  1. Re: Bewitched

Well, sure, when you put it like that. Anything sounds complex.

    What?

To be fair, my memories are sketchy at best. I didn't remember anything more than her wiggling her nose and her relatives showing up. Your memories of it are probably much clearer than mine.

But not as clear as McCoy's.

  2. Re: Bewitched

You're showing your age' date=' Steve. ;) IIRC, they didn't do a lot of really spectacular stuff.[/quote']

Time Travel, Time Stop, Reverse Time, Summon any Specific Being from Time or Space, Global Teleport, Major Transformation, Psychic Surgery...

nah, nothing really spectacular there. :)

To really simulate the show, you would need to have a fully cosmic VPP. Slap a large number of Naked Variable Limitations on the Control cost. Each of these Limitations has a very low activation roll (Or high-- I'm not sure how Activation Roll should work on a Limitation, but it strikes me that the cost should be reversed). Any time they are going to use more than say, 40 points of effect, then run down the Variable Limitations. The resulting limitations (elaborate incantations, ingredients, hand gestures, whatever) are needed to cast that power for the duration of that scenario. Next week, you start over.

Some episodes, Time Travel was easy, other episodes, she needed to brew a potion for really minor effects.

  3. Re: Genesis of +5 = 2x power REVEALED

Umm... I guess I've missed a larger discussion, but has there really been any question of where the notion that +5 points = 2x power came from? It comes from STR, Energy Blast, and (to a lesser extent) Growth.

    ...

I guess it isn't explictly spelled out elsewhere that things like INT and PRE are also subject to the "+5 doubles it" metarule, but the metarule has been around from the beginning. :)

That was the essence of the discussion. There's a general impression that such things do carry through to INT, PRE and such, and Zornwil's previous thread was an attempt to track down where that impression came from and whether there is any validity or applicability to it. There were some interesting observations and conclusions.

  4. Re: Genesis of +5 = 2x power REVEALED

I hadn't realized it was pointed out in that thread, but figured even if it was it was 8 pages long, who would find it in there?

If by "mathematical incorrectness" you mean a 15 DEX isn't twice as likely to hit as a 10 DEX, my response would be "So what".

No, if you had read the post, you would know what I mean. An "average" person, by book definition, has 8's in the primary characteristics, making All-American 5.27x better. Mathematical curiosity.

The post was referenced several times within the thread. I merely wanted to point out that this new thread, which was referencing the old thread to "reveal" new information, was in fact, covering old ground. Not trying to rain on your parade or anything, just trying to reduce noise to signal.

  5. Re: When you hear Urban Fantasy...

I liked the War for the Oaks, by Emma Bull. That and Neverwhere are the things that I think of when I think of Urban Fantasy.

Technically, "Angel" could be considered urban fantasy, and "Buffy", suburban fantasy.

  6. Re: This is why I play Fantasy Hero

I know you're joking but you've reminded me nonetheless of one of the best paladins I ever saw played - the player was my fiancee at the time (now my wife) who didn't have a long history with role playing and the various tropes. She took one look at the description of the paladin class and played one of the most ruthless characters I've ever seen. As she explained it the guy was a holy warrior, utterly convinced of the rightness of his cause. He was definitely lawful and definitely good, but he was not a nice guy in the least. In the example you mention he wouldn't try to spread his faith to the orcs (his faith was not one that tried to convert others) and if the orcs had been raiding, thieving & killing in the area anyway then *even if they had been human* the law would probably have sentenced them to death anyway. So he'd kill them without a second thought.

  7. Re: To PLAY Or NOT To PLAY?

Von D-Man and stmichaeldet said pretty much what I was going to say. Fortunately, 95% of the GMs I have players with in the last 20 years have understood this also. The heroes should win, to make a satisfying experience. They shouldn't win easily, and victories shouldn't come without cost, but yeah. The PCs are the heroes.

For every overpowering bad guy, there should be some foils around to let the PCs shine. In fact, in later years, I have taken to playing underpowered PCs, just to make other PCs feel good about themselves. It's fun, and not so many big bads target you.

  8. Re: Valdorian Age world map (dear Mr Curtis...)

Maybe. But' date=' personally, I prefer my maps of the U.S. to have only one Indiana.[/quote']

It had to be done, in order to fill the gap left by West Central Illinois.

PS. Thanks, Phooks. If you want such a project, badger Darren or Steve about it.

  9. Re: Older Gamers, Older Characters?

These are all going to be ranges. In some cases, there was no set age/calendar, in others, the span of play covered many years.

Galen Stormcaster (Wizard) - 25 (long gap) 80's

Hollister Hamlin (Bard and Herald) - late 20's

Kurtak (Barbarian warchief) - Late 30's

Nocturna (Post-apoc. Goth chick) - 16 (I think. The campaign was a rite of passage)

Antioch Bellisarius (Fantasy Assassin) - Early 20's

    Yuuki (robot) - 150ish

Ezili LaCroix (Vapor) - early 20's

Llewelyn Harlech (Hogwarts, first year) - 11

John Kingsbridge (actor) - late 30's

It seems that where age was not dictated by the campaign (ex: Hogwarts), I have preferred 20s-30s. Younger than that and they tend to lack skills, older than that and I wonder why they are out adventuring instead of settling down.

I do seem to remember playing teenagers mostly when I actually was a teenager.

  10. Re: Order of the Stick

In the older versions of D&D a ressurection would result in the one raised being 1 level lower than they were at time of death. I haven't played D20 enough to know how the rules work now.

I believe 1st Ed. AD&D cost you one point of Con, not a level, for each resurrection. If it was a level, the number of times you could be brought back would be effectively infinite.

  11. Re: Heroes for HERO?

At first, he seemed to be very similar to the Wild Cards character, Deadhead. He doesn't seem to be doing much more than TK when we see him though. I still think Sylar is a dead end, left over from when they planned to end the miniseries after X episodes if it didn't catch on. Now that it is proving popular, they can't use their original ending.
