  1. Re: Discworld HERO

An Automaton. With lots and lots of Automaton Powers. And virtually impervious to magic -- Damage Reduction 75%, STUN and BODY, Physical and Energy, Magic Special Effects Only (-1) . . .

Oo! Oo! Extradimensional Travel and Teleport! Only To Follow Master (-2?)

The Extradimensional Travel and Teleport would be UAO as well. Assuming that's what happened to those unfortunate enough to be "eaten".

Oh, and Transform: Dirty Laundry to Clean, Folded Laundry.

  2. Re: Discworld HERO

Vimes has one thing no other character in Discworld has - the respect of Vetinari.
He also apparently has one of the most far reaching reputations on the Disc.

Rincewind - 8d6 Unluck, 3d6 Luck, Physlim: cannot learn magic, Universal Translator - Only to say "help!" or to understand Orangutan (-2), Watched: Death

He should also have a contact of some kind to represent the patronage of the Lady. I'd raise that Luck to 8d6, only in life-threatening situations, possibly linked to PS: Running. :)

Witches: Esk (possible a female wizard), Granny (Esmerelda) Weatherwax, Nanny (Gytha) Ogg, Magrat Garlick, Agnes X. Nitt, Black Aliss

Dont forget Tiffany Aching, she has three books of her own. Poor Esk is promptly forgotten.

I think Headology should actually be the equivalent of a college of magic. The magic spells should be based on presence or ego.

That would probably be a good way to treat it mechanically. I wouldn't call it magic though. Probably Super Skills.

    More thoughts:

Other races which might be playable are gnomes, gargoyles, freed golems and assorted one-shots like the elemental at the rim or a very minor god such as Bileous.

Barbarian is a highly skilled class on Discworld. At a certain point, physical and mental characteristics seem to matter very little.

Vampires and Werewolves seem to have the ability to pass their curse on through biting, but it's apparently far more common to just pass them along through family lines. Although it could be a template, it's more of a race.

  3. Re: Discworld HERO

But if a Dwarf were to somehow make a POINT about being male - which would be a harder thing to do that announcing one's femaleness' date=' but I can imagine ways it could be done - it would probably be seen as being just as "rude" and embarrassing, since the traditional Dwarf view is that this is "Too Much Information."[/quote']

I suspect a lot of what you say is a matter of interpretation, and thus as valid as any other point of view. I just happen to interpret it a bit differently.

I agree that making a point of one's gender (not necessarily sex, but sexual identity) is considered rude to dwarfs.

I also maintain however, that the only dwarf we have seen to make a point of his maleness is not shunned. This dwarf would be Casanunda, the Disc's greatest lover.

Keith "Admittedly, we have never seen him in the company of other dwarfs" Curtis

  4. Re: Discworld HERO

Umm....why? It's no more a "secret" than being male is. Male or female, for the average Dwarf, most people simply won't know what your gender is - and unless they're marriage-minded, won't care. Traditional Dwarf society simply doesn't make any distinction between one gender and the other, not even linguistically. In their greatest love story, which is also the epic of their first Low King, no one knows which of the pair was of which gender, and there's a 50% chance their first Low King was in fact female - and to the Dwarves there's nothing odd in the fact that this detail is lost to their history.

    Lucius Alexander

The palindromedary has a Y chromosome and a Y-not chromosome.

I believe they use the male pronoun solely, at least in Morporkian. My feeling has always been the assumption is that every dwarf is male. No one gets the heebie-jeebies if a dwarf announces his own male gender, but it is considered rude to announce your female gender, even if you are not wearing high-heeled, steel-toed boots or put a bit of lace on your chain mail. But I suppose you could alter the Lim to Secret: Gender. I wouldn't make it a Psych Lim, since the repercussions for revelation are social.

  5. Re: Discworld HERO

Death, the Soul Cake Duck, Old Man Trouble, et al. are probably best handled as plot devices. As for how to handle the various Guilds of Ankh-Morpork, I probably wouldn't bother with rule write-ups. Are they necessary?

Races would be interesting. Troll intelligence would definitely require a limitation. Most trolls would probably buy +10 (+15?) Int with a mandatory limitation that they could only access +2 per temperature level shift downward from the norm.

Female dwarfs would need Soc Lim: Secret - Female.

Vampires would probably be the most expensive.

