  1. Re: [Demo] Jason at the Mages Realm, Sacramento CA, Saturday Sept. 29

What game was demoed? Champions? Full size or Champs Complete? :D

Ya' date=' do know that CC has the Full rules... There should be no difference between a 6e Champions and a 6e Champions Complete game. The only thing missing from Champs Complete is the excessive examples and Starfleetitis (patching where no rule has gone before). Also I imagine some of the extra bits from the Champions genre book is gone too.[/quote']

It was an Intro to the Hero System game designed to bring in system elements one at a time. Jason talked about CC, but no samples from the actual product.

  2. Re: [Demo] Jason at the Mages Realm, Sacramento CA, Saturday Sept. 29

Game went very well, with Jason giving a great mix of just enough suspense and uncertainty, a bit of oddness, and some obscure mythological/historical stuff. The group was relaxed and fun while keeping a focus on the game most of the time.

The quote of the evening was Jason's description of the villains as "The creme de la crap."

Had to leave a little early (game started a bit late and had to drive back to Bay Area.), so don't know how it ended.

  3. Re: New Product: Crystalline Counters [accessory]

They ARE in fact pretty cool. But I can only upload the pictures I've got.

Still, it's not to hard to figure out what they look like from the low-res pictures.

    Hey Guys,

Here's a link to a higher-res image from the 3 Sages Web Site

The only photoshop work I did was merging the image of the tube onto the background shot.

  4. Re: superuseless superpowers

Teleportation, always on, persistant, 0 end, only to fixed locations, one fixed location (bedroom in bed under blankets).

    Hmm... How about...

    Buckaroo Bonzai Power...

Wherever you go, there you are: Teleportation, always on, persistent, 0 end, must pass through intervening space, only to one fixed location (location is inside clothes currently worn), power limitation (if not wearing clothes, total power loss)

  5. Re: Disads for Dana Scully

    Hmm...

Hunted: The Lone Gunmen, More Powerful, 11-, Watched = 10 Points

I put them as More Powerful; while they don't have the FBI resources to call upon, they are fairly powerful individuals in that universe and they have an almost unlimited freedom of movement and action.

p.s. The first batch of non-superhero characters I ever wrote for the Hero System were Mulder, Scully, Colombo, Monk, and the then-sidekick of Monk (Sharona) :)

  6. Re: Has anybody played "Spirit of the Century"

FATE and Fudge are specifically rules-light systems. In that aspect, they are on the opposite side of the spectrum from Hero and will deliver a different feel of play when "Bang! Bang! I shot first, Billy! No, I shot first Bobby!" components (ie. mechanics) are activated. I play both Hero and Fudge because sometimes I want a crunchy-munchy candy bar, sometimes I want silky-smooth ice cream :)

Read most of Spirit a few months back, but haven't had a chance to play it yet so can't say how FATE works in an actual game as opposed to older more-or-less-standardized "Five Point Fudge"

From the read, I really like the way in which character generation is a collaborative effort between all of the players. Also of note is the optional "wait to set your skill slot until you do it (and then backstory it :) )" which is definitely the feel I personally get from watching the occasional old film serial of the 30's and 40's.

  7. Re: Gestalt is Online

I've returned from GC (and dog tired)

I'm glad people have liked the book. More than glad, actually. As I mentioned earlier, the price issue is a personal thing and should be respected.

I think you miss out on a lot of life's charms when you make the dollar sign your sole benchmark… however, necessities are necessities and no book is worth a diet of ramen noodles or mac and cheese ;). At Gen Con, I picked up "Steal Away Jordan", a Forge game where you play a slave in the 18th and 19th Century. It's 48 pages and digest sized with archived B&W photo art. I paid $20. I don't feel ripped off; it's a unique concept, charmingly presented. I'm really happy to have it, but I could understand why a lot of people would pass on it. My $20 value isn't everyone else's, and that's okay.

    Hey Scott!

Glad to hear the train trip went smoothly (My flights went smoothly, but as always some folk ended up playing "where was my connector changed to?" roulette at the airport.)

GenCon was a great show and I've got some freelance work that's taking up most of my time at the moment. I've managed to give a few small chunks of Gestalt a full read... WOW.. there is a ton of some really amazing stuff in there.

Steal Away Jordan was also my IPR purchase at the show. I find the historical perspective amazing and really hits home to someone used to 'standard' roleplaying situations. How many games do you roleplay a character that starts out with the "+5 vorpal sword" constantly about to come down on his neck? As you said, it isn't everyone's cup of tea, but that's one of the greatest things about this industry and human beings in general.

Also picked up a couple of DOJ books, but you probably guessed that :D

  8. Re: Faerie's Tale

That's pretty cool. My lovely bunny-wife wants to run it at the kids-con part of the local convention next February.

I was part of the Firefly Games booth crew this year at GenCon :)

Any Advice for Running FT at Conventions & Similar Venue

A lot of people were talking about running games at conventions (particularly in YP rooms) and after-school programs. Thought I'd start a thread on that board for folk to share GMing advice with each other.

  9. Re: Hero vs D20 Future

If you are looking for an inexpensive pre-built scenario geared toward new players, I will mention Rescue at Karadonna :)

    https://www.herogames.com/viewItem.htm?itemID=203076

You can get away with just the rules book if you use it as a one-shot, and it is specifically designed as "newbie-friendly." It has a dozen pre-generated characters including base OCV noted next to various weapons. Everything has the same SPD, so the players aren't swamped with learning everything at once (Ie. They learn the ever-important How to Hit and Kill Things during their first game. Then they're ready to move on to other stuff. :D )

The one thing I would change is to put the module in 2326 instead of the 2365. This puts your characters in prime shape for some great political fireworks if you go with Alien Wars.

  10. Re: 5th Edition Champions Art you liked!

    In Teen Champions

I thought a lot of the images really hit the mark with the genre. My 3 favorites at a quick glance:

The expressions of all the characters when the very young-looking Motor City Defenders try to get into the Palamino Club using fake IDs (p 38.)

There's a lot of really nice subtlety to the images of the Head Gardner on page 50.

Where did Hugo get the section of pipe? And is the liquid he's standing in flammable? (Pg 56.)

  11. Re: Longest Running Thread EVER

If you ever get the opportunity to check out Muir Woods here in the Bay Area I highly recommend it.

That's the one spot in the Bay Area that we've taken every visitor.

We're thinking about getting a yearly pass (it's pretty cheap and well-worth it).

If you ever have a few vacation days at the end of the year you need to use up and the weather is nice, I whole heartedly advise going there on a weekday during the Christmas shopping season. :D

We went in December on a slow Monday with my visiting Sister-In-Law and her family. They were all busy taking pictures of the kid, so I walked ahead of them to Cathedral Grove. It was around 4:30 (the sun is at a cool angle then at that time of the year, and you get a lot of "light columns" because of the slight fog) and I was the only person in all of Cathedral Grove for about 15 minutes and it was very quiet except for a few small animals. Surreal. :)
