  1. Re: Essentials Universe (Amalgam)

Sounds pretty good! Projects like this are fun...and frustrating at times trying to get the right feel. ;)

I also made one completely arbitrary decision based on personal preferences:

    1. Shalom Aleichem, Getchka: Asgardian-Olympian-Roman Pantheon based heroes are out; I've never gotten into them; they don't really jive with the overall social milieu in super-hero comics; if a character is so inconic that they can't go we'll have to make some adjustments; I can only think of one: Wonder Woman. But then, she's easy to pin down that way: a race of reclusive superhuman women who continue to believe in the ancient greek pantheon live on paradise island.

Fair enough. Could give the Amazons an origin like the Inhumans or Eternals and/or link the Amazons to the Eternals (who posed as Greek gods in the past).

    Questions

Okay, that's my initial list, but I've got some questions for Herodom Assembled:

    1. Is there anyone I left in “I can neither confirm nor deny land” you think should be considered “essential.” If so, who and why?
    2. Speedster Dude: I'm not a Wally fan, but not many speedsters have their own titles. Can I get aways with “I can neither confirm nor deny?”
    3. Underwater Dude: I'm parve on this iconic niche and have no opinion – so: Namor or Aquaman, which one and why? Can I get away with “I can neither confirm nor deny?”
    4. I'm wavering on SHIELD. What do you think?
    5. Something you've just got to get off your chest? Let me know!

1 & 2 : Do you plan on doing any Golden-Age background? Or just starting out with those on your active list? If do Golden Age, there's a place for (Alan Scott) Green Lantern and (Jay Garrick) Flash right there. Throw in Captain America and maybe the original Human Torch and you've got the core for a good JSA/Invaders type past group, and give nods to two of the other "big 5" by showcasing their predecessors.

3 : I think you could probably do fine without one. They both tend to get involved with Neptune/Poseidon a good bit too, which is a no-go here. If want to include one, I'd say go with Aquaman who has mutant powers that make him "King of the Sea" and ignore Atlantis itself. Alternatively, make Atlantis another of the hidden societies the Kree, etc. sprinkled around Earth. They're even blue! :)

4 : Don't yield - back SHIELD! I think a good-guy agent group is good to have around. Keep them limited to fighting guys like Hydra so they don't go into Newark and step on Batman's toes too much.

  2. Re: Avengers: The Next Generation on Hero Central

Curiosity question...I am seeing a wide range of OCVs and DCVs among the PCs (which is a good thing IMHO' date=' my players always tend to group near whatever cap I set). Mr. Bunneh, what would you say the benchmark CV for the game is (in the same vein that you asked characters to come in with roughly a 15 DC Attack and equivalent Defenses). Again, just curious and congratulation to whoever gets selected![/quote']

You know' date=' I've never really thought to do a comparison. Without looking, I'd guess that most heroes have around an 8 CV, with anywhere from +2 to +4 CSLs of various types. Iron Girl was on the low end, but she recently upgraded her armor (ie Spent some XPs). Arachne was on the high end with a 10 CV, but she doesn't have any CSLs, but she does have some martial arts. So... Dunno. They all seem to work well together, so I'm generally happy with 'em. :)[/quote']

    Hornet: 7/19 (shrinking) +1 level

    Banner: 8/8 +6 levels + manuevers

    Black Knight: 8/8 +2 levels

    Ms.Marvel: 8/8(10) +1 level

    Arachne: 10/10 + manuevers

    Iron Girl: 8/8 +2 levels ranged, +manuevers

  3. Re: Avengers: The Next Generation on Hero Central

Gammazon was also used for a far-future "What If?" clone of She-Hulk. Could definitely work, as could many of the other suggestions.

    I especially like:

    Gammazon

    Jade

    Knockout

Green Lynx is cool, great combo finding a green spider. Would work better IMO if she were more super-spy and less Hulk. Still, would be a good cover name for her to use sometime. :tu:

  4. Re: Avengers: The Next Generation on Hero Central

Um' date=' yeah, the whole point is to have gaps. The gaps are filled in as people make characters and write their own backstories. (snip) The story is created communally, and, if we wind up writing big chunks of it, it screws up future potential character ideas. No thanks, the openness of it all is what makes it fun.[/quote']

Now, now, remember some people really like a well thought out and planned background where all gaps are filled, I's dotted and T's crossed. It appears that Doc is one of those people.

Yup, and yup. The history is whatever the history needs to be to be the most entertaining. The bulk of Marvel stories are used as a basis to work from. Chuck what we don't like, insert what we need in order for the characters/current state of the universe to exist. Keep the rest in a 'need to know' state - when we need to know what happened to Hercules/want to introduce him into the game, we'll work it out. Until then, doesn't matter. When we do introduce him back into the world, it'll be in a way that's as consistent as possible - for example we won't say that he killed Doc Ock or just teamed up with the Vision, because those contradict other established info.

And Checkmate's certainly right - some want all the info up front. That's certainly a valid way to do it. We don't - we want to leave as many options open as possible within X framework. And that's just as valid a way of doing it.

