  1. Re: Just how realistic can you get and still have a "superhero" game?

I'd say the less exotic episodes of Batman the animated series aren't really all that different that any action cop movie' date=' the only divergence being an exotic crime fighter.[/quote']

Agreed. "Never Too Late" comes to mind. The climax of the story wasn't between Batman and a loony-- it was between an aging mob boss and a priest. And no, the priest didn't beat up the mob boss. He took the mob boss to a drug rehab center where the mob boss's son was convalescing. Pretty realistic fare.

Mob boss. I just wanted to say it one more time.

  2. Re: Damage Reduction Question

I say neither, because powers that cost 0 END by default aren't allowed in ECs. If you're going by the book, anyway.

However, if it costs END, I'd go with A too-- but instead of two Physical Damage Reduction slots, I'd only have one. Why do you have two, anyway? Was one supposed to be Energy?

  3. Re: Are Guns considered killing damage?

To "Northstar" I thought that was "Guns don't kill people ! People USING guns kill people"

I believe it was a joke specifically tailored for this audience; it used a HERO-specific term in its punchline, see.

  4. Re: X Men Colossus and his Osmium Form

IMO, the Transform/Instant Change is pretty unnecessary, and maybe even ill-advised. Why not give him DI with Visibility* (defined as his Hero ID), and then a bunch of other stuff (Armor, maybe more STR, LS) bought with OIHID? Transform/Instant Change is for changing your clothes, since changing yourself would use Shapeshift, and while my knowledge of the X-Men is rather limited, I'm pretty sure Piotr's mutation changes his body, not his duds.

*If DI is Visible by default, so much the better: it perfectly deals with his changing appearance.

  5. Re: Autofire Images

Nah. Background singers would require more points. You'd have to include the Hearing Sense and Flash Defense vs. Hearing. :)

Hearing Sense? Hardly! They're lip synching.

And I have Hearing Flash Defense built into my TV remote. Little power called "Mute."

  6. Re: Alternative Disadvantage Concept

Heh. I didn't mean to imply it wasn't original. I just meant that in some ways it has a similar feel to some WoD mechanisms.

(Your only exposure to WoD was Changeling?! Dude. You gotta play some Vampire or Mage or something. Not that Changeling isn't a good game, but...it just lacks the feel in some ways.)

That's interesting, because I would advocate running screaming from Vampire and its descendants. And run with a lot of angst. Wear black. Obfuscate yourself as you go.

    YMMV, of course.

  7. Re: Ten Commandments of Game Mastering

If it was "always appreciated" then I think more people would GM and do a lot more preparation. The fact that the players' date=' half the time, take for granted everything a GM does, and do not thank or appreciate the GM... that tends to be the case more often than not. :([/quote']

Let me amend that: "always appreciated by me."

  8. Re: Alternative Disadvantage Concept

Thanks... and it doesn't (on purpose) touch the crunchiness of Char/Skill/Power builds. In many ways' date=' I conceived of it as a direct counter-point to the crunchiness of the rest of the character. Really pushing the player to think both mechanically and thematically... not really blurring the line between them, as Disads seem to do.[/quote']

Right. The biggest complaint I hear about Disads from people who are new to HERO is that "You shouldn't be rewarded in points just for doing what you're supposed to do in the first place: make a good character." I get that point of view. At the same time, I appreciate the existing Disad mechanic, but even I frequently have varying degrees of difficulty with it, especially when I feel a character is Disadvantaged enough-- but if I want to keep up with others in the game, points-wise, I'd better come up with thirty more points of Disads.

Your proposed system skirts the Thirty More Points issue entirely by assuming that each player will want to create an interesting character for no reason other than an enjoyable play experience. I'm all for that.

  9. Re: Ten Commandments of Game Mastering

Prepare? Yes...of course. Heh. But seriously: preparation is nice and can be very helpful; I don't think it is necessary for a good game. Some of the good ones I've had a part in were improvised.

Likewise-- I used to know a guy who could improv great Cthulhu games practically on the fly. However, I know that under that veneer of effortlessness were actually years of effort and experience. He was so well-versed in CoC that he didn't have to "prepare," much like a professional brass musician reaches a point in his career where he doesn't need to "warm up" before playing. Take an experienced GM and tell him to wing a game, and he can do it. Take an inexperienced GM and tell him to do the same, and odds are it'll last about twenty painful minutes. In either case, evidence that the GM cared enough to be prepared for a gaming session is always appreciated.

