  1. Re: Worst comic book superfight ever

Callisto suffers from the traditional Claremont writing consistency. However, it might be interesting to postulate that her fighting skills are in inverse proportion to her looks. Regular Callisto looked like she was 'rode hard and put away wet' and was a skilled streetfighter. She underestimated Storm in their duel and got shanked for it, though.

Later, she got a makeover by Masque and became drop dead supermodel gorgeous. At this point she mysteriously couldn't fight her way out of a paper bag and had to be saved from street punks by the then-amnesiac Colossus who (having also forgotten his powers) whaled on them with a baseball bat or some such. She also had her eye restored by Masque in the process.

Later, after Claremont's return to the world of X, she turns up having gotten her arms replaced by tentacles again courtesy of Masque. At this point, she is now apparently death on two legs and can force Juggernaught to job to her. Why she has chosen to not have her eye restored again is beyond me.

Of couse, you can make all sorts of assumptiona about the character, such as her odd fondness for Professor Xavier. She has repeatedly gone out of her way to assist him, such as saving his life when he was beaten for being a mutie back in like Uncanny #192-193. Then there is her more recent assistance in Genosha in the third Excaliber series. Maybe she digs bald guys or something. Who can say, really.

  2. Re: Worst comic book superfight ever

I don't know, since my Spidey History is flaky, but I notice Spider-Man is wearing a black costume during his fight with Firelord.

    Is that the symbiote?

No. The symbiote was removed in #258. For a time afterwards, Spidey wore a normal fabric version of his black outfit before once again returning to his standard gear.

  3. Re: What does a SuperTeam need?

He knows the lyrics to the song that asks the question' date=' "Am I blue?" ?[/quote']

Eiffel 65 is a fine band. A fine band, I tell you. And, yeah, I do know the lyrics. I also know the lyrics to "Can Blue Men Sing The Whites?" by the Bonzo Dog Band.

Anyway, I'm gonna make Champsguy or Stray Cat be leader. That'll learn 'em. I'm just gonna make suggestions, probably in hindsight. That's always fun.

  4. Re: Professor X vs Hector Hammond

Actually SuperSkrull' date=' I don't think the Z'nox chamber was needed to forge the link itself. That was all Professor X. The Z'nox chamber was needed so the Z'nox couldn't suss out what he was doing and interfere. At least, that's my best understanding of the situation.[/quote']

Ah, I see... Huh? you mean Professor Xavier's telepathy can punch through shielding like that? My god, nobody's safe from him!

  5. Re: 50's comic-book heroes

I am wrong about Captain Atom. He debuted March, 60. Missed it by three months.

    CES

Hmm, does anyone here know if this is based on the actual month he appeared or is this a case of going by the cover date? They used to be like 3 months ahead of the actual month they appeared in to allow longer life on the comic racks.

  6. Re: Just Picked Up Champions Worldwide

Me too. Hmm.. Brick Heroines... only a few Empyrean Quasi Bricks that I can think of' date=' oh, Charm Girl. she had a 65 Str and was basically a superman style brick girl.[/quote']

What about Teen Dream from Teen Champions? She's a respectable Str 60 with a handful of brick tricks.

  7. Re: Favorite Marvel 'What If?'

What if... I liked too many of them to choose. Lets go with just a few.

Dr Strange was the disciple of Dormammu

    Baron Mordo became Sorcerer Supreme

    Spider-man joined the Fantastic Four

    Korvac killed the Avengers

Daredevil was the disciple of Dr Strange

    The whole Time-quake 5 parter

    Namor joined the FF

#105 -Introducing Spider-Girl, I really liked the M2 line for some reason

#125 -what if the heroes never returned from the Secret Wars

'cause those kids were pretty cool characters, esp. how Cap's daughter can lift Thor's hammer while his own son can't.

  8. Re: Worst comic book superfight ever

I'm gonna weigh in with Uncanny X-men #213, where Sabretooth grabs rogue by the back of the head and smashes her face first through a big ol' boulder. I remember being angry with that one back as a teenager and it tastes just as rancid now as it did fresh off the shelf. I just refuse to beileve Sabretooth is strong enough to do that and still loses to Wolverine. After all, he could just swat the runt with an SUV or some such if he can pull stunts like that.

  9. Re: Professor X vs Hector Hammond

The Z'nox chanber' date=' the "most telepathically shielded room on Earth."[/quote']

Y'know, that whole concept hurts my head. How is it a room that blocks telepathy was used in forging a mindlink with anyone? Regardless, the description and the feat both stand. Maybe there's some subtle use for it I don't get offhand. It's been over two decades since I read about the Z'nox chamber. The details do get fuzzy over time.

...I especially don't want to think of how detaching part of the Z'nox Chamber and magnetically floating it overhead would shield you from Rogue's powers. Nevertheless, that's what Joseph, the Magneto clone guy did. There may have also been a magnetically levitated horse & carriage ride in that issue but that's grist for an entirely different mill.

  10. Re: Magnetism: Abuse And Super Metals

I seem to remember this being a nifty trick but now that I think about it' date=' it really shouldn't work (yes I know, pretty much anything could work in the comics :)). Magneto's powers are probably greater even than the strength of Hercules, but the 'metal' in the cloak still wouldn't have resisted Herc's strength. Essentially Magneto's control versus Herc's strength should shred the cape. The metal in the cape would have to have been adamantium or some other metal that Herc couldn't break.[/quote']

If for no other reason than since he is also an Avenger, Iron Man's armor was, for the longest time a metallic steel mesh hardened beyond belief by a magnetic field. Considering this is the same world-frame, it's obviously the same principle of 'science' at work here.

Fortunately, Magneto's costume, unlike the rest of his abilities has almost always been made of steel mesh. Lets him do those stylish tricks like emag levitate and form his costume around himself from across the room.

  11. Re: Professor X vs Hector Hammond

Once again, it comes down to who does the writer/editor want to win?

But I'd have to give the edge to Charles, he's had the powers longer.

True, Marvel telepaths have a lot more skill in mental combat, as there's considerably more of them to butt "heads" with. Cabeza-a-cabeza combat, if you will. (admittedly, my Spanish is way rusty)

  12. Re: Professor X vs Hector Hammond

Y'know, I really wanna weigh in on this one but despite knbowing what Hammond's powers are, I find I can't be certain he actually has any of them.

For example, he's supposed to have a degree of indestructibility gained when he upped his power level at the cost of his mobility. Does he still have it? He's telekinetic, telepathic and able to manipulate minds but does he always have his TK or is it as off and on as the Martian Manhunter's Martian Vision.

After all, his astral form was once whupped by Dr Martin Stein in astral combat in the JLA comic but Stein is no psionic powerhouse. Dr. Stein is, just in case you guys don't know, a former part of the Ronnie Raymond-era Firestorm. He played 'floating head who nags and gives tech support' for the high school student with nuclear powers. He's currently the Fire Elemental of Earth and has just reappeared in Infinite Crisis #3 where he's been in deep space exploring.

Since Hammond's appeared so seldom compared to Professor X, he's got far less consistency in his displays of power.

I do think he's still a potent telepath with a range that's at least interplanetary but anything else may be up for grabs, power-wise.

  13. Re: Yuletide travel powers

Santa lives in another dimension where time passes much more slowly' date=' which is how he can live so long but he had tachyon elves (which move at speeds inversely proportional to the local speed of light) to get all the toys ready.[/quote']

OK, that's just a wonderfully weird image.
