killing Attacks:
A 3DC Penetrating Normal Attack (3d6), assuming all normal damage is absorbed by defenses, will do an average of 3 STUN which penetrates the defenses.
A 3DC Penetrating Killing Attack (1d6), assuming all killing damage is absorbed by defenses, will do an average of 1 BODY which penetrates the defenses.
There is an option in the rules (6E1 342) that states "At the GM’s option, the target may take a minimum of 1 point of effect for every Damage Class in the Penetrating power."
Using this option, the Penetrating Normal Attack will still do 3 STUN minimum, but the Penetrating Killing Attack will now do 3 BODY minimum.
Am I misunderstanding this optional rule?
One other question: If a weapon is 2d6 HKA Penetrating, does the Penetrating Advantage also apply to any Strength Damage increase, or only the initial 2d6?

Traveller was our sci-fi RPG of choice before I discovered the HERO System. I converted the entire campaign over to Star Hero, but kept the Third Imperium setting. The best parts of Traveller are the source material and adventures. It's the richest sci-fi universe out there. Check out the online Traveller Map. https://travellermap.com
Happy 40th Birthday, Traveller!

If I have a 5D6 Mental Blast with the Advantage "Does BODY", does that mean:
A. 5D6 STUN plus 5D6 BODY. If so, same 5D6 roll or separate 5D6 rolls?
B. 5D6 STUN. 0 BODY for each "1" rolled, 1 BODY for each "2-5", 2 BODY for each "6".
I think it's "B" based on 6E1 333, but I'm not 100%.
Thanks Steve!

I love Terracide! Did you get inspiration from "The Killing Star" by Charles R. Pellegrino and George Zebrowski?
Edit: Just read Appendix II: Reading List. It's there.