The hardest to actually quantify would be witches. They rarely use magic and rarely need to. But when they do...

  6. Re: My Cool Color Hudson City Map

Steve already has his own' date=' [i']much more impressive[/i] map (see the first posts in this thread) and surely If one could be produced he can produce more. If I understand correctly his problem is finding a way to reproduce it economically enough to make it a viable product. My own map is functionally useful for my game but it lacks the artistic quality of the map that Keith Curtis produced.

Anybody who can backengineer that map (the most complex I've ever produced) from the printed segments has my vast respect. That's a monumental undertaking.

  7. Re: What Have You Watched Recently?

Just watched the Blackadder Christmas Special.

Watched A Midsummer Nights Dream (a for-kids musical production), again. (My five-year old loves it)

  8. Re: The Intangibles... (sounds like a group name, eh?)

They were included as an option in Fourth Edition Horror Hero, with very few revisions from the Almanac Rules.

They were a really cool idea, but had limited application. Or rather, they made global changes to the Hero System paradigm in order to do a limited number of effects and characters.

Keith "Used them on a couple of characters anyway" Curtis

  9. Re: THE GREEN LANTERN has fallen

Actually, Alan Scott's oath was originally, "And I shall shed my light over dark evil, for the dark things cannot stand the light, the light of the Green Lantern!"

The other one came later and is, as stated attributed to another author, not Nodell.

  10. Re: How do you know if a character name is already being used?

My six primary characters were Champion, Brother Eye, Mimic, Photon, Reflex and Moonbow. All of these are existing comic characters (maybe not Reflex, but I'd be surprised if it weren't the case.) In most cases, I had never heard of another using the name before I did. None of them is remotely like the character with whom they share their name. If it's not a major icon, I wouldn't sweat it.

Keith "OK, Mimic might be similar to other Mimics, but my approach was original" Curtis

  11. Re: Vast Underground

If they couldnt survive the "tests" set for them they died and he took their magic items and seeded the dungeon as further bait for new adventurers. If they did survive they were rewarded with some item(s) and released.

So, he turned it into Las Vegas.

Keith "Vegas has a catch-and-release program..." Curtis

One of my unfulfilled ambitions is to craft a 60 level dungeon....

I'd hate to see you wait that long. Here is a map. Just add monsters and treasure.

  13. Re: Warning Sign/Magnifying Glass vs Stop Sign

Stop: Careful' date=' this will screw your story arc if you aren't paying attention, and you are under NO obligation to allow it in game if that's the outcome you feel you'll have.[/quote']

Heh, I'm under no obligation to allow any power at all. If a character doesn't have a rationale for energy blast, I won't let him have it.

Keith "You're going to have to tell me where you got that Ice Cream Cone, Mister! From whom? Oh, never mind..." Curtis

  14. Re: Character: John Carter of Mars

The only time I can remember actually seeing him called that was at the very end of Warlord of Mars' date=' when Tars Tarkas proclaims Carter's new status: [i']"Judges," he said, "there can be but one verdict. No longer may John Carter be Prince of Helium" - he paused - "but instead let him be Jeddak of Jeddaks, Warlord of Barsoom!"[/i]

The duel with that incredible old Okaran swordsman, Solan, was what brought out the best in John Carter's own skill. He'd been very good before then, but Solan was initially much better, even against Carter's Earthly muscles. But as Carter said: "That day in the buried chamber beneath the palace of Salensus Oll I learned what swordsmanship meant, and to what heights of sword mastery I could achieve when pitted against such a wizard of the blade as Solan." Even then Carter only defeated Solan through misdirection; but that was the last time anyone was able to stand toe-to-toe against him with naked steel.

Thanks for the quotes. The bit with Salensus Oll was pretty much what I was trying to say, but more ineptly.

Keith "Jeddak, Jed, Jedarra, princess??" Curtis

  15. Re: Character: John Carter of Mars

How? I couldn't figure out how to still have access to the various levels while still keeping my plexiglass from sagging.

You are likely confusing Jetan (Martian Chess) with Tri-D Chess from Star Trek. Jetan is two dimensional and played on a grid of one hundred squares.

I built a Tri D chess board once, as well. Out of cardboard. It wasn't very pretty, and required paper chits for pieces, but it did function after a fashion, and allowed me to play by the rules I got out of some old fanzine.

Keith "despite this, I'm not particularly good at any version of chess" Curtis
