  2. Steve, Since Distinctive Features is supposed to be something that sets an individual apart, have you given any thought to modifiers for "generally noticeable" rather than distinctive. Here's what I mean... a white man walking in Harlem will be noticed, although no one may be able to pick him specifically from a lineup of other white men. A black man walking around the streets of Hong Kong would be noticed, but again he might not be distinctive enough to be picked out of a lineup of other black men. Are there any existing mods that I'm overlooking?

  5. Re: Traveller Character Conversions: Rules discussion My thought is just make it +1 with HTH and +1d6/+2d6 HA. Have to think about that one. I can envision it as including both Environmental Movement and a PS: Scrounging should probably be an INT-Based or PRE-Based PS. It needs wits and charm. Willpower - I agree.

  7. Re: TravellerHERO PDF in the works I'm thinking that for Jack-Of-All-Trades, we should just make this the JOAT Enhancer, and a talent JOAT that's PS: Jack-Of-All-Trades (INT-Based). Make the PS a complimentary skill to any known skills, and an automatic -5 when used to substitute for unknown skills. Complimentary has the effect of adding levels, and the Traveller text does say "This skill is a general ability which may be applied to nearly any endeavor at the discretion of the referee." That way if he's got a PS: Jack-Of-All-Trades 14-, he's got a 9- to do something he's not familiar with. Not a bad deal I think. PS Edit: And that way Extra Time and Levels can apply.

Re: TravellerHERO PDF in the works There's definitely going to be information on conversion from Traveller to HERO --- characters, ships, etc. --- plus ships, vehicles, robots, etc. written up in HERO. When I'm talking about reference vs. rewrite, here's a contrived example of what I mean. Imperial Army For a straight conversion, use the package below. For a more HERO feel, use the Basic Training package deal from Dark Champions page 38, and add PS: Vacc Suit 11-. Army Template Cost Skill 2.........WF: Small Arms 2........PS: Soldier 11- 6........Choose 6 points from the following list: Stealth, Concealment, Brawling 10.....Package Cost That's the kind of thing I mean.

Oh, and just to be sure everyone understands, where we have custom packages and gadgets, they will be included; where we mention that a package deal or weapon from Star Hero, Alien Wars, Dark Champions is appropriate, it will get a book and page reference but not be included verbatim -- just like I did with Star Trek Hero. We know people hate having to look in several books, or not having the book a package or gadget is referenced from, but we really do want people to buy HERO books and not step on intellectual property. (And we want them to buy Traveller books too, Marc).

  13. Shadowcat1313 and I have gotten the okay from Traveller's Marc Miller to put together a PDF of TravellerHERO. It'll be writeups of all things Traveller for use in HERO/Star Hero. Shadowcat1313 and I (and a few other Traveller gurus he knows) will be collaborating on this effort, and the file PDF will reside with Shadowcat1313's files on StarHeroFandom. No details on the when yet, I've just built the cover and stylesheets in InDesign, and we have to get the content written and collected. Long Live Star Hero!

  16. Re: Arcanum Hero - Victorian Fantasy I don't have Castle Falkenstein, and have only seen a few fan-site blurbs about it, so I have no idea. Someone else had asked about included the Dwarvish magical engines from CE, but again, I don't have it so probably not.

KS: Basic Education represents the basics of school learning — reading, history, math, science, literature. The character can do basic math, read, and remembers a smattering of history, geography, and literature. The rule of 5 applies: using this skill to recall a specific discipline (e.g. Classic Literature) is a -5 to the roll, so if the character has an 11- roll for Basic Education, his Classic Literature roll is a 6-. Artist’s Apprentice As a child, the character was sent off to study under some notable artist (a painter, sculptor, or similar discipline). The family hoped the character would excel and someday become a noteworthy artist. Artist’s Apprentice Cost Ability 2 PS: Accepted Artform (choose) 11- 0 Literacy in Native Language 2 KS: Basic Education 11- 2 PS: Read Body Language 11- Disadvantages 0 None Commercial Apprentice As a child, the character was apprenticed to a bank, moneylender, or other commercial concern to learn a profitable craft. The character spent most of his time with his head in the books, learning the intricacies of finance. Commercial Apprentice Cost Ability 2 PS: Banker/Moneylender (choose) 11- 0 Literacy in Native Language 2 KS: Basic Education 11- 2 PS: Accounting/Finance 11- Disadvantages 0 None Industrial Apprentice As a child, the character worked in the mills or factories, learning a trade under the watchful eye of the master engineer/craftsman. The character’s time was divided between running errands for his master, and learning the basics of the craft. Industrial Apprentice Cost Ability 2 PS: Industry (choose, e.g. miller, factory worker, ) 11- 0 Literacy in Native Language 2 KS: Basic Education 11- 3 Mechanics Disadvantages 0 None Boy Dodger The character was one of the lucky ones to survive apprenticeship in the textile factories, dodging in between the moving looms and gears to retrieve lost spools. Re: Reaching Across the 19th Century Aisle However, you have to be sure to distinguish between fan stuff (like Star Trek HERO or Western Shores HERO) and full-fledged sourcebooks (like Star HERO, Horror HERO). Fan stuff shares our love of a particular mileau. We don't want to infringe on Steve's livelihood and cause something that HERO would produce to be of lesser value because a free version was already available. So Steve, if you read this, how much could be done without infringing ? Certainly the idea (at least to me) would be new stuff, as in new professions package like Inventor, Consulting Detective, Demimondaine, Army Batman, etc.
