  1. Re: Library Cataloging System for a Multidimensional Library

I would circumvent the entire notion of a cataloging system because the shear magnitude of changes would be too much for anything but a hyper intelligence or celestial being to keep up with.

What if a user could just direct a question to some "thing" that that thing would respond with pertinent questions of refinement.

"Are you interested in the unpublished works of Xenophon from the first second or third earth dimensional sub group?

Maybe it's a computer, maybe it's a spirit being that embodies books and uses magic to find what you want.

Also, that sounds like an interesting potential campaign.

  2. Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group...

    Rolemaster campaign:

Upon entering a room in an ancient ruins the party encounters a statue of a very large humanoid. One of the characters approaches the statue at which point it swings at him. Thankfully the statue misses and everyone backs away. A few minutes later a few more party members arrive and the following conversation ensues.

Mage: Hey whatever you do. Don't get close to that statue!

Arriving character: You mean like this? (He walks up to the statue)

The statue swings mightily connecting with the party member. The critical results in the characters heart being destroyed by the concussion of the blow. Instant death.

    Mage: Yeah, just like that!

    Rolemaster is a harsh mistress.

  3. Re: What Have You Watched Recently?

I've been streaming Farscape on Netflix. Finished Seasons 1-3, waiting for 4.

The first season was a little weak, but after that they got better writers and played down some of the stupid weaknesses the alien races were given in the first season. Honestly an alien species who, when they get cut, has to have someone around to make them bleed MORE or they die is not going to make it as a warrior race. Also there's an entire species you can defeat just by turning the heat up, and they are the other 'warrior' aliens. :)

  4. Re: Map Tiles

You know, in the past I've found some Harn-related sites that have very detailed maps and senarios for things like inns. I don't have the bookmarks any more but you might try a search for Harn materials.

  5. Re: Easiest way to... emulate 5th negative skill levels in 6th

it has nothing to do with logic or power abuse. It has to do with Steve Long made a decision and everyone thought it was a bad one' date=' but he's going to defend it come hell or high water... I think.[/quote']

It's just the name of the power that makes people feel like it should create light but Change Environment is only for creating Negative Combat Effects. Light is not a Negative Combat Effect.

If I recall correctly Images has been used for creating light since before 5th edition and Steve Long.

If Steve's replies to questions about using Change Environment for light are sometimes terse it may be because such posts are sometimes unintentionally rude; questioning both his intelligence and his motivations.

  6. Re: What is the best thing to Drain to incapacitate?

I can't recall of hand and only have my copy of 6e handy. If you drain Int to 0, doesn't EGO necessarily fall to 0? Vice versa as well. Or is that perhaps me confusing more than one game system? Why is this important? Int is cheaper in 5e to drain than Ego. The concern is that at 0 int, a target might be able to do things, just irrationally. I think the fact that they have 0 EGO as well causes them to loose all will and motivation, thus becoming actionless.

    La Rose.

INT and EGO don't have any connection if one is drained to 0.

At INT 0 you can't take any new actions, you just keep doing what you were doing before. At EGO 0 you will do what ever anyone tells you to do.

0 INT and EGO is total GM territory.

Maybe you can order the target around but they have to make an INT roll to understand you command.

  7. Re: Easiest way to... emulate 5th negative skill levels in 6th

'still'? CE is hopelessly broad and disorganised, ill defined and, by turns, too expensive for what it does, and too cheap for what it does.

    Some people might like that....

That's a bit of an overstatement in my opinion, but even hopelessly broad is better then paying points for a power that does absolutely nothing like CE did pre-5th ED.

  8. Re: Easiest way to... emulate 5th negative skill levels in 6th

I never used them but wasn't the old Negative Skill level -1 to any one thing at a time?

I never used them either, but, I just looked. Yes, they could only affect one skill at a time and it would take the caster a half action to change the allocation, which makes it pretty easy for the target to just not use that skill until it the caster shifts it to something else.

  9. Re: Easiest way to... emulate 5th negative skill levels in 6th

27 points per -1 to affect all characteristic and skill rolls, and OCV at the same time. Also, the first phase they are cursed the target would have to make a Characteristic roll of each type or suffer some kind of negative effect, such as falling down if they failed the DEX check.

    I think it's a very fair price.

However, Change Environment is open to any combat effect the GM is willing to allow, so heck, the GM could say you can have the equivalent of a -1 Negative Skill Level for 10 points.

  10. Re: Need all of your suggestions for this power build

Sure, buy an END Reserve and you can put a limitation on the REC of that reserve to represent the conditions by which it recovers, in this case it requires energy sources near by.

If you want the absorption to have a game effect buy a Persistent Change Environment to represent the fact that heat and light and electricity tend to disappear when you're character is around.

    and/or a Persistent Drain field.

  11. Re: Slashing Advantage for Weapons - Variation on Alternate Armor Piercing (H6e-APG.1

Yes' date=' good idea, I quite agree; those are already some other parts of the system -- each type of protection is a -2 Limitation (= 1/3 cost) -- that's the Armor side of the equation -- e.g., Heavy Chainmail is 8rPD vs. Cutting/Chopping/Edged attacks, 6 rPD vs. Puncturing/Sharp/Pointed Attacks, and 4rPD vs Blunt/Bludgeoning/Smashing attacks.

This thread is looking at 1/3 of the weapon side of the equation -- the Slashing ability of edged weapons: Some particular weapons of the general types have different advantages of varying levels:

    • no Advantage,
    • +1/4 Advantage or +1 DC or +1 OCV,
    • +1/2 Advantage.

The Weapons are balanced in terms of Active Points but get different specific abilities. Blunt Weapons get +0, +1, or +2 Increased STUNx; Puncturing Weapons get +0, +1/4, or +1/2 Armor Piercing; Cutting Weapons get +0, +1/4, or +1/2 "Slashing". (Penetrating is used for Magic). Yes, many weapons do get multi-powers for different modes of attack.

That's the larger context of where I'm going but exactly what the game effects of this "Slashing Advantage" are what I'm looking for feedback on here.

Huh...What? Hey! Sorry, the monkey I hire to do my posts doesn't always read carefully before posting. Bad monkey.

  12. Re: Slashing Advantage for Weapons - Variation on Alternate Armor Piercing (H6e-APG.1

    OK, to make this simpler:

    All weapons get an Advantage:

    • Bashing = Increased STUNx

    • Puncturing = Armor Piercing

    • Slashing = ?

Hero System has rules for what pointed and blunt weapons do, but the 3rd what would a comparable Advantage be at the at +¼ or +½ level for edged cutting weapons?

Are you guys not differentiating weapons, or using the straight up non-Advantage Fantasy Hero Slashing method, or just doing it in some other way?

I don't think there would be a advantage for slashing. Maybe a +1 OCV.