The two styles certainly don't mesh too well together though. :D

  5. Re: Avengers: The Next Generation on Hero Central

Wow. I'm looking at the submissions thinking I must be completely out of touch with the average champions game. I feel like my "brick" isn't competitive with the non-bricks I'm seeing...

Comparisons with the existing characters might give a better guide.

I don't speak for Bill, but I'd think actual initial build is secondary to the character - if he likes the idea, background and personality, the build can be tweaked. :)

  6. Re: Avengers: The Next Generation on Hero Central

I'll get you a powered armor guy if I can play the son of Fabian Stankowics

Maybe Fabian (Mechanaut) and Gladiatrix had sparks after their failed Avengers tryouts, forming a crimefighting duo and family.

He's a mechanical prodigy with balance issues. She's a mohawk-sporting Amazon powerhouse. They fight crime.

Or a combo gym/electronics repair shop.

  7. Re: Avengers: The Next Generation on Hero Central

To answer a question I got asked in PM: Currently' date=' the status of Thor/Asgard is kinda... undetermined.[/quote']

As a side note, Journeyman (Enforcer84's character in the Thunderbolts game) has Asgardian links (as do the Wrecking Crew), but we've shied away from current state of Asgard so far. The original Asgardian's background had the realms as a post-Ragnarok wasteland, but it never really came up in play and I don't think anyone would mind terribly changing that.

Man' date=' I wish I had the time to play in one of these again. I terribly miss the T-Bolts game.[/quote']

    We miss you too!

Invader Skrull: A secret predecessor of the Super Skrull, based on the powers of the original Invaders. He possesses the 1940's versions of the powers of Captain America, the Human Torch, and the Sub-Mariner. He would be recently awoken from some sort of suspended animation (like what happended to Cap) with his memories being jumbled, making him believe he was one of the heroes who fought against the Nazis.

I like the idea. This fella may have to show up as an NPC. :D

  8. Re: Soviet Superheroes

I tend to have trouble reconciling the whole individualistic uniform' date=' code name, etc. with the whole Soviet mindset. A soviet outlaw, I have no problem with them doing the "super identity" thing, and I could see that including anti-socialist vigilantes.[/quote']

I don't have as big an issue with it. For some, works pretty well.

"Comrade X, Party Avenger!" is a symbol. Booyah for symbols! As a symbol, he's larger than life. Have a problem with him? Retire/shoot him, stick someone else in the costume. Rinse (perhaps literally), repeat.

  9. Re: Powers and Pulp

Could you be a little more specific about what you're planning? Taking existing modern Champions supers and having them transformed into more pulpy characters?

Generally my thoughts on "supers->pulp" is "dial it down a notch" and for "pulp->supers" is "dial it up a notch".

    So maybe something like:

    1) Ice guy - low body temperature, resistant to cold. Uses ice/cold based gadgets/freeze ray gun instead of inherent ice projection. More Captain Cold, less Iceman.

    2) Add more restrictions into the magic, like can only/can not target living things, incantations, etc. Powerful, but has an 'off switch' so can get captured by the natives/Nazis/cultists/gangsters and put into peril.

    3) Again, add more restrictions. Since he's sorta like Hourman, maybe include some of those restrictions - needs a focus or something to activate, and can't do twice in a row (needs an hour recharge).

    4) As noted, not a big problem.

One of the big points is that too much shouldn't be invested in their special ability. A pulp hero even without his powers/gear should be able to take on a couple of mooks.

  10. Re: Concepts You Just Can't Build on 350 points.

Rogue's only really high-powered/expensive because of her environment - the fact that there are so many powerful people for her to get powers off of. One of those things you have to buy up to whatever the highest power level is in the campaign.

If the top guns in her world were Fabian Stankowitz and Frog-Man (not Enforcer84's version) she wouldn't be too pricey.

  11. Re: A "realistic" zombie outbreak

In the First world' date=' especially urban centers I don't think things would get apocalyptic There just aren't that many exposed and unembalmed corpses. Hospitals and morgues would suffer. The question would be how people would be infected, go home, sicken and die an animate.[/quote']

I disagree about First World/urban centers.

Hospitals and morgues would indeed certainly suffer, and it would spread from there.

How many homeless are there in X city? How many might have died and not yet been found by the time of the outbreak? Source for a number of cases potentially a) near high-traffic areas and/or B) among potentially weak and likely unarmed (ie no guns) populations (other homeless).

Stories come up all the time about recluses (not Hermit) who die and aren't discovered until weeks later when neighbors complain about the smell. Bound to be some of those cases around, could quickly spread in an apartment building.

  12. Re: Order of the Stick

Of course' date=' now Belkar has simply killed someone in order to steal his stuff. He's now crosed a line... previously, we knew he was a psycho, but he never particularly did anything on-panel (and not while he was a member of the Order) to something that wasn't basically begging for it anyway. Now he's crossed the line... not sure I can laugh at him any more.

    [/quote']

What's the big deal? They need the donkey. Just throw the gnome on the cart with Roy. Once you get ahold of the cleric, he can raise them both. :D