  10. Re: How would you simulate this power?

Buy several combat levels with the gradual effect limitation.

    I second that emotion.

The most complex way I can think of to do this would be to have an Aid to DEX linked to an attack. However, 5-point CSLs with Gradual Effect obviates any other method, IMO.

  11. Re: New Character for review...

I'd put the Teleport and Clairsentience in an EC to save a few points; they're closely related powers, so it makes sense. Even better would be to buy Safe Blind Teleport, but if you're looking for a power that'll actually show him where he's going, keep the Clairsentience. Safe Blind Teleport will only keep him out of solid objects.

The special sub-categories for Computer Programming and Systems Operation are used more often in, say, Star HERO than in Champions, so if your GM isn't using them, that's a few more points to be saved (although Systems Operation will actually cost a point more).

Another weird Skill thing that's clearly a sign you recently purchased Hero Designer: the "+1 with single Characteristic Roll." I think what you probably wanted was a +1 with all Intellect Skills, right? In that case, it'll cost you 5 points. The 2-point SL is literally for a single Characteristic Roll. That is, if the GM says, "Make an INT Roll," which, in my experience, doesn't come up that often. That's not to say you couldn't still get that particular kind of SL; I just think you meant to get something else. Also, fool around with Hero Designer a bit more-- you'd be surprised what you can highlight and edit.

On a related note, his +2 Overall CSLs depend on an INT Roll. However, since the special effect is a battle computer doing his thinking for him, I'd remove the RSR altogether or, if you want there to be some uncertainty, change it to Activation.

IMO, you should drop the OIF Armor and up his natural Hardened Skin and give him some greater offensive ability. Up his STR and/or buy some CSLs with his MA package (or increase the damage they do).

Social Limitation: False Identity-- just to clarify, this is Secret ID, right? I only ask because there's a perk called False Identity in Dark Champions. Also, I think Secret ID is worth another five points (Frequently, Major).

Were I the GM to whom you were submitting this character, I'd also want to know how he's able to teleport, since nothing in the background mentions this. I'd also want more information on his second Contact and his DNPC, and why he takes extra damage from "chronal" attacks.

These are all pretty minor. On the whole, he's a solid character.

  12. Re: PPG Doujinshi Writeups?

Interesting webcomic. Well-drawn, anyway, and I appreciate the inclusion of Dexter. Always suspected they lived in the same universe. And I can only assume that before it was translated into English from whatever language in which it was originally written, it read much better.

  13. Re: Please explain in English about the guns

Well only have played the HERO System once and at that time didn't have any of the books so gave one of the players the details on the character and she wrote it up... This was like 2 years ago... since then I have gotten some of the books but haven't had a chance to use them till now. Mostly we play Exalted; Vampire; and Cthulhu... But we run till the DM/ST/GM gets tired and then a new one takes over... The GM this time wants to run Dark Champions... sooooo... gotta hurry and figure out the system...and since we are starting like next week don't have a whole long time to study and figure things out...

I bought the Hero Creator 2 but never used it till now so not real sure on how to do stuff with it...

Hopefully, if we keep with it... perhaps I will get it figured out...but probably just in time to start some other game system... Heck I am kicking around running TORG when its my turn again... ROFL....

    ROFL! TORG! OMGWTF!!!11!1!!

For a start, I'd suggest having some patience with yourself and with the system. You may want to read a few things on your own-- say, some of the rules, or the notes appended to the weapons tables-- to prepare. Then, I'd sit down with someone else in the group who is familiar with the basic rules of the system and either let them translate your words into numbers, or have them help you do it yourself.

If no one in your group will help you do this, they're a bunch of juvenile assholes. Tell them so. Really let them have it. If they don't accept your opinion, threaten to convince them through physical violence, then grab the GM's hair with your right hand, drop to your left knee, and, using your body weight, bring his face crashing down upon your right knee. That should at least stun him, especially coupled with the fact that he likely wasn't expecting it.

If the GM doesn't have hair, suggest to him that he grow some, as baldness is "out." Avoid him and the rest of the group while he grows hair, then proceed with the steps above.

If he was expecting it... man, that guy's Benedict. You're on your own.
